I can explain the megadrive thing. it was probably the first console to have legitimate support in south america. NES and SNES didn't launch legit there afaik. also pirated games were readily available for megadrive (and other consoles).
As for today's knock-offs, they tend to work worse than original hardware (stutters, slowdowns) according to Sega Retro, but I'd bet they're still miles better than any nostalgia cashgrab "mini" meme console. Only question is who the fuck would be stupid enough to buy a knock-off of a defunct system whose games have long gone out of print.

and they are still making cartridges for the knockoffs, i don't know if they are trully shit though, i got one for a few bucks in Argentina and it works just fine, you can play all Mortal Kombat, Gunstar Heroes, Contra Hard Corps, all Sonic games, all Bare Knuckles, Comix Zone, Disney games, Road Rash, and quite a few more without any problems
there are even cartridges with more than 40 games in and most of them work fine
the joistics are shit though, the directional cross was the first thing to break

Well, there's more to that. BR has insane import tariffs, so Tec Toy (the BR Sega partners) built the system right in Manaus to save costs. TT offered support, repairs, a help line, gaming magazines and even a 'Sega club' for players to join. They were HUGE back then, and the Master System is basically eternal in BRland. Some other things they did include translating RPGs (Phantasy Star), reskinning games with new characters (Wonder Boy -> Turma da Mônica for example), and even making a few original TT games of their own.

You can find clone systems as well, but Tec Toy keeps making official licensed systems - the latest one is a full sized Genesis with a "Red Kid" updateable Genesis-on-a-chip, notable because it has a functional cart slot. They even made a re-release of the Mônica Genesis game, with box and manual, everything. Nintendo eventually got a local company to represent the SNES, but by that time Tec Toy was pretty much the king in the region.
