7c4740  No.16530495

It's been a little over one year since Rare's pirate MMO initially launched (March 20th 2018). When Sea of Thieves first released, it was rightfully criticized for its lack of content and mediocre structure of grinding for vanity items. There were three trading companies at launch: The Gold Hoarders, The Order of Souls, and The Merchant Alliance. Gold Hoarders would give quests with "X marks the spot" treasure maps or riddles with hints regarding where a chest of buried treasure could be found. The Order of Souls had a little bounty system tasking players to find and kill an NPC skeleton on the map, then turn in that skeleton's skull after it was defeated. Merchant Alliance would have players ferry cargo (like animals) to an NPC or outpost on the map within a specific time frame. Upon turning in any of these items to any faction, you would earn gold which could be spent on cosmetic items for your character or ship, and that was basically it. You could also spend money to level up in each faction if you desired to unlock longer, more challenging quests.

Items were designed to keep all players on even footing so no one would have advantage over the another. Swords, guns, compasses, buckets, shovels, etc all have equal value in their respective category. You can't purchase a "better" shovel which would allow you to dig faster compared to other players, for example. Everyone is on even footing, but I could understand why many feel disappointment when you can only spend money on cosmetics just to have different looking equipment. When the game first released, there was a lack of guidance or tutorials for players to understand what they needed to do to navigate the world. If you took the time to play with randoms, you could easily find an incompetent crew that had no clue how to play, which led to many players quitting and never picking the game back up again.

When you look at the achievements for Sea of Thieves, the most commonly unlocked ones are as follows:

Legends - "Cronch" (You ate a banana, skin and all) - unlocked by 71.32% of gamers

Now Bring Me That Horizon (You set sail for the first time) - unlocked by 67.48% of gamers

Handbrake Turn (You changed course by dropping anchor while the ship's wheel was at full lock) - unlocked by 59.41% of gamers

I Wanna Be A Pirate! (Your reputation within a trading company increased for the first time) - unlocked by 52.69% of gamers

So how do you get players to come back to your game? You provide more updates and additional content to keep the game going for a while longer. Let's see what significant content has been added to Sea of Thieves since launch…

Now what do you think would continue to get people to come back to Sea of Thieves? More Tall Tale story quests? Changes to combat? What would you like to see?

There's some Sea of Thieves tabletop RPG set to come out around October 2019…

https://www.mongoosepublishing.com/rpgs/sea-of-thieves.html

but since the Anniversary Update it seems like Rare has gone quiet a little bit. And I don't think people who play the videogame would necessarily want to dive into a tabletop RPG. I hope they announce new updates for Sea of Thieves come this E3, as they announced the Cursed Sails and Forsaken Shores updates at E3 last year.

The biggest problem is the lack of progression and hoarding. Anything you can achieve is worthless, you can't buy bigger ships, you can't buy more cannons, better guns/gunpowder, bigger crew and so on. You can't put all your loot in one big pile that looks cool and is actually worth something.

Why should I bother transporting goods or attacking other players? I can't even gain anything of value from them, and similarly, they lose nothing. Enemies losing something is the most fun part for me.

I believe the only fun thing I've heard about this game is camping the harbor to sink players that were about to turn in their boring delivery quest.

I made one of the worst mistakes of my gaming career by purchasing this shitpile.

I was kind of depressed and sick of being a cynical asshole, and I wanted to have that childhood experience of just getting a game that looked interesting without digging deep into reviews or /v/ threads about it. I thought "the E3 presentation was neat, microsoft dumped a bunch of money into this, it's not like it's gonna be indie trash so how bad could it be?"

My god. So fucking bad.

BUTT FUCKING UGLY characters that are so hideous you are compelled to avert your eyes from the character creator- and the character creator is just a randomizer, and you can change your appearance at any time so it has no permanence.

Missions consist of boring fetch quests that SOMETIMES have a handful of enemies to kill, it's literally put to shame by even mediocre MMOs.

Enemy variety is nonexistent, there's maybe four types of pirate skeletons that pop out of the ground and that's IT. Combat is tedious with two repetitive sword animations, no combos or special abilities, and controls are sluggish. Guns almost useless due to their low ammo count.

Ship control and management is autistic, you actually need to be taking it seriously and communicating with your crew to get anything done. Impossible to solo play, and you'll get wasted constantly even as a pair in a small ship designed to be controlled by two people. You need four. The only redeeming feature of the game is how seriously they took the sailing aspect, but it's one of the worst aspects when you don't have a full crew or get matched with idiots and gets BTFO by AC: Black Flag.

