Is watching games more enjoyable than playing them?
It's difficult to understand the popularity of twitch, it seems like watching someone else play a game would be fundamentally unsatisfying - immersive moments are talked over, you don't get to make gameplay decisions, and the streamer (probably) doesn't give a fuck about you.
So why is it so damn popular?

In this age of rampant feminism killing male camaraderie and causing many men to feel like unwanted outsiders, they turn to escapism. Video games, anime, comics, manga, books, films etc. are their avenues to escape the hell of modern life but we are all human and so even these broken men still desire kinship. This is where streamers come into play, a lot of them are the broken men who want to stream to keep busy, to show off their skills or to keep a dull game a bit more lively due to having to provide a stream people will watch. Further consider that socializing is an abomination of what it once was, people meet up and hang out only to spend a good deal of that time on their phones texting others. Its very impersonal now and people are social creatures.

On one hand yes, and I do not watch twitch nor let's plays at all.
On the other, I remember spending countless hours 'playing' single-player games with a friend back in primary school. I'd come over and we'd do dumb shit in the game, and even though he was the one actually playing, it was still fun. That's pretty much what Twitch is, except instead of being sure your friend listens to you and your ideas, you just hope the streamer sees your message or maybe you even pay so you're sure that he does.
Also, how is watching video games different from watching sports? Unless you're knowledgable about the mechanics, training, tricks etc. that the sportsmen do, it's essentially the same on the surface.

I used to watch chuggaconroy, because he was playing Nintendo games, and I didn't have a Nintendo console, nor did I have a PC powerful enough to emulate them. Plus, when I was a kid, I found him entertaining, but watching one of his videos now, he seems dull and boring.
Here are some reasons why, I think, someone would watch a LP
>he is entertaining, and funny
>he plays shit games and makes fun of them(why would I waste my time playing shit games?)
>they provide background noise, for when you do other stuff, such as playing vidya, cokking, cleaning, doing other shit(tough this is more listening than watching)
>he is a developer/someone extremely knowledgeable about the game, and the LP has all sorts of facts and trivia about the game

Some 'video games' are fucking awful but are interesting for reasons other than being video games. Hence why we get uncommon time streams here, that way only one person needs to suffer through actually 'playing' them. To a lesser degree a lot of the content that the main vinesauve guy displays fits this, but fortunately most of it is recorded so you're capable of skimming through to the interesting things without having to rely on twitch and the rest of the associated autism. Other than that I can't really fathom it. Normalfags that are too pathetic to make friends and pretend that the streamer is a friend of theirs is an explanation I hear a lot.

I am a long time stream watcher. Never watched any girls, mainly just doods who are super good at games (mario, iwbtg, spelunky, etc), or are genuinely entertaining to watch (i.e. not forcing entertainment but rather just playing in such a way it happens naturally - gaming shitposters so to say). I confess I still watch witwix, yes I know he's a degenerate, I still find him funny, and entertaining
With new twitch rules it became harder and harder to shitpost at games, mainly because of language police, and also because most of those streamers are generating butthurt for overly sensitive twitch soyboys and sluts (one just used to draw bad political cartoons in mspaint shitting over a certain community a good deal - not a very famous streamer, 500 viewers average, 2k tops - but well known so much, the regional office of the game he mained knew him very well, and hated a lot)
For some of us it was a kind of kinship feeling, as most viewers had similar opinions on certain topics inb4 circlejerk, yes, there is always a circlejerk where there is a certain consensus on a certain opinion. I haven't developed any lasting friendships from there, but some people did, and they are still good friends by this day.
Now I only watch it when I have absolutely nothing else to do and don't feel like doing anything (so, not very often, maybe 1 hour a week), so I kind of concur that watching twitch regularly in 2019 is an act of enormous faggotry.

