The PS3 on the other hand was sold at a fantastic loss, so was the 360. When those came out they were arguably a bit ahead of most high-end PCs for a few months.
I don't think any of the current consoles are sold at a loss, which is an unusual situation for consoles and it shows in unspectacular hardware.
To bring it back to topic, Star Citizen is supposed to be a PC exclusive and what little of it there is to "play" runs incredibly badly. Unlike a "so bad it's good" movie, though, it's not worth the price of admission.

Day-1 collector's editions. Don't even play or open the game, just buy the Legendary Ultra Collector's Edition (game not included) for 400$ and keep it shrink-wrapped for twenty years. You'll thank me later, trust me.
But seriously, I once had a Collector's Edition of a game. The game was shit, but I got it for free in a contest, so I figured I would just keep it stashed for a couple of years to see if the value would stay at least constant or even go up. In the end I was glad I could get rid of that shit for even 10$. I should have sold it when the game was still new, I could have gotten three or four times the amount, which would still have been a loss if I had actually paid money for it.

The result of a CIG-organized jpeg design fan contest, this 250$ concept jpeg is unlikely to ever reach a playable state.
>Vulcan
A repair/refuel concept jpeg worth 200$ with no gameplay mechanics to speak of.
>Gladius
Generic light fighter jpeg worth 90$. Dev testbed and one of the oldest and most prominent in-game jpegs, it sees frequent use among the playerbase despite its somewhat lackluster armament.

Mainstay fighter jpeg worth 170$. The Sabre Raven variant of this jpeg was sold as a tie-in with an Intel SSD.

The game's only playable mining jpeg at $155. It actually has mining mechanics implemented!
>Razor
A $145 dollar dedicated formula one racing jpeg.

An $890 luxury yacht concept jpeg aimed at the rich and beautiful, with an affluent design+various amenities free of any homophobic tendencies. Carries an M85X.

Then I checked back on it and the company was selling 50,000$+ models and even insurance for your space ships and you have to shower and take shits in-game. Is this supposed to become some autistic life simulator where you have to do every real-life chore in the game as well? And what is the deal with insurance, don't tell me they plan to have permadeath on a virtual good that costs more than a real-life car. >what the fuck is it even supposed to be?
nobody really knows. every autistic whale who has pumped triple digits or more into this thinks that their own retarded personal idea of gameplay is going to be in. i ended up getting too exasperated with the cult-like mentality in the forums to keep reading, but there are people who genuinely think they are going to make money selling player characters that they have taken hostage for ransom, or people who think that they're going to be able to actively terraform planets. i think a conservative idea of what it's actually going to be is "a slightly bigger elite dangerous that costs way more to play"
>insurance
the insurance system that is in place right now entitles you to a free replacement of a stock version of your ship if it gets destroyed. insurance is going to be available for in-game credits. i think we're coming up on something big insurance-wise; they've painted themselves into a corner on the idea of insurance and they need to shit or get off the pot. is your multi-hundred or -thousand dollar ship going to disappear when {420}xXxBoNgLaSeRxXx rams you or not? I can already see the lawsuits and i have a hunch that the system they'll end up settling on will be "if you bought a ship for real money it permanently has insurance, if you bought it for in-game credits you will have to buy insurance"
>shower and take shits
not going to be a thing, and if it is i think it'll be one of those things you can do if you're bored or are in FTL travel or something. they've stated a couple of times that this isn't going to be a survival game, you won't need to eat or sleep or anything like that
i don't want you to misunderstand me here, i think they have already failed at delivering the product they initially proposed and i think it's going to end up being a pretty bad game even when it's all said and done, but hate it for the right reasons

I mean just in terms of in-game logic atmospheric flight should be preserved for special use and smaller ships as anything else would just not make sense due to the high energy requirement of keeping the titanic afloat close to a planet. Not to mention that this means that every ship has to be aerodynamic, which once again does not make sense for gigantic ships.
Does this man even understand basic imaginary future physics ?
I mean seriously, even today cruise ships often dont dock themselves, but instead transport passengers via smaller ferries.
Sure, its all play pretend, but common sense applies even in fiction. Even more so in a larp-heavy game like this.

