In all seriousness, the game holds up well because it has no fat or filler like most JRPGs. No segment goes on for too long and the game ends before it starts to get boring or repetitive.

Dragon Ball is a love it or hate it show, but it is uncultured for a jrpg fan to reject the Dragon Quest series. You should at least give V or III a try before writing it off.

There's enough story content to fill 20+ hours without resorting to bogging you down with random encounters every ten steps. The game feels enormous and open-ended but very rarely makes you feel lost, even with five different time periods to explore it's always clear where you need to go without needing to put a dumb map marker in your face. The game actually gives you the choice of where and when you want to fight Lavos, and has a variety of endings based on it. Level progression is handled excellently, with practically no grinding required to advance the story. There aren't any repetitive sections or fetch quests except the optional Lost Sanctum in the DS version which is nothing but repetitive fetch quests. Humor, charm and awe are found in spades.

Very few games manage to believably pull off the old AN ANCIENT EVIL HAS RETURNED shtick, but Lavos easily carries the most cataclysmic weight of any world-killing jRPG villain save Majora, and kicking its ass for the first time really makes you feel like Batman like the time transcending badass you've turned Crono into by the end if you decided to resurrect him after he gets killed.

Also it's fun.

Chrono Trigger is the kind of game that, nowadays, shitty weebs would ostracize and demonize as casual. It is fun, appeal and the kind of story that everyone likes: a modern equivalent would be FF7 and Xenoblade 1.

It is one of the major problems of american anime fandom: normalfag yier hipsterism against anything that doesn't cater to their little club mentality. No other country has this problem, see France where narutards happily coexist with serial experiments lain.

Some old JRPGs are laid out in a way that your brain fills in the blanks and makes it seem like a living breathing world. Chrono Trigger does this. Golden Sun and Terranigma do it too. Some Dragon Quest games do it. For some reason Bravely Default doesn't quite have the same feeling. For me it's to do with the map, the world, and the setting. They have to feel like they were made with love. If the devs put a little bit of their soul into the game you can feel it.