If you're asking this question, you're missing the point of streaming. The vast majority of people watching a stream are not doing it as a substitute for playing the game, but for more casual entertainment when they can't or don't want to actually play it. They might be partially busy or they may simply have played the game a lot already: watching someone play a game for the first time can be enjoyable in a way you can no longer get by playing it. Some other reasons people watch streams:
>to git gud (by watching someone who is really good)
>to hang out/play multiplayer when you have no friends who like [Game]
>to see real gameplay for an honest preview of a game you're considering downloading
>to get ideas for new games to play (from someone who plays variety and has similar taste)
Twitch may be cancerous, but there are plenty of understandable reasons people like it.

Cheering/reacting. You can't see them without 2 extensions, but Twitch users use emotes to react to shit happening, Pog and PagChomp is something cool that the streamer pulled off, LULW and OMEGALUL is laughing at his failure. I'm watching that very same stream right now, it's entertaining enough to keep in the background while playing something and the chat is basically ultra fast memey shitposting. That streamer in specific is one of the good ones because he's relatively varied in the stuff he plays and even if he's playing the most boring shit imaginable the chat makes it tolerable. I've watched him on and off for about a year, maybe a year and a half now.

The only reason you'd ever watch somebody else play a video game is if they're better than you, and you want to see something impressive, or see how they do it. The latter only applies if you're a visual learner. Most of the good streamers have low populations. They have played a game 500+ times and can explain parts of it better than any guide or forum post. Generally, if you watch them for more than 10 sessions, you will notice that most of their content is repeated. I'm not sure about faggots who only play video games, but for those who also make them, it can be useful in understanding what parts of a game create tension or frustration. Understanding how to create tension but minimize frustration can allow you to create a game that is better than it deserves to be.

This is the correct answer. People are stupid, lonely faggots and throwing money at streamers is the only way many of them have any form of human interaction, or anything that resembles it.
Have any of you ever found social interaction with normalfags to be draining? Have you ever felt like everyone around you was dishonest and superficial? You know, typical /doomer/ stuff.
Everyone feels that because it's everywhere, especially in large cities. Normalfags just don't react to it the same way we do because they think that kind of crippling, paranoia-induced isolation is normal. Instead of detaching from normalfag society and finding image boards/religion/a hobby, they simply double down and seek surrogate friends like twitch streamers or LPers.
It's similar to the effect porn has on a man's brain, or that social media has on a woman's: you seek it out repeatedly because it's an instantly gratifying dopamine rush, and it asks nothing of you like a normal friendship does.
Many people who live this lifestyle (city-dwellers, leftists, etc.) are also complete basket cases when they aren't stapling their masks to their faces. If you go onto any social media profile for one of them, you're guaranteed to find hundreds of posts saying:
>shoutouts to the recent donors!
>great going, you are my favourite person!
>i just got a ncie commission from xxxx and i literally cant???? even???? say now nice it was?????
But every now and again there will be a few different posts, either to different subreddits or using different accounts.

pic related to thot discussion: for WEEKS this month I would always get this chick "recommended" to me when I would go to my twitch page. I don't know why Twitch does this, I don't click on shit like this (although Twitch probably knows I'm male, maybe that is all it takes…). I started taking screenshots to document how ridiculous it was getting.
I feel bad for anyone who wants to browse Twitch in public. If someone glanced over my shoulder it would look like a pornhub thumbnail. You can't complain about this shit on normal parts of the internet though, because feminists and beta males will defend twitch sluts to death. There's even a kotaku article about this girl trying to gin up sympathy for her.
I wonder what it is like growing up with video sluts directly in your face all the time. When I was a kid, I remember masturbating a few times to hot female presenters on TV, and that would have been modest clothing.

