One of the side quests in Shadow Hearts: Covenant rewards Joachim with a bludgeon named “The Dark Tower.” It’s basically a miniature (comparatively; it’s still like 4-5 feet tall) of their publisher Aruze’s office building, and even throws the logo in on the roof to make it more clear. A dialogue about it between Joachim and his imouto.

The weapon description says similar:

Implication could be read into it a few different ways I suppose, be it that Aruze was a cranky publisher to deal with, or that the devs themselves were irritated to be working under them. I say that mainly because some former Nautilus staff later went on to say that Aruze was already angry with them after SH1’s release, being that sales were low even natively in Japan, and that they got chewed out about why they couldn’t make something more “normal” (I’d guess they thought ex-Square devs would mean Square-tier sales). Given how Covenant and FtNW, while lighter, were hardly games with normalfag appeal or sales in the slightest, cheeky “nip at the hand” behavior like calling the Aruze Building “The Dark Tower” and the people within as stressed/stress inducing strikes me as right at home. Also that Nautilus included a similar, separate (stronger) weapon to represent them as the developers (a miniature submarine), and to me it wouldn't make much sense to double up on the same point. I suppose the biggest question is if Nautilus worked in the same building directly, or just had to report to Aruze as their dark masters.

Too bad Aruze eventually had enough of their shit and dissolved them. Some of the former staff went on to help Mistwalker with Lost Odyssey.

The Aruze logo also shows up on the floor of the wrestling rings during the Man Festival, but that has it's own separate implications.

Mocking platforms is probably apt to be seen as more good-natured than mocking the publisher themselves, especially if it's an "everybody gets some" thing, or mainly targets a different line of system than what it's on. Granted, I suppose one could say the platform holder can still say what games get made for it, but unless they're doubling as publisher as well, it's not their money being used as funding.

When the game uses very little particle effects, but it still manages to convey important messages about the state of the game or give that extra immersion to it.

Examples of good particle effects: CTR had these very minute, simple effects for whenever you were running somewhere you're not supposed to be, which, in addition to sound cues and slower movement speed, allow you to fully understand what you're doing wrong. The exhaust of your kart is also a nice touch. Another good example would be in the No More Heroes series, where it's usually just for flair, but they completely disappear when you're not actually hitting someone, they're very simple in nature and don't blind you (except for the transformation ones that have an effect on the whole screen).

Conversely, shit like Smash Ultimate has a shitton of anime effects that play all over the place, not only they're extremely visually distracting, they usually cover a large area of the screen if not flat out hide gameplay elements. They're exaggerated and give no useful information about the current game. Very similar shit for TF2.

The more I play Grim Dawn, the more I love it.

Lots of tiny things in PoE, surprisingly. The one that always gets me is the grass burning whenever you hit it with fire from any skill. Even summoning raging spirits which has a flame effect at the start burns the grass. Grass burns more the more you introduce it to fire too, to the point where it eventually disappears.

In Persona, there's a room of brainwashed NPCs in one of the dungeons.

By the point the spell is broken, that room is a pretty long walk away and there's no practical reason to go back there, but the NPCs have new lines of dialogue anyway.

Which game? The biggest animation variety that comes to mind is Conker's idle animations. In any case I adore seeing little details in games. Even if the games themselves aren't good it shows that there was some degree of love put into it.

On that subject I have to suspect as bad as it was that the devs of Batman Forever had a lot of fun making it. All the enemies have ridiculous names, but they also have ridiculous attacks, especially the chainsaw guys and the clowns.

But one small detail that's nice is that, running concurrent with the story, the further in you get, the more in sync their "ROGER!" becomes. Leading to it being essentially one voice, at the end.
