to be fair, last Nintendo system I owned was a Gamecuble and I wouldn't mind having more games on this new handheld without the hassle of hacking the system. Hell I've never even owned a GBA or GBC. I've been emulating their games for over 15+ years. If I give Nintendo a few bucks after I've been such a hook-nosed cheapskate I don't really feel like they are the ones being the Jews.

Got a theory about this.

>Only X amount of good retro games on the VC. Eg: no one want to buy games like Urban Champion, Tennis, over factors like limited gameplay, clunkyness, overpriced or people skipping them to buy a better "modern" equivalent. Gaming websites reviewing these VC games and giving them low scores doesn't help.

>Why buy NES Tennis when you could get Mario Tennis N64 and get way more content, replayability and better multiplayer and you only have to pay double the NES games price? (1000 instead of 500 Wii Points)

>Users only buy the good games they never got to play back in the day (eg: the classics if you will). The VC also DOES NOT HAVE SALES, basically stopping users from even wanting to consider any other lower quality retro game

>So Nintendo stops doing the VC digital store and now uses their (NES) retro backlog (with online multiplayer) as a drawcard for users who get an Nintendo Switch Online subscription

>These users will still play the good NES games (Mario, Zelda, etc) while getting to try the worse games (Urban Champion) or clunky games (Ice Climber) without any buyers remorse

167ff7  No.16513261

Short answer: Nintendo is retarded

Long answer: Nintendo thought that people would be so excited to sign up for a service that offers NES games every month that it basically acts as a replacement for the standard model. Additionally they're saving the virtual console for the Switch Pro in order to get people to buy more games and forget about the ones they bought on WiiU/3DS

Nintendo wants you to pay for online once those games come out on the service.

a201ee  No.16513371

For whatever reason Nintendo seems to feel the need to relaunch the service on every system they put it on Wii, 3DS, Wii U, switch.

Can't say I'm a super fan of the current incarnation of it. Maybe they feel like they can't just give the games people own on 3DS/Wii U to them even though that history is on a new permanent registry that doesn't need any ancillary service to track.

Ok I think I know why they ditched the vc.

Basically, shit like mega man legacy collection is what killed it.

Why pay 30 dollars for 6 different megaman emulators with limited content, when you can pay like 20 for those same games, plus bonus challenges and concept art.

And with new shit like the castlevainia collection, megamanx, namco museum, sonics mega drive classics, atari flashback, and so on. You get a better bang for your buck with more content.

Now say both these compilations, and the virtual console are still being supported.

With the wiiu you had an option to transfer over your wii data and rebuy older games for a discount, a poor buisness practice but none the less, say that concept of rebuying older games comes back for switch when all these better offers are coming out.

Why would any company put out a version of one game that would compete with a compilation that contains the same game.

And with the lack of third party on the vc, a vast majority of classic nes and gb games being boring, games from the game cube era katamari reroll, re4, okami hd being stand alone titles. As well as handheld titles lacking multiplayer, they had to remake pokemon gens 1-2 to fix that. The vc just can't beat these game compilations any more.

Economically speaking you're correct, but having to dedicate a portion of the screen as blank space, or leaving it and ending up having it obscured with your fingers because of the anemic touch control setup modern phones are saddled with will always be inferior to having a device with dedicated tactile controls.

even if those controls are sweatshop tier in build quality and ergonomic quality, touch screen controls are the lowest common denominator. The only reason you would logically use a phone is because playing on your phone, Emulators or otherwise, is more socially acceptable than a dedicated mobile games console, esp. in public settings.

No need to get your panties in a knot just because someone happens to disagree with you on the internet, friendo.

Because it's officially developed emulation and is basically perfect. People will do the same thing they did on the 3DS. Take the official emulation ROM. figure out where the emulator ends and the game begins, and casually swap the game with a different game.

Bam, one ROM gives access to the entire emulated console library.

a0e4ab  No.16516038

emulating on touchscreen requires a bluetooth controller.

1e9946  No.16516042

Because there is no benefit to them from doing so.

With the new online, they're giving games away for free. Whereas with prior VC, they could make money. If their online wasn't successful, they'd add more, but since it is, they don't need to. Want VC? Make the online fail. But good luck with that, considering three of the Switch's biggest games, being MK8, Smash and Splat, are gatekept behind online, and so will Mario Maker 2 which will be huge as well.

Sage because the thread is shit, even if the topic isn't.

Wrong. On VC, Ocarina of Time and Majora's Mask can crash, and in OoT at least, multiple graphical effects are not emulated properly (Morpha or the Mirror Shield charging up during Twinrova) while the game never crashes and those effects are emulated properly on a PC emulator.

I own an LG G7. Its shit. Smartphones have more or less peaked in terms of horsepower because you can't beat thermal and battery constraints. They will always be trash for emulation and there will never be an exception to this rule. Ever. Smartphones as a platform have had over a decade to prove themselves as serious machines for this kind of thing and the ship has long sense sailed. No amount of rooting your devices will make it any better and exactly 0 people are still impressed you can run Mupen 64 on Android with Majoras Mask at 20 fps as your phone thermal throttles and starts smelling like burning plastic as the LCD backlight shits itself from thermal stress of the poor dying little thing. Smartphones are great for simple games, great for web browsing, great for emulating only the simplest of consoles. Anything beyond a certain point is purely for novelty and always will be

a0e4ab  No.16516313

PS1 emulation is as far as I've ever seen on smartphones. Actually, when I think of mobile emulation I just think of handhelds & snes.

54761e  No.16516341

>>16516313

For emulating older RPGs Smartphones can be great, don't get me wrong. But they are far from a means to an end and even still most emulators as old as the SNES era in my experience can really push those poor ARM cores and make your hand sweat. In all fairness I think half the problem is also Android itself. Even after the introduction of Android Runtime and the Bionic C library devs still essentially need to bootstrap Java to their apps. Hence why Android apps still run like trash compared to their iOS counterparts even on comparable hardware

2. Can you think of at least a dozen games you'd like to play on it?

3. Are you not-dumb enough to track down and install games/patches/firmware/homebrew/etc.?

4. Is the idea of handheld or tabletop mode at all appealing?

5. Do you have money to burn?

If you answered yes to all the above, maybe. However, you have to consider accessories too.

Definitely get: glass screen protector (screen is soft plastic), 200GB+ microSD (they go on sale occasionally), payload injector (need for booting system with CFW; android phone also works)

Consider: case (if you're taking it anywhere), an actual stand, that Hori left controller with the D-pad

> have been ported natively to android which were all written in C++

There is no such thing as truly native code in Android. You CAN port C/C++ programs to it, but again, you still need to bootstrap Java because of how Android works. This was a compromise Google basically had to make when introducing Android Runtime to avoid compatibility issues with older software. Android Runtime tries compiling Java to native code but even compiled Java will never be as fast as properly optimized code.