But like you said, if you point it out then you get called an incel, a term that never made sense to me. I could rape women, but choose not to, which makes me not an incel. LobosJr is the posterboy for what's so fucking obnoxious about "regular" Twitch (i.e., excluding the whores).
1. His commentary couldn't be more uninteresting. Most streamers don't seem to actually commentate and react to what is happening like you would expect from a Let's Player. It pisses me off. They zone in and out of reading chat, and reactions are often staged or exaggerated. If there isn't anything interesting in chat for a brief pause, some streamers will say next to nothing until they have something to read. And usually that thing they read is a non-sequitur question or comment.
2. His "jokes" are fucking annoying. 90% of it is just mispronouncing stuff, sometimes mispronouncing the same damn word over and over.
3. Constantly having to thank donations, subs and all that annoying shit that no one fucking cares about. Yes, you pay your rent by essentially going "hey, you could be sending me money!" every 60 seconds, but this just makes me think about all the psychological manipulation going on.
4. Despite being really good at the game, he doesn't play it normally and he barely understands how to play it normally should he want to. Not the biggest problem since watching someone struggle can be fun too, but it can also be fucking embarrassing since you come off as disconnected from your average viewer. In this case, since the streamer has played Dark Souls a bazillion times, being wrong about two handing or showing that he doesn't know how to actually fight a normal fucking encounter (because he always runs past it) is stupid.
5. He has to repeat the same stuff over and over. In a normal Let's Play, you can explain any special mods or goals at the start of the first video and you don't have to explain unusual tricks or events every. single. fucking. time. (and then explain it twice if someone missed it 10 seconds ago)
6. Twitch chat is an ad nausem loop of the same retarded questions and the most retarded attempts at cracking "reaction jokes".

Watching someone else play has benefits if they are really good. You can enjoy things like speedruns or challenge runs without putting in the hundreds or thousands of hours needed to do them well yourself. It's entertaining and requires far less time investment. You can also see someone else play a game to see if the game might be worth playing. However 99% of all streamers are cancer who are shit at games and only do it for attention or money or both. The twitch whores and the soycucks who support them are a special breed of aids that could all die today and the world would only get better.

The illusion of "helping".
You see twitch allows for hundreds of thursty nerds to play out their fantasy of showing off to a gurrrl game on a video game and "helping" them.
They do this at a fee of donation.
With camgirls (actual whore sites) and porn. It's mostly a boxed system that your there for only one single reason. To jerk it. Theres no real attachment to be made with such indivisuals. They're whores, what kind of attachment would there be anyway? But with twitch thots theres an illusion that they aren't complete whores but just innocent "gurrl gamers" who are just shit at games and need YOU to help them with your amazing god like skill!
It's the same concept with play mates, however with twitch thots instead of showing them ingame your actual skill, you can just pretend to be skilled and throw money at the screen. Living out the fantasy but not actually having any in the first place.

>why watch twitch thots when you can just look at actual porn
Because they aren't whores, just attention whores, and so they not only typically have a more approachable and thus a "nearer" feeling to them (they feel like girls you could conceivably meet in real life, unlike porn whores who clearly all live in the fetid swamp of L.A.) but also because they supplement people's desire for human interaction, friendship and even expecially a girlfriend.
It's why the most successful Twitch sluts–and any girl who is exposing cleavage and bending over or being an attention whore is a slut, without a doubt, just not paid for it like whores–are those who NEVER bring on or mention a boyfriend.
They take pages out of the Japanese idol's book, where they don't mention having a guy or being with a guy sexually, but they will mention wanting a guy in the vague sense of wanting to be in love, or mentioning something vague about maybe kinda sorta being possibly into desiring a relationship.
Twitch "thots" and their success is emblematic of our fractured society, but not only them, also ALL TWITCH AND ALL STREAMERS AND ALL YOUTUBERS only exist with any success because people

It is an imitation of social interaction, but I don't understand how it holds up in the bigger streams. If you're watching someone with thousands or even just hundreds of viewers on at once your post is just going to get drowned in the torrential flood of shit in the chatbox and donating is the only way to get noticed. What is really annoying is that it's started the trend of every bit of game footage having some obnoxious, utterly banal commentary. If you just want to find some footage of a game you have to specifically search "no commentary" in the string or you get one of the billions of failed streamers or youtubers putting out some shitty footage with their annoying mug overlaying it. I can understand if someone has some insightful commentary to add, or if they're just a good entertainer and videogame streaming is the medium they choose to use, but for a lot of these streamers who endlessly blab to fill dead air but really have nothing to add it's just… what are they even providing?

It's easier to turn on some random streamer rping gta for background noise, or one I like who is playing something. Or Alternatively watch youtube, though content becomes redundant over time as you've seen the youtubers vids you like. I guess one of the advantages twitch has is that streamers often just make constant new content nearly daily, whereas youtubers make something once a week usually, since the editing and such is harder and takes longer than just streaming.

