This movie wasn't terrible, and I like it when I was a kid seeing it on AXN.
why did it fail?
be129b No.16541551
Because EVERYBODY that was interested in it only wanted a movie adaptation of FFVII (which was the obvious and smart thing to do). When they realised it had absolutely nothing to do with FFVII aside from the FF brand they stopped giving a fuck immediately and the movie flopped fucking HARD. Then Square became Enixes bitch as punishment for their extreme stupidity.
Why the fuck would you dump all your companies money into a risk like this when the safe and obvious option would have easily made you hundreds of millions of dollars?

I quite liked it as the sci-fi apocalyptic film it was, and all the friends I showed it to said it was decent at worst. Most expected a by-the-numbers Advent Children type flick, but at the end of the day SW was better than that tripe.

> This movie wasn't terrible
If that's all you can say for it, then right from the start, you're condemning it with mediocrity.
It wasn't a fun movie for parents to take their kids to like a Pixar film, nor did it push any boundaries of cinema to try and draw in an adult crowd. It didn't draw on its Final Fantasy brand in a meaningful way to appeal to existing fans like Advent Children would later, yet the future of Square's film division depended upon it being a huge hit. I agree that it's an interesting film, but it had no audience.

It has nothing to do with FF in any fucking way, any FF that came out during that time, and I was really confused myself because of it, which prevented me from enjoying it.
In the end, Advent Children was made a few years after anyway.

I was expecting elements of the games, creatures, weapons, etc., in my case I was actually more on the FF8 wagon but still knew about the earlier ones and not even a damn chocobo, if anything I expected an original story because the games weren't exactly connected from the beginning but shared a lot of elements like magic, creatures and sometimes names.
The writing was just pretentious "2derp4u" stuff.

sadly this movie could have stood on it's own as it's own shit. or even loosely based on the deadspace franchise, but hollywood doesnt trust the audience to take in an unknown film without brand recognition, so they fuck us and themselves with their inability to take a risk.

I was a huge FF fan back when that movie was released. You have to remember that for the most part FF was still a Fantasy game with very mild science fiction and ostentatious battles. Where as the movie was Science fiction with mild fantasy and not very much action. IIRC people thought the movie was good but they where all dumbfounded because it wasn't what anyone associated with the brand. The move marked a shift in Squaresoft's priories. I was also around this time I started to hate final fantasy in general.

It almost killed Square, so it couldn't be all bad. Shame it had to come along at a time when Square was still potentially redeemable rather than today where it would have brained them with the shovel and threw them in the grave. Then again, their doom was pretty much sealed when Final Fantasy 7 blew up in popularity and everybody was buying their games just because they had "jaw dropping" FMVs - so TSW was the logical end-road conclusion of that. Once they tried to sell it to people who just wanted to watch a decent movie instead of shitting on each other in the console wars over hardware power - their magic evaporated and it lost it's appeal.
I still watch it occasionally, not because it's a good movie (it's mediocre - so still better than 90% of the Hollywood trash that comes out these days), but because it's steeped in early 2000's anime aesthetic and a nice little nostalgia trip.

FF lore and universe is trash. Trashiest trash that ever filled a garbage can.
The smartest thing the people making this movie did was to make something new.

not necessarily worse but would've probably bombed even harder. that was fucking 2001, long before the whole "nerdshit selling simply for being nerdshit". they had to make a "western" movie broad enough to attract people that didn't play FF or even know what it is. and even then it's still a gamble, there are shit movies making bank and good movies flopping, just like every other entertainment medium.

from what I remember the real shame was that a big part of the money went into the tech, not actually making a movie. another movie based on the same tech would've probably been much cheaper to the point they could've at least made their money back over time

It's a shit movie, and you have shit taste. You only like for the visuals.
>why did it fail?
Because it was a bloated over written pile of sci-fi nonsense that appealed to no one. The movie is way too talky for normalfags and way too sci-fi heavy to appeal to FF fags. Square basically made the video game equivalent to Heaven's Gate; it's a big expensive movie that appealed to almost no one while nearly bankrupting themselves in the process, so much so that Enix held off on the eventual merger after seeing what a flop it was.