Nah, it's still in development but it's been real rocky. IIRC, they had a separate team making it, but the development went poorly. So, they ended up bringing it back to Chris Roberts.

That was the FPS module, this one they had on schedule for a 2016 release, which then Chris had scrapped because he figured they could make it better. Now they started redoing it all over. I don't think a 2020 release is realistic at all, maybe as part 1 out of 5+.

There's a lot of contradictory information out there. Apparently, 2020 was initially slated as a full release of SQ42. Now, you can find articles saying that it will be a beta with the release of new content in an episodic manner.
>Chris had scrapped because he figured they could make it better. Now they started redoing it all over
If leaks are to be believed, this is not exclusive to the FPS module. Roberts has been rumored to modify otherwise finished work. There are also facts to support this, as some ships have been made unavailable due to being remodeled after their first release.

>Nuke Dukem Forever did come out eventually, right? I think they literally have a legal obligation to do so, at some point
It's really uncanny how similar Duke Nukem Forever and Star Citizen are. Both are run by egomaniacs who want to make the bestest game of all time and who just don't know when to stop. DNF had to be restarted time and time again because every time the technology became outdated. Every time another game did something, DNF had to have that as well. Eventually the investors had to step in and take development away by force. Another company was then given the ungrateful task to wrap it up and push it out of the door one way or another.
If Star Citizen ever comes out that's how I envision it to happen. Roberts will be forcefully removed from the project and someone else will be set up to wrap up the loose ends and release what's there.
I don't believe that Robers is a scammer. I believe he is a giant manchild who has zero emotional control and just doesn't know when to draw a line. The man went broke several times and his passion were always movies. Star Citizen and even his earlier games were just him LARPing as a movie director in a medium that is more tolerant of shit writing. Let's be honest, the story of Wing Command would never win an award, the reason people loved it was because 1) no game had ever done something, and 2) because it was there to enrich a fun game.

I don't get it, there are so many much more fun hobbies than pretending to fly a space ship when you're all lonely in your home. If I had more money than I could spend I would buy a cool sports car, a motor cycle, or do cool sports like fencing. If I wanted to be really nerdy I could start buying authentic arcade machines or something like that, at least then I would have something that I actually own then.
Playing with play-pretend space ships should be something poor people do because it requires no material investment, only a computer and time to unlock content. This really is clown-world.

No fear citizen, they've started selling tugboat ships with industral sized tractor beams for the sole purpose of dragging those large ships off of planets. All for the low low price of $150! Buy now because Cig will increase it to $175 two years from now when they finally add it to the game, and to $200 when they actually add the first iteration tractor beam mechanics to the game sometime in 2024.

the problem is they made the mistake of selling giant cargo barge ships that hold *4 to 8 times* what similarly sized conventional cargo ships carry. And this massive cargo difference was suppose to be entirely balanced around the idea that the barges can't land on planets while normal cargo ships can. So they have to have those regular big ass ships able to land in atmosphere now or else there is literally no reason for them to exist in the same game where there's a flying space barge that holds 5 times as much.

They've already gone full kike so they may as well demand that you have to have a large crew on the barge in order to operate it and have the regular large ships be pilotable by a single player.
But that solution is probably too sensible and not in line with Roberts' line of thinking like >>16497976 explained.

They do have space stations, but none of the xbox hueg jpegs with external cargo racks are ingame and probably never will be so the gameplay mechanics revolving around the handling of their cargo are also missing.
In Chris' game mechanic fanfics it was said that operators of Hulls and similarly large jpegs could have local station Argos unload the cargo boxes in exchange for a fee or do it themselves which would of course take ages because immersion.
That same document also said that cargo purchased through regular means at a Starport would have to be loaded and unloaded in a hyper-realistic fashion on all ships with cargo bays, however this feature was mysteriously dropped in 3.0 so buying/selling cargo just spawns and despawns nondescript boxes inside the jpeg.