I never got this background noise shit, it seems so distracting. Can't you just focus on what you are doing? I guess it might make sense if you are doing some really monotonous grinding, but otherwise it just seems like it would lessen the enjoyment you could get from full investment in the game you're playing.

Twitch is fine, would recommend. Sure there's plenty of cancer like e-begging and streamer thots, but same could be said about other sites like youtube yet there's plenty of good stuff on youtube. Focusing too much on the cancer is a bit silly.
Twitch is good for two things. One is the community. A streamer with just 100-200 viewers can easily get a room full of players very quickly. Pretty neat for semi-dead games. Join the same game with the streamer and have fun instantly instead of having to wait for hours just to get a game going. Other thing twitch is good for is the e-sport and the whole competitive scene. Watching better players play is a good way to learn to get good and learn new strategies. Then there's the whole pro-scene with tournaments and stuff which can be fun to watch if you're into that kind of stuff. The worst thing about twitch is how aggressively monetized it is which can be quite off-putting for some but if you can ignore that then it's quite nice website. I've never given a single cent to a streamer.
Other than that, Twitch is literally IRC+stream. You can even join the channels with your IRC client. If you can get the appeal of IRC then you should be able to get the appeal of Twitch.

I don't believe that the most of you are older than 20, I don't want to act like some gatekeeper or insult younger people, but most of the people I know even the """hardest gamers"""" start to move on once they hit university or get a job. Add to that that most games nowadays are just rehashes and I don't mean things like Assassins Creed or the yearly CoD,BF, the list keeps going, I mean that modern game design just tries to copy old games without any improvement or new ideas. I can't remember playing a game in the last decade and think "Neat what a nice idea", if you played the basic games that are known as classic todays you played them all.
I think streaming is such a nice thing, older lads sure remember that Twitch.tv used to be Justin.tv, and man I fucking loved Justin.tv
There wasn't much money to be made so people just did it for fun, you could watch Movies,Anime,Games together or just chit chat. It had a really comfy vibe to it. I think after own3d.tv and justin.tv went down (jtv transformed to twitch) it became clear they wanted to monetize the plattform way harder now. After amazon bought twitch.tv it just went downhill with the ewhoring, sluts dancing of cams, soyboy playing shitters jumping on the newest hype trains to get their pitty views.
The gaming industry nowadays is just fucked, you have to think about it like this, our modern gaming industry resembles the early days of las vegas. So much money is made trough gambling. (lootboxes are gambling, if you don't think it is, seek help)

>surrogate friends for lonely people
>feminism killing male camaraderie, pushing men to escapism & the aforementioned surrogate friends

Here's mine:
>too dumb/lazy to learn how to play more technical games thus watch someone else do it
>watch people play genres that you don't enjoy, but they do (in this instance it is genuinely superior to playing the game yourself)
Anecdotally, I watch Robbaz because he is willing to learn the minutia of technical games that I don't want to learn. This can sometimes be detrimental though because some of the games he plays are so autistic that they are boring to watch. He can be creative, humorous and his content isn't sterilized to the point of being cringey, unfunny, ad-friendly faggotry like PewDiePie the vastly inferior Swede. Only once did I try Twitch chat and found it to be a group of paypigs on mindless auto-pilot hammering out empty reactions while throwing good money away. Speedruns can be neat to watch, since runners often have to do many difficult to perform tricks in short succession, but can get boring when they repeatedly reset. Early Twitch/Justin TV and current twitch are so vastly different it's hard to compare them. On Early twitch you would find nerds and could find obscure games. Now Twitch is a popularity contest full of sponsored content who don't even mention it's sponsored.
It's like speed running used to just be autistic quake players trying to find ways to break the engine. Now it's kids reading wikis to play mario 64 1 second faster. They repeat motions they don't understand themselves because they think it will get them attention and a temporary escape from their self imposed misery.
Twitch today is little more than corporate background noise. Which sponsors a lot of the poz in gaming. Amazon owns it and they give money to roasties, queers and freaks to get more attention. Twitches only real "perk" is that it's easier to raise cash on it than on other video platforms. A kid giving you 50 bucks on his mothers credit card is a whole lot easier than youtube.

