First let's establish that cultural eras are not linked directly to actual dates, but to events. Many would say "the 20th century" did not truly begin until WWI.
>20s began with the end of WWI.
>30s began with the depression
>40s began with the start of WWII
>50s began with the end of WWII
>60s began with the assassination of JFK
>Hippies give different dates for when "the '60s ended," but some time shortly after Woodstock. Definitely by the time Watergate broke
>'80s began with the elections of Regan/Thatcher/other neo-cons
>'90s began with the fall of the Berlin Wall
>2000s began with 9/11
>2010s began with the cultural collapse of 2007. In the future, (((they))) will probably say it began with Obama's election in November 2008, but we all know that 2007 was the year everything fell apart.

Vice City and Vice City Stories. Liberty City Stories even does a late '90s setting despite being less than a decade later. But then San Andreas was barely a decade after its setting.
>>16389338
This. Tony Hawk is always the example I think of as the most of-its-time series. But I suppose that's mostly early 2000s. Though the first one gets the late' 90s with all that ska. 2 was technically 2000 and 3 was 2001, but I'm counting those as '90s. The '90s lasted from the fall of the Berlin Wall until 9/11.
>>16390113
It's an exaggeration of a style popular with a couple creators and products, like Michael Mann and his most popular product, Miami Vice. But it's a strong exaggeration, and Michael Mann didn't direct the entire decade.

>Grand Theft Auto 1, 1997.
GTA2 takes place just barely in the future, so still '90s as well, if we're counting that. But then you might as well count every game that takes place in the present.
>>16389517
The '80s nostalgia shit has lasted way too long. Since the early-mid 2000s. The '70s had lots of nostalgia for the '50s, the late '80s got to '60s nostalgia, and by the late '90s we were into '70s nostalgia, but that didn't last a full decade, and then the '80s shit is still huge. There's been some early '90s crossover nostalgia going on, but the early '90s were largely an extension of the '80s. We're not even at grunge nostalgia yet. I'm waiting for the futuristic late '90s look to come back.
>>16389977
To be fair, Married With Children was controversial at the time. But Fox reveled in being "the edgy network." They saw that it paid off, and learned to tell the '90s equivalent of SJWs to fuck themselves. Even by the late '90s, with the massive success of many of their shows, including The Simpsons, they were still kind of running with that mindset. But I think it was American Idol and its massive success with nothing resembling edginess or darkness (like say, The X-Files) that caused them to become just like all the other networks, ruining everything.

When would you argue the cultural era of "the 20th century" began? You're allowed to disagree over any of the events I listed. They're kind of vague markers for large cultural shifts. For example, the '90s being the era between the Cold War and The War on Terror. It's a distinct era, and you could call it whatever you want, but it happens to line up pretty well with the decade of "the '90s," so it's useful shorthand.

Well exactly. The early '90s were still carrying over culture from the '80s. Once the era got going, it was a time of unbridled prosperity and optimism. The '80s gets credit for this, but the '90s were "the end of history." We won the cold war, and we weren't yet reminded that a significant portion of the world was still literally cavemen, only stealing our modern technology and determined to use it against us. We were entering a new millennium, and it was like we were on the edge of tomorrow, about to step into the future. The colorful look of media in the latter half of the decade. The fact that sci-fi was still optimistic mostly. Tech was rapidly advancing and we still believed we might get flying cars soon.
9/11 killed that optimism and brought us into a new, shitty era. Of course how little we realized that things could get even worse.

Which is also stupid because home computers were not nearly as popular back then as today, or even as popular as they were in the '90s, obviously. Especially for vidya, the amount of significance attributed to things that would have displayed these kind of graphics is vastly overstated today. If you wanted to play video games in the '80s, you were playing Nintendo. You might have the one kid at school who had a Master System, and would get made fun of because he never had any of the good games, but NES was what a real video game was.
Europoors get butthurt because fucked distribution in their region means they didn't get the only real player in that entire video game generation. It doesn't change the fact that it was the only real platform that mattered.