Even with how easy the missions are, it's more efficient to just grief other players, camping at ports and boarding their ships to steal all their stuff when they come in to finish a quest. You can just kill them and take their shit when they're 10 feet from the quest giver, and redeem it yourself even if you never started that particular quest. Victims are generally powerless to prevent this, and this behavior was encouraged by the devs because pirates are criminals.

And then after all that, there's no meaningful progression, so you're suffering through this garbage fire for no reason at all. You can't get better gear, you can't get better more fun missions, you can't get better ships or more powerful cannons, you can't claim an island as your own and make a cool base, there's no story, there is NOTHING to reward you except cosmetics. And the griefers aren't interested in your differently colored shovel or headband.

I would rather play literally anything else than try to get back into Sea of Thieves. I would rather play shit from the early 2000's with game breaking glitches and weird low budget graphics. I would rather buy Star Citizen jpegs and delude myself into thinking I'll get to fly them one day. I would rather spend my time fingering a meth whore in a redneck dive bar. It's that fucking bad.

From what I hear, content for SoT is going to slow down as production on Rare's new game is starting to ratchet up. Rumor is it's a new Conker title based on the old sequel they never got around to being able to make when MS first bought them out.

Really hope it's not true. With Rare being at the helm, I doubt it'll be full on "Oh, Heck!" - but it's still CY+ and MS at the helm so I can't see it as being anything other than completely neutered for the sake of staying PC.

I've been playing solo for a little while now. It's useless to command a galleon solo and pretty much impossible to get anything done, so the sloop is a better ship for solo players. With the single mast design of the sloop you only have to worry about the raising/lowering/angling the main sail, rather than main sail, fore sail, and mizzen sail of a galleon. The sloop has far less firepower than a galleon, considering the sloop only has two canons compared to the eight on a galleon, but the sloop's advantage is in its maneuverability. The sloop is smaller and faster compared to the other two ship types in Sea of Thieves, and the anchor takes less time to raise in a sloop, so you can use anchor turns to easily outmaneuver players on a galleon. The helm of a sloop also takes fewer revolutions to turn the ship about. Games like Assassin's Creed IV: Black Flag or Assassin's Creed Rogue certainly have better content than Sea of Thieves, but when it comes to sailing, Sea of Thieves is much more in depth and less automated compared to the Assassin's Creed games. Sailing in Assassin's Creed was at its best in Assassin's Creed III but only became more streamlined with IV and on.

Even though I feel comfortable outmaneuvering galleons in a sloop, I still refuse to take a galleon on directly since I'm always outmatched in firepower and players, so I'm forced to run away. But I was able to unlock the achievement for hoarding 20 treasure chests all to myself while playing solo in a sloop, so there's that, I guess. However, the biggest problem for me is the kraken. I find it impossible to take on by myself. Kraken encounters are random but they tend to happen whenever a skull fort isn't active. The first time I came across the kraken in my sloop, I was unprepared. It was the middle of the night, the lights on my ship were out as I didn't want to attract other players, so it was pitch black. The kraken sucked me into one of its tentacles, I cut at the tentacle a few times with my sword, then I fell into the sea. However, the sea was filled with ink, so I couldn't see where I was going, I couldn't get my bearings, and somehow I was taking damage while in the water, so I died before I could get back to my sloop.

The second time I encountered the kraken, I was a little more prepared, but it still overpowered me. They say the kraken was nerfed and dealt less damage towards sloop players, but I had a tough time all by myself.

There's also the Devil's Roar region with all the volcanoes. I've received some treasure maps for islands in that area, but I don't dare to venture that way yet as I've never been there and I don't know what it's like. With all the debris and the boiling water it'd be tough for me to go back and forth around the islands there by myself. At least the rowboats were added so I don't have to swim in boiling water and take damage, but getting in and out of the rowboats seems like it eats up a lot of time and it'd be easier to go to Devil's Roar with a good crew.

Find a game with better sailing mechanics than Sea of Thieves and I would drop Sea of Thieves. If there are no other alternatives then I'd rather hop back into Sea of Thieves and mess around with people.

I almost managed to defeat the kraken by myself last night, I think. I was putting up a decent fight, I had a ton of wood to repair my ship as necessary, stocked up on cannonballs, and I even managed to cut down a few tentacles. I saw one or two bits of kraken meat floating in the water. Then a crew in a galleon came in and someone on that crew killed me while the kraken was still active. Those people started babbling about how they wanted my sloop for some Athena faction or whatever? I wasn't sure what that was about. Something new for Pirate Legends in the game?

it's a meme that games hand out achievements like candy at the start but this is why, to indicate how many games get started and how many are actually played even if only a tiny bit. it's probably higher than expected since this piece of shit is on xbox game pass and they give away 90 days of that for a dollar
