This trilogy was so fucking mismanaged. Zero Gravity had some neat ideas but the execution fell flat just about everywhere. If handled right and not ending on a Kinect-exclusive, this could've had some real potential. Maybe even being capable of rivaling Mario Kart.

It wasn't even the first time SEGA fucked up trying to jump on a new motion controls bandwagon. They split the '06 team up so make Secret Rings, which led to '06 getting fucked hard in dev, while Secret Rings was awful just because of the motion controls.

I think the biggest sin of the first game (haven't played the others, but repeatedly return to the first) is that it doesn't really tell you how to do a lot of it's tricks or mechanics. To get true extreme air, you gotta charge a jump, and then right before charging the jump slows you down you have to boost, then let go just as you hit a ramp. It's kinda wonky, especially figuring out the spacing (can't start too early or too late), but satisfying to pull off. Other things like timing inputs for grinding, why levelling through ring collection is important, and generally how to conserve air are not well explained at all. I can appreciate a game that doesn't hold your hand to figure out how it works, but I feel like the basics aren't covered and is a likely reason people never got into it.

To be honest Sonic Riders is the only good game in that trilogy.

Zero Gravity's gimmick shat on every thing the previous game had that was fun and I wouldn't touch a kinect game with a lightyear long pole.

What am I missing with Sonic? I like the gameplay but it has the same issue as a lot of GBA games where the screen feels like it's zoomed in too much to the point that it's difficult to react through levels.

Second one has some strong merits. But it's so different you're better off just assuming it's a completely different game. It has its own objective flaws. In many people's opinion it makes many problems from the original worse by having a more intrusive gimmick. Trading off any and all other unique additions for this new feature.

The Zero Gravity does fucking nothing to fix the originals flaws. It just throws itself at a new gimmick that's so all consuming it takes everything else that was neat about the original with it. So if you want to have a good time. Try not to compare it to the original. It'll only make you bitter why the few things Zero Gravity does right is not on the original and to a more extreme extent why anything from the original wasn't improved on or included at all.

TL;DR - "It's different" is the nicest thing I can say about it.

It was both, those two reasons don't contradict each other. Being forced to ship it out on new hardware they had no experience with on a degline that eschewed proper QA testing was the final nail in that coffin as well. They even missed the 2006 deadline for the PS3 version which was delayed to Jan 2007 with cut dlc, leaving only the Super Hard Mode available (unlike the X360 version which got that and additional boss and team attack amigo dlc) because it flat out didn't work at all on Sony's consolw until then.

I always hated the stupid spin the analog stick sequences (the stream in the jungle level). getting the max speed possible there was a bitch. Also fuck the announcer ("X is losing momentum" constantly).

The mechanics in Zero Gravity were dumbed down too, the timing to get an SS on a ramp is extremely easy compared to the original.

Also using the gravity mechanic is actually detrimental because the alternate paths are slower than just not taking them.