That's only for a competitive game that is no longer in the limelight, such as the one you posted. Any time a game is new the view counts are much higher, and those high viewcounts are driven by unbearable faggots like Destiny failing at the game and getting mad at stream chat when they try to correct him. Your anecdotal screenshot is also countered by my anecdote of seeing a Brazillian former porn star make salad in the League of Legends category. That was one of the top 5 popular streams that day.

Now I only watch one single Twitch streamer either live or on YT afterwards because he has really interesting mods and playthroughs, like a modded BB run. I think you may be on to something, actually. It's a male instinct to help attractive women, not only because if you do it in the right way she might like you, but even if not it's always better to help preserve the "good genes" (supposed to be reflected in appearance, but this is too easy to spoof with modern technology) for the good of the community. In other words, a cuck tipping his fedora for milady technically helps out by preventing miladys feet from getting sore or whatever even though he isn't banging her. In a way, it could be said that adding sex as a direct reward to this equation makes it less appealing, because it would make the woman a whore in the literal sense, debasing her. But as long as she doesn't have sex where anyone can see or do raunchy things that suggests she has sex all the time (standards for this have fallen very rapidly), it preserves her value and makes her more attractive to more men. This is probably common sense to most on this board, but I never thought about the direct application in Twitch stream income.
It's the difference between "I'm going to give that slut ten bucks to take her shirt off" and "I'm just giving ten bucks to help out this lovely princess, oh look she accidentally bent over on camera while wearing yoga pants, silly princess haha!"

The only reason I ever watch anyone else playing games is that I'm unsure how good a certain game is and want to check out some gameplay before I buy/pirate. I'd guess normalfags do it because they can't do anything without social validation, and games are too nerdy and take too much effort to actually play.
Other than that, like other anons have said, the game might be interesting for reasons not at all related to gameplay, the streamer might be agreeable, and the mindless shitposting/memeing might be enjoyable to tasteless normalfags.

I've been in quite a few anon streams for shit like BMNight or mania and all of them have been at least slow enough to actually discuss something while you're there. Daily reminder that they are slowing moving the platform to be subscription based. You will need amazon prime to watch streams in the future. Unfortunate reality
>but muh dlive/p2p streaming
People are sheep. Streaming is absolutely going to become the new TV, people don't want funny streams with 5 viewers, they want to type meaningless garbage in a room with 20k viewers.
Twitch is specifically designed to foster this mindset. Everything is set up to funnel viewers into "big" streams who toe the party line because a solid 90% of their income comes directly from the whole Twitch Prime scam

Yeah but 99% of streamers are objective failures with <100 viewer counts who pull in maybe $5 a month from their "hobby." He's right that that top 1% of streamers is where 99% of the money and viewers are.
That's definitely part of twitch, possibly a larger part than the sad sacks who use streamers as friend emulators. Even for new or niche games, the most popular streamers are *usually* showing high level gameplay. There are exceptions, like DSP, who get popular because they are dumpster fires, twitch thots, and people like pewdiepie who absolutely are aiming for the friend simulator audience.

It's really not. In fact, you're currently victim to exactly why. You're on a video games forum talking about video games or other tangentially related dumb shit. Why are you here? Shared interest. Why do people watch people on Twitch? To talk endlessly about yet another useless hobby. It's just retards talking to retards forever. And just like anything with names attached it comes with dipshit celebrities of the same ilk. Jesus christ, special interest magazines and clubs thrives when people didn't have the internet, what the fuck did you think was gonna happen when you gave the entire population access to a collective chalkboard?
Just wait until TV starts hosting chats and fan discussions in earnest. Imagine owning a product and hosting your own fan driven book club. Steer that discussion.

Japan was years ahead of the west with streaming video conventions. I remember watching Japanese streams of television and there was a shitload of text scrolling across the screen, and I thought "who the hell would want to watch this? It's so distracting.
