Aztec is pretty uniquely aesthetically in that it's the only game i've seen that actually has an Aztec setting/aesthetic.
It's not just generic mish mash of Mesoamerican civilizations in generic jungle/desert ruins, it actually features specific historical Aztec cities with their notable landmarks (Xochimilco's canals, Chapultepec's aquaduct, etc for example), and while the aesthetics is heavily stylized and doesn't match Aztec visual motifds and shit exactly, it is going for something speffically stylized aztec rather then just every mesoamerican group's art motifs thrown in a blender.
Gameplay wise, it's a CURAYZEE beat em up with some light strategy elements in the overworld. The goal is to expand and make the core of the empire (since the map only coveres the core valley, not the further out cities/provinces) strong enough to fight back against the conquistadors when they show up, and then conflict brings you into actual gameplay sections.
The combat system has a stupid amount of depth, the fact the devs have done analysis's of games like DMC, Bayonetta, God of War, etc on their personal blogs before in depth and shit really shows

That doesn't really line up with the tone/humor in Space Funeral. Or at least even if it is coming from a similar place in that sprite game shit the humor is really grating.
Also I guess I found the 'message' behind space funeral and either the anon who told me about it was completely wrong or I was remembering it wrong. What I remember being told is that the game was a form of critique or some shit of amateur RPGmaker projects being doomed because of how difficult to live up to or replace the stock assets is. What I found on jewpedia: "The game's focus on "corruption" versus the "perfect" graphics of the default RPG Maker was used by the developer to decry what he believed was a modern form of classicism for the RPGs of the 1990s, where people believed they were the "peak" of video games and wanted to copy them as much as possible, instead of experimenting and trying new things. He believed that when RPG Maker games break from tradition, they are more interesting."
Anyways, shit's old and free, give it a try. If you're terrified that the creator is a batshit tranny or something and you don't want to soil yourself by accidentally enjoying something with an artist you don't like behind it, give it a pass I guess.

I still think you're missing the point of the statement. He was saying that RPGs, RPGmaker or otherwise, were holding up the classic RPGs of the 90s up on a pedestal and were trying to emulate them instead of trying to be their own thing.
Either way it's just kind of a background element of the game, like I said I didin't really pick up on it at all when playing it.

Kane and Lynch 2: Dog Days sounds like your typical 7th gen cover shooter on paper, but the overall experience it presents is completely unlike anything else I've seen.
First, the Shanghai setting is absolutely dystopic, an endless cavalcade of dirty streets, cheap concrete, bare fluorescent lights, rain soaked tarps, soulless industrial zones and piled up trash. You never see the big neon displays, just what's behind them, and even when you're up among the skyscrapers all you find is smog. Then everything's covered in a layer of intense visual effects, deliberate censorship, video errors and even watermarks to make it look like something you'd see on liveleak. Plenty of games like Battlefield or Max Payne 3 would steal some of its visual influence and use it as a crutch, but in Dog Days it's such an sensory overload it they aren't even comparable. Certainly no game has tried this aesthetic statement since.
Gameplay wise, despite being a cover shooter it's fairly frantic, due to the inaccurate (and ugly) chinese guns and the low TTK. A lot of desperately trying to get a burst off on a running enemy, or rushing closer, so you have a better chance to hit. There's absolutely nothing in the way of fancy gimmicks or even variation, just stripped back gunfights, whilst civilians run around and get caught in the crossfire. In terms of plot, Kane and Lynch are two balding middle-aged sociopaths who make shoddy plans and back them up with pointless violence, which in turn beget more pointless violence until the game abruptly ends. Various traumas cause Lynch to regress into mental instability. The game never turns to give you a morality play about evil white men, or how crime doesn't pay, or how you're a monster for playing this. None of the characters ever acknowledge their rank inhumanity.
Combined together, it's all so deliberately overwhelming, and disorienting, and nihilistic and downright nauseating, it's hard to believe it ever got approved for an Triple-A budget. Did I mention the soundtrack is a stomach churning wall of dark ambient, industrial and harsh noise, only occasionally broken up by chinese pop? It's a complete abnormality in the modern gaming market, and if you can stomach it's intensity there's really nothing quite like it. It's also fairly short, which means it doesn't outstay its welcome, or leave you too exhausted to continue.

Maybe some of you are too young to remember how old nintendo cartridges would visually glitch the fuck out if they got dusty. That's why people would blow in them before hooking them up to the console. Space funeral was about characters in a glitched or "corrupted" game.
