Video games are an interesting medium. They don't need a good story in order to be entertaining. Just fun interactive objectives and well-polished controls. I mean, it's not like Sonic platformers are storytelling masterpieces. Sonic's plot in a nutshell: (hedgehog runs fast. hedgehog fights fat roboticist.)

This is different from movies and other linear mediums. They absolutely need good storytelling in order to be entertaining. So when a game IP makes the jump to movies, directors usually have to turn a game's weak storytelling into a good 2 hour flick somehow. That's like trying make a steak out of thin slice of ham.

The issue is that in times past video game adaptations were never handled by good writers, so the narrative was always lackluster. Nowadays, Hollywood has no good writers left, so everything they make is shit by default.

A good writer can take pretty much any idea and make a compelling story out of it. This travesty of a movie made the first mistake in trying to turn Sonic into live-action, and secondly by trying to age up the story, which obviously can't work since it's about a blue hedgehog that goes very fast.

I can't explain it very well in text, but it's because they are such different forms of entertainment. One requires you to get from A to B- destination to destination- whereas the other is about character development, the story and the obstacles the character must face through the story. When a movie tries to emulate a videogame and tries to make it "true to the game" they have to get through these destinations and check off all the videogame references. It's like "We did this area, now we must show off this area, and now it's time for this area" and the character just goes along with it.

John Wick was a blast because of the Jackie Chan style of cinematography which walked you through the setpieces. Most games aren't really supposed to be movies. Stories are frameworks to facilitate play, not to be enticing yarns when told in a vacuum. In the cases where a game's story could be adapted well to a movie, you also have to deal with the Hollywood machine that likes to make a very specific type of product for mass market appeal, and will likely want to eject any of the more intellectually challenging, or characteristic distinctiveness from the plot. Thus Agent 47, the cold emotionless clone killer becomes just another action hero.

Sonic Mania is a new game, not a remaster. It uses a couple old level themes, but with new layouts. Also a lot of new level themes. N. Sane Trilogy is literally a remaster.

Anyway, early 3D Sonic is basically Crash Bandicoot but he goes a bit faster. Sonic Adventure 2 is closest to this formula and IMO the best 3D Sonic. Adventure 1 is good if you want actual Adventure game elements, but since they weren't in the original games, I assume you don't care about those.

I've though about it, and I've come to the conclusion a good Hitman film shouldn't focus on 47, or, at least, the general portrayal of 47. Introduce him and his mission at the beginning, and then focus on the location and characters he'll be interacting with. It'd be tricky. I could see something akin to the games, but perhaps something similar to that show Psych where when he examines a room, you see a sharp detail zoom in on an object or person he intends to use and it's up to the viewer to piece together what he's going to do before he does it.

1. Audience interaction with videogames—particularly classics from the 80s and 90s—is based chiefly around gameplay, i.e., satisfying feedback when the player succeeds at a dynamic task. On the other hand, audience interaction with film and other "traditional" forms of entertainment is based around the viewer empathising with the success of a character on screen which is tied to a script (a chapter in a film can never fail to complete, for instance). Therefore the link between the object and observer in the two mediums is radically different.

2. The big-wig executives to decide to make films based on iconic videogames have little interest in anything else but money. This is the same reason why the Star Wars films have stayed so confined to pretty much one storyline (Skywalker, Death Star, Empire, Rebellion): because that's what people are familiar with. It's a simply formula: don't surprise people too much; give them just enough novelty to keep the dopamine flowing, and the money will flow with it. Pixels was a classic case of this kind of approach to videogames in film—it's shit because that's exactly what normalcattle eat.

3. The stories of the 80s-90s games are barebones because of point 1., which means more often than not that the writer(s) have two choices: Firstly, build a simple arc which is really just an adaptation of the game (this is what the Sonic film is—Sonic good, Robotnik bad, Sonic beats Robotnik); or, Secondly, dive into the lore, which takes time—and time equals money. Smaller projects like the Star Wars extended universe are great for this since they aren't as big an investment, but a major Summer movie isn't worth the gamble of handing the story to nerds; you want industry yes-men, not literature graduates.
