I think both Metal Sonic and Shadow are valid rivals for sonic but for different reasons.
While Metal Sonic tries to autistically challenge Sonic to prove he is better than him every chance he has just so he can prove to be the actual sonic and going to surprisingly autistic lenghts so do so, Shadow stopped giving a shit about Sonic after SA2, but it just so happen that Sonic always gets in Shadow's way and vice versa, thus they always have to face each other on top of being pretty similar in almost every aspect.

Shadow irks me as a rival most because he hardly fits the definition anymore. In SA2 he fought Sonic just as Metal Sonic would. Challenged to a race, similar moves, similar appearances and the like. But now Shadow doesn't even remember Sonic's existence unless Sonic is a hurdle Shadow has to jump to reach his own separate goal. In that sense, Knuckles could even constitute as a rival. And since then, all of their interactions have just been conflicts of interest. I just respect Metal Sonic as a rival more because he's quite literally weaponized autism. Shadow's independent motives might be why I don't like considering him a rival anymore.

I don't think you need to be an evil clone to be a good rival at all, even if it's valid. I think both their motivations are valid and they both make good rivals for different reasons. The reason I don't consider Knuckles a good rival anymore is first, because he is actually too close to Sonic as a friend and secondly because they are way too different. Then again, you can say Sonic is a rival to Tails in a way, his song is even about that.

I don't get why Vergil still tries to kill humans in DMC5. He separated his demon and human form to live more and demon form did all of this shit, so I guess I can give it a pass. But after becoming one again, Vergil still tries to do his evil shit. In DMC 3 he wanted power to protect people he lived (assuming there is one). He wasn't neccesarily pure evil, for example he could kill Dante easily at the first fight, but he just wanted to show that demonic side is more powerful than human side, that's why you get your first DT there.
At the end of DMC 3 Vergil admitted his defeat and sacrificed himself, he respects and loves his brother (nohomo) and I was expecting him to be in Dante's side after all of this shit. I thought he would've realised that human side or whater the autism is, can be as stronger as demonic side, that's how Dante wins. But they really went full nostalgiafaggotry for no reason in DMC 5. I don't know much about manga or novel but I don't remember Vergil killing an innocent for no reason. (Arkham doesn't count as innocent).
Well at least Vergil didn't go full autistic at the end of DMC 5. I hope he finally beats his mental issues with the support of his brother and joins the cool kids club. Imagine Vergil protecting Nero and others, killing demons with 2-3 precise cuts. That would be pretty awesome.

You can also see that Sam had some moments to easily kill Raiden, but he didn't because he wanted his revenge. How? Basically let Raiden kill Armstrong. Every other boss directly wanted to kill Raiden or defeat him by making him realise he has no real purpose. At some point Sam fucked Raiden's mentality by showing him why he is wrong and why it doesn't matter so he can go full edge mode.
The most obvious one is, he programmed his sword to be usable to Raiden. And that sword could be used to defeat Armstrong. At the end Sam got his revenge, that's why the game is called "revengeance". Bonus points for the last boss music. It might seem like it resembles Armstrong but it it resembles more to Sam.
I think Sam is hot and he could be best buddies with Raiden. They would probably have friendly duels and drink beers

I can agree that Shadow does qualify as a rival to Sonic under certain circumstances. Although Metal Sonic fits the "evil clone" definition remarkably better than Shadow, and can persistently serve as a rival, whereas Shadow can essentially serve either as an ally or enemy only when it benefits the plot. Shadow's lack of reasoning to be the rival is why Metal Sonic takes the cake in my eye. Metal Sonic can constitute as a rival at all times, yet Shadow is only a rival when at odds with Sonic if it influences his endgame.
