The source code to previously dead game City of Heroes was leaked by an anonymous disgruntled dev back when it first shut down. Unfortunately, it was only leaked to the mod of the game's Subleddit, an Argie named Leandro. Rather than share it with anyone else, he created a group called SCoRE (Secret Cabal of Reverse Engineers) and horded it for six years, forcing anyone they let in to secrecy lest they get banned while he and his leddit butt-budies ran gay ops and discrediting campaigns on anyone who believed the game could be saved.
One of the players on the cabal server eventually broke the story, and the community has been up in arms about it. After being doxxed, Leandro caved and gave up the code. Unfortunately, he only gave up the crappy slapdash-edited code with his fanfic expansion i25 rather than i24 the last officially released version of the game. He's currently trying to keep power by faking repentance (while simultaneously asking for donations); after it came out that the PR guy of the first Discord was a futa clangfag from halfchan, a bunch of triggered trannies from the subreddit are trying to establish an """""official""""" server full of cucked shit like having to choose a pronoun role on their Discord or being banned and not being able to use the word "Fist" in your character name. Both groups are trying to consolidate power to their respective servers (Homecoming, Torchbearer, and Excelsior) via disinfo.
However, from my understanding (since I don't touch Discord with a 10 foot pole) a good deal of coders (about 70 in all), united under the banner of half/vg/ fag Dr. Brain, have decided to separate from Reddit and Leandro to make their own group dedicated to making i24 open sourced and available to anyone; they even have a small temporary server running. Unfortunate, as noted in pic 3, Leandro and his butt-buddies Cipher and TonyV (the ones behind Homecoming) turned out to be withholding MORE important files, specifically the ones that allow people to run a server with more than a small population with any reliability (likely a measure to curry good favor by pretending to be on the community's side by giving up the code, but keep it incomplete enough to prevent competitors like the coders or Reddit's Torchbearer from challenging Homecoming), and naturally everyone's pissed.

City of heroes is not a fun game and it's lasting power is the novel idea of playing superheroes, the customization is shallow and leaves a lot to be desired as a lot of the designs are too symmetrical which makes creating actually unique characters harder to implement, you could argue that powers are all balanced but that's because some of them are actual copies of each other, see fire and ice and actual powercreeping: regeneration && willpower and tons of X armor with filler powers too like taunt or a 'powerup' move, stats are only moved around and melee being the most restrictive compared to having pets, healing, crowd control when picking ranged-type classes. It still has the ancient tab targeting system that a lot of MMOs use, it is terrible and the alternatives are anything really, despite the game being an MMO it's best played solo or in small groups, eitherwise it becomes too much of a slog to coordinate multiple people, hence the teleport power existing

Things could be MUCH worse. Lucky for us, at the beginning of this shitfest we had enough capable people ignoring Leandro's false promises, who instead stayed focused on getting shit done for i24. They've made real progress; i24 can be compiled and played for private-scale use, and implementing support for large groups of public players is at worst a tedious problem, not a hard or impossible one. Eh, I'm at a bit of a loss to explain it myself. Champions Online can do everything this game does, and better. Yet here we are. This game is a part of gaming history, this is the little niche after Everquest but before World of Warcraft. It has the improved controls and UI of Warcraft but the quest style and depth of Everquest. And like Everquest it has a fluid faction system where a player can "go rogue" and change their faction back and forth.
Hell when the game first came out there WAS ONLY HEROES, City of Villains wasn't a thing until a year after Heroes came out. As I said, this is simply a part of gaming history, and some of us have nostalgic memories of this game from a bygone age.
I first played it back in 2004 with friends I no longer have contact with, we played it at some internet cafe that had just opened up. That internet cafe is gone now, but because I played it with my friends I bought City of Villains when it came out. Then I later purchased a copy of Heroes as well. And I didn't play much of it, but I should have.

