It's cancer, and know I'm not defending, but it's a microscopically better than Micro$hit giving coders the option to hide their code behind a paywall with a proprietary license.

Of course, this being Micro$hit, I'd expect that (((feature))) to be brought soon.

>>16498299

we don't really need a new one, we need a way to separate the good and the bad that is more clear cut like in the older days

the internet has always been shit, but there also used to be this sort of understood notion that different communities occupy different turfs and have completely different sets of rules, modern internet is:

>monetization-driven

>low-effort browsing

>highly integrated

>highly cross-related

>with similar moderation

>with zero netiquette, or rather, identical etiquette and words

>faster than it had any right to be in themes not in service

and this is fucking everywhere, the same shitty experience you can get on reddit, cuckchan and dumblr is almost verbatim what you can get on social media, nu-forums and comment sections on any website of the new age. There's no division between what you act like on forums or anonymously, what you do on content-driven or interaction-driven platforms, it's the same shit regurgitated ad nauseam, takes twenty seconds for memes to get old and 90% of them are incredibly forced if not outright shilled by the people behind publicity stunts.

I really just wish for things to get separate again. So that the internet would get back to being this huge place full of amazement, where you would unironically get all giddy when you find out that you and someone else went to the same place all along, that wikidiving and getting to new websites was this huge adventure that left you with new knowledge and some funny injokes that you would tell to your close and/or internet buddies, that some new platform comes around and only word of mouth manages to get it off rather than being talked about it on twitter for a week before being engulfed in degenerates, trannies and communists. Fuck's sake. I'm becoming the boomer. I was the boomer all along, it was within me, wasn't it?

It's not shutting off repositories behind paywalls, it's a way to donate to them, so the comparison to paid mods is retarded. Doubly so because mods are typically not licensed as open software - the kike IP owners retain rights and the mod authors will claim ownership with a restrictive license. The more worrying aspect is that it acts as an enticement for developers to bow down to GitHub's pozzed staff, who may deem their code or attitude 'problematic', in exchange for better shekel prospects.

>paid mods

What the fuck is this bullshit clickbait OP? A lot of open source projects are done for free and fun but there's also plenty that ask for or rely on donations and a few projects are commercially interesting just for how powerful they are. This system looks no different to Patreon, and unlike Patreon, obligations, or at least expectations of source code will keep scummy shit in check since it's basically a donation system. Not a way to paywall. GPL especially, if you paywall code that is subject to external copyright, that's a violation. You must distribute it and your changes if you distribute at all.

>>16498191

Putting aside rotten aspects in Github itself, which happened well before the Microsoft buyout, Github hosts a lot of important projects, and Git as an SCM, by design, does not allow easy tampering especially when the network of trust comes into the picture. How do you tamper with the Linux kernel when thousands of people have a copy of it and the entire thing is checksummed to reasonable cryptographic standards?

>>16498218

>Is anyone performing a full backup of github or at least of projects worth following?

If you don't care about things like wikis and other side stuff, just git clone. Otherwise I don't know.

GitLab for example, but you can run git literally anywhere, even your own toaster. Git is what is doing the source control management, GitHub is just a web frontend plus free hosting. Set up a server in your basement, give it a URL and anyone can access your code from the command-line even without a web interface.

>>16501249

As I said already, how can they enforce that? Even permissive licensing breaks down when you try to hard-paywall it since it either is pointless, or worse, a proprietary license that will be snubbed by people who expect source-level access, and it will also cease to work with the critical mass of GPL software in existence.

0d2548  No.16501465

commercialism is a set of social norms being based around commodities and novelties where social value is determined around a person's wealth

Corporatism is a loose way of describing a form of government that is based around a set of trusts regulating society to maximize their success and prevent competitors from dethroning them via the market

Capitalism is an economic layout based around the market being as free as possible, with oversight being limited to fraud, trust regulation, and the prevention of monopolies, essentially everything else is fair game, and the system recognizes trusts and monopolies as an inherent threat to the system which is why legally the construction of monopolies and trusts is prohibited.
