Fucking best DS game in existence, great use of the dual screen gimmick. Music is varied, the map is nice and dense, good story, and the maincharacter actually has character development. The sidestory is great fun. Beaten it multiple times, but that secret final boss has eluded me for years. Faught it once, lost, never seen it again. Drives me nuts. Highly reccommended. You can play it emulated, I believe.

Even the original version stated that different cities have different games with different rules so they were clearly setting themselves up to make more games, but what ever came of that is left to be seen. A sequel would have been awesome around the time that Dream Drop Distance came out, but the ship has almost certainly sailed on the 3DS by now. That and I don't feel that a second game is warranted unless they can come up with a new mechanic to make it feel like a new experience. The gameplay would have to be different from the first game since even the port can't capture the feeling of the original.

Original DS title is some of the tightest fucking shit on DS, great ideas, excellent execution, lots of hidden little things like buying more stuff from shops gets them on the assistant's nice side and food having different effects on different characters, the one enemy you defeat by folding your DS over was insane when I first found out about it. The main gimmick is something I've not really seen attempted anywhere else but MAYBE with Henry Hatsworth, and even then you still get to pause one of the screens. All characters are really likeable and memorable, legitimately got emotional at Shiki's real form being revealed, Neku has actual depth as a character unlike most jrpg bullshit emo kids, the game even makes fun of that stereotype in the What-IF scenario, the pins were stylish as fuck, the soundtrack and Jap-urban Yankee aesthetic is something I have never seen, maybe you can make a case for Jet Set Radio but that game is in a league of its own. The post game content makes you want to revisit the whole game over, even though it's not necessarily useful at understanding the story, and the ability to lower your difficulty setting if a boss is tearing you a new cunt is a neat addition that helps you git gud without making you feel bad.
Anything past that is miserable, they didn't need to re-release this shit twice over with worse graphics or less game content, it's honestly a little disheartening they had to add more characters to what was essentially a complete experience.

TWEWY is clearly designed to break every JRPG convention possible, if you think about it. The experiment was largely successful in creating a good and unique game. I was unable to wrap my head around the dual screen battle gimmick though. I had a lot of fun playing as Neku and ignoring the partner as impossible to control, but in the third act the battles started to get a little old, so I didn't continue to the post-game content. The plot I found pretty much forgettable.

Sure, there were lots of great games on the DS, but most of these could have easily been on some other console, or PC, emulated or not and it just happened the platform they were on was the DS.

Best case scenario I can realistically see happening is "Mediocre sequel, but still has good new music".
My ideal sequel gameplay setup would be:

It does it again in week 3 where Beat both deals and takes an absurd amount of damage, making him a liability if you don't learn to actually play as him. This is further complicated by the fact that he is the only partner who moves while attacking, and the most complex fusion system in the game. And don't forget the game adding songs to the soundtrack over time, growing with Neku.

Between his very limited defensive options (his sidestep is less forgiving than Shiki's guard), and not doing any damage/hitstun until the end of his combo chain he takes a LOT of getting used to, especially since the game chooses that exact moment to introduce physical/ranged resistance and throws a boss at you that only takes damage from behind (which incidentally requires correct use of sidestep to avoid him just dying).

The gameplay just felt like I randomly tapped on the screen and mashed random buttons until I progressed. Maybe I was doing something more eloquent, but that's what I remember.
I hated the focus on fashion.
I hated the stereotypical emo protagonist. He reminded me of Raiden only with shittier social skills.