They hired a ponyfag from their forums to "fix" their character creator/costume tailor system back in 2014. Since then the only costume packs that have been released outside of lockboxes have been nothing but furshit and meme garbage. The stuff you get from lockboxes are just already existing pieces with new "textures" added to them.
You still can't color your powers black, white or gray. Some powers do have black variants now but either in device form, so they take up a device slot to use, or from unlocking via an item you get from lockboxes.
Auras are individual purchases, as are slots for them.
Costume change emotes that were a free thing in CoX for years didn't become a thing in Champions until the last couple of years, and you have to purchase those and the slots for them individually.
"Ultimate Powers" are high-tier powers you have to either get from lockboxes or buy off of other players who got them from lockboxes. Many are the exact same thing but colored differently or have different kinds of sparkles.
Nemesis has been broken and untouched since the game launched, some people still have never been able to proc the mission drop to have their final encounter with their Nemesis. Many powersets and costume pieces still aren't available for your Nemesis even if you've unlocked them on your account.
That game's a fucking mess and getting bought by Perfect World did it no favors. Even before Atari dropped their asses, Cryptic was pulling shady bullshit on their players. Like trying to make their endgame zone a paid expansion area only four months after the game launched, and then firing the Community Manager after he ruined their plans to jew everyone.

Changing compatibility settings, running it as admin and giving it firewall exception did nothing, either. I can hear login screen music, but the screen stays black. Probably. I don't build my builds around travel powers, I only knew that teleport was good fun when I had it and I think it would have a lot of use in PVP and PVE situations, mainly if you're glass cannon/ambush and you need to create distance extra quick.

fugg what client do I need to use in order to connect to the private serb? I tried to use the i24 CoH tequilla binary files and it dindu worked, I don't have this score.exe either only a icon.exe, cityofheroes.exe and a couple others. It's the same goddamn cooldown clicker "game" like any WoW killer that came after it, except it's also filled with retarded shit that even WoW didn't dare implement, like locking you out of quests and reducing drop rates to 0 if your level is too high, because only gooks are subhuman enough to allow something like that. This shit is beyond theme park, you are forced to only be where the devs tell you to be, otherwise you gain nothing from playing the game except maybe a rare badge if you know what you are doing.
It doesn't have the same coat of paint as WoW, but some of the very first enemies that you fight are demons, zombies and trolls anyway. (Italian mafia and ninjas are very rare enemies that you may find in the second area if you look for them hard enough)

Customization.
YOU get to choose how your character looks, not the designers of the latest end game gear. You can even have multiple costumes and play little animations whenever you swap between them. You get to decide which powers you take and (if applicable) what color the animations are. Some powers even have multiple animations for additional customization.
Although, if you have the same powerset as someone else, you will certainly act very similarly, but there is still what you put into the slots of your abilities. So someone who pushes more towards accuracy and endurance reduction will be different to someone who pushes more towards damage and recharge time.

There is. Both groups have different zones and cannot party with one another. If you head to King's Row, go into Pocket D, and talk to the seagull on the truck in the villain side of the club, you can change yourself to a villain.
Other than that, no. Heroes and villains are essentially the same now, outside of their respective zones and team alignments.

You fundamentally misunderstand how the game functions if you're going to compare CoH's cooldown combat with WoW's DDR rotations. CoH has very few animation cancels and those animation times, activation requirements and cooldowns affect how you approach every combat situation. More than that, every ability you get has a slightly different function, be it CC, Debuffs, or Alpha Strikes. Which can mean the difference between a trip to the hospital and victory, let alone the actual inherent advantages and disadvantages you get per set against certain enemy types. Unlike WoW, elemental damage and minor debuffs to accuracy or stamina regeneration actually do matter.

This game came out before World of Warcraft, it was never meant to be a "WoW Killer" because it wasn't designed to compete with WoW (different fucking settings you nog), and they had no idea how WoW would look/feel/handle because prior to WoW's release WoW looked like it was going to go realistic, and prior to City of Heroes the most successful MMO was Everquest.
They made a solid superhero MMO, which up until that time had not been done. Yeah there's several superhero MMOs now, but City of Heroes was the first. Being set in a modern world, it was also the first MMO that wasn't trying to be swords and sorcery other than Anarchy Online (which was set so futuristic that it's not worth comparing).

There is minimal penalty for getting defeated. You don't lose levels or XP. You get an XP debt, but it doesn't stop you from earning XP, it just makes you earn it at half speed until the debt is paid off. But it is unforgiving of bad builds. It's hard to make a bad character, chances are you will make a completely competent one just by picking what looks good. But if you really try, you can make one that is completely worthless. So, don't troll yourself by seeing if you can be stupid, because the game will allow it.
