What are the versions of each game that one should play and in what order? Preferably in japanese Been interested in this series for some time

That gives you a lot of options.

For Langrisser 1 play the PC remake from the late 90s. I think it's called Swords of the Dramatic War or something like that.

For Langrisser 2 both the original on the Sega Genesis and the remake, Der Langrisser, on the Super Nintendo are worth playing. The have the same characters and can have similar plots depending on which path you choose in Der Langrisser, but they're very different games overall.

I haven't played Langrisser 3, but I assume the PS2 version is better than the Saturn one.

Langrisser IV and V are best on the PS1 if you want something more balanced. If you want to break the game by abusing very broken units, then you might prefer the Saturn versions.

I'm only familiar with the PC version of Growlanser 1, so I'm not sure how it compares to the PS1 and PSP versions.

Growlanser 2, 3, 5, and 6 are only on PS2 as far as I know.

Growlanser IV(aka Wayfarer of Time) is best on the PSP because of the insane amount of new content they added for that remake.

Der Langrisser, the remake of 2 on the SNES, is the one you can do that in. IIRC, you can also do something similar in Langrisser 4 if you can get both princesses to fall in love with you by a certain point. And yes, both of those games have been translated.

How difficult is the Japanese?

I've only played Growlanser 4 but it's amazing how something as simple as making combat and exploration on the same screen can make the combat so much more exciting than other JRPGS that magically transport you to another dimension where you and the opponent take turns throwing cutscenes at eachother for battles.

I still have to catch up with the whole series. I have only played Warsong, the Saturn one (forgot the name) and Growlanser 2 for PS2.

I was pleasantly surprised when i choose to ally with the "evil" empire in the PS2 game, only to be taken away from the final battle and put into a new scenario where i started serving the empire, with new missions. I wish more RPGs did that.

Too bad that the localization was Working Designs' cancer.

This too. Apparently a lot of the original script of Growlanser 2 and 3 was really fucked with. And Atlus JP are very protective of the Growlanser and Langriser series. Similar to how Sega wont let anyone except Sega or a direct Sega affiliate work on the Phantasy Star series.
