shmups mainly because of touhou but there is quite a lot of musical talent that work on those games for some reason

It doesnt matter what genre the game is, it can have any type of music and it depends more on what theme or setting the game uses rather than the genre itself like a horror game using suspensefull, orchestral music, a dystopian game using electronic music, game set in the USA using burger music, etc.
However fast paced action games like shmups or FPS usually have the best soundtracks

Games that have a focus on music, but do not break the flow of its background music for any reason, are the best choice. This is more of a game-by-game basis because most games like to ==rudely== interrupt the music when you lose a life or start a new level.

I'm not sure of the correct terminology on this one, but it's a system that flows one way, but not necessarily back the other way. A soundtrack is independent of the gameplay, you can separate it and listen to it whenever you want, while gameplay indeed can be influenced, positively or negatively, by the quality of the soundtrack.
e57155 No.16552084
>>16552060
I disagree with that. One's appreciation for the music can be immensly improved by experiencing it during the game. Pretty much any shmup music is far better enjoyed when you've played the games yourself. That's how I came to really love Nier and MGR's soundtracks in particular. Touhou as well after I started the games too besides just listening to the music standalone.
881621 No.16552102
>>16552084

One way to think about it is if you would consider the music to be good outside of its context. For example, if the soundtracks to games like MGR, Bayonetta or Nier were released before the game, would you have thought the same way about the music? Would the soundtracks be as highly regarded as they are?
ea4a9f No.16552119

I get the point you're trying to make here, but usually the best game music was written and performed with the game in mind. If you take away the game, then you're taking away an intended part of the musical experience.

Appreciation, sure, but isn't appreciation more a personal reflection rather than a statement on the quality of something?
>>16552102
To go on your point, I'll take MGR as an example, since I've never actually played through it. Rules of Nature and It Has To Be This Way are incredible. There are other songs on the OST that I can take or leave sure, but those two for sure are excellent songs entirely on their own.

Please excuse my tired, drunk, and sleep deprived rambling.
Man, that's a good question. Besides the visability boost from being attached to a video game, I do think lots OSTs get a boost in their perceived quality/state. Because video games can better build people's connections to OSTs through additional means beside the music itself like characters/story/gameplay/timing/etc. How many times have you seen posts like
>i really like X's theme because of X
or
>i like Y because their theme was kickass
or anons gushing about a particular piece(s) because of extra dynamic sound designs? MGR was fantastic with it's
RULES OF NATURE
right after blocking the metal gear ray's blade. That one perfect moment probably sealed the deal for so many people right then and there. And its lyrics kicking in for every boss's later phases. Every thread that's something along the lines of
>little things you love/details that make a good game great/tropes you love/etc
will always have someone talk about an OSTs quality because it's inherently tied to a video game. Stuff like a boss's theme morphing to the main/overworld's theme, re-occuring leitmotifs, lyrics kicking in certain battle phases, characters joining together for a large singalong, night/day/winning/losing/mood variations to a particular song and so on.
So yes, even if they're removed from their games, an OST can still stand on its own qualities, but there's such an immense and inherent boost to how they're made, judged, and enjoyed caused by all the extra aspects from the interactivity of video games. I don't think there's any soundtrack that is considered good only because it's attached to a video game, but near all sountracks do get a boost because they're attached to a video game. Or said much more succinctly >>16552119 . I still would have enjoyed MGR, Bayonetta, and Nier's soundtracks without playing the games, but I enjoy them even more so since I have.
>>16552144
If you enoyed Rules of Nature already, then I can only imagine how much more you would enjoy it once you listen to it during its boss fight and experience how it and the rest of the vocal tracks are sync'd with the boss fights. The game also pulled a nice dynamic effect with The Only Thing I know For Real, Sam's fight, by temporailly stopping the song's lyrics whenever you manage to knock his sword away and re-introduces them once he gets it back. Nier also pulled a fantastic job with how it used and introduced its songs. My particular favorites being Kaine Salvation/Escape, Emil Sacrifice/Karma, and Shadowlord. The way it used the Twin's themes throughout the game was amazing too. Hollow Dreams and how it was introduced in game will forever be maximum fucking comfy. I can definiately say there's no way I would have loved the song as much if I didn't experience it blind myself firsthand in-game instead of listening to it externally on youtube or in a music thread here. I would attempt to describe Bayonetta's soundtrack too, but I'm rapidly loosing my ability to type and proofread.

Don't forget genres like rhythm games which are built around their soundtracks and games that are pretty much defined by a genre of music like Initial D and JSR. Sure, they can be great games and the soundtracks do support the gameplay to the point where the soundtrack is integral to the gameplay mechanics but does that necessarily make the music good?
If you wish to judge by the functionality of the music in the game then rhythm games would have to have the best music in all vidya. If the only criteria to go by is what sounds good, then go ham since there's nothing else quite like Eurobeat and racing games.

I'd argue that rhythm games have the best soundtracks, if you count them. Music is the main focus and so they usually have a good selection of good shit. Those are the games where I'll consistently listen to the music outside of the games because it's just so good. Other than that, I think shmups tend to have good music from what I've played, which isn't much. JRPGs are often pretty good too, with Ys standing out as usually having really good music. Other than music games that is the series I'll listen to the music from most often.