actually neon and those colors were everywhere if you don't remember, i actually had that ski jacket on the bottom …
but you're right, most of our shit was pretty ghetto,it's when a lot of our products first started to be cheaply made and mass produced, our concept of what the future would be was infantile…
as for the fitness craze that was a two fold issue, life had changed in America quite a bit in the proceeding decades, the 1950's produced the prototypical American lifestyle as opposed to the hard life people had to live in the 20's-30's-40's, by the time the late 1960's and 70's rolled around America was getting fat due to our lifestyle of convenience, as that was rolling along so was medical science and our understanding of health, i wasn't born until the mid-late70's but it was around that time when aerobics had been discovered or at least rather pushed into the mainstream….
I don't know if you guys remember PSA's, oh god how loved PSA's, they were always so terrible they were amazing, anyways, there was a bunch of PSA's on staying fit and making fun of fat people and it used to be shameful to be fat so yeah, people got off their asses and bought a bunch of highly flammable workout gear and got even fatter…lol, but yeah the fashion of the 80's was some of my favorite even thought the quality/materials of the clothes being made then was mostly shit, don't get me wrong, cotton good were far superior to what we have now, things like denim and t shirts were all well made…well at least by today's standards, but most other things were just absolute shit…
don't even get me started on the 90's and how tech never fucking worked, in the 80's things weren't really advanced enough and people weren't heavily relying on tech in their day to days lives but by the time the 90's rolled around computers had entered the mainstream, cell phones had become small enough and affordable enough to actually own and be useful….problem was the tech that ran all of this stuff was still so new nothing actually worked, there were compatibility issues that made almost every single device be a nightmare to install or get working the way it was intended, i don't know man, i just remember always being so pissed off and yelling at my tech because something was always going on with it and i spent more time keep things up and running than anything else…..one thing i do really miss and i've said this before, is i miss dialup, not the speeds but the way the "internet" was structured back then, during the bbs era it was fucking great, all of these little communities that you could only gain access to by word of mouth or having an in, all of the people in the scene were legit, normalfag faggots hadn't shown up to shit all over everything and even if they wanted to they couldn't as they'd have to get the phone number for the board in the first place and you didn't get the numbers for the really cool boards without knowing someone…it was really cool being there at the start of a lot of the major warez groups…too bad a lot of those guys have gone to federal prison now, thanks for keeping my name out of it guys, lol…anyways the internet used to be cool.
the biggest loss is not even something that you can quantify though, when 9/11 happened it was the end of a way of life for Americans, America, our mentality and the way we are changed as a result of that event, it changed so much that it would be hard for someone who wasn't there to even envision what life was like, no surveillance state, no real concern over domestic terrorism, yeah we had the unibomber and mcveigh, but there was no DHS or any of these other groups that were created to deal with these sort of things, the police officers were still police officers, they weren't hardened combat vets wearing a blue uniform, they weren't trained to think that everyone is out to kill them…..again, i don't know how to explain it, it is hard to quantify a way of doing things or a mentality change, the whole countries mentality changed after 9/11 across the board…what 9/11 did to this country was far worse than the 3-4k dead and we did it to ourselves….the government also learned that people will gladly trade their rights away for safety so we got more of the same.
meh, i'm done, i just feel so sorry for you younger guys who never got to know the good America.

Not just America, but the west in general. The '90s were an optimistic time, despite the grunge fad in the middle of the decade. We won the Cold War. Right here, right then, we were watching the world wake up from history. Freedom won and technology was advancing and we were about to enter a whole new millennium. We reached the end of history, and were about to step into a utopic, Jetsons-like future. Little did we realize that we were just in our brief halcyon days. But after only a decade, cavemen who stole our technology but were still thoroughly dedicated to caveman culture ramped up their attacks enough to remind actual homo sapiens that our battles weren't really over. And of course, as you mentioned, other players who were ostensibly on our side used this effect to further degrade our society from within.

I don't view it as positively as you do. The 90s were basically the beginning of the kike post-game. With the dissolution of the Soviet Union, they had complete control of the only remaining world superpower.
They just needed some sort of new pearl Harbor in order to use it's power to it's full extent. That was what 9/11 was about.
Islamic terrorism was non-existent in the west before (((America))) started fucking up Muslim countries for Israel, after all.

Everything you say is also true. What I was describing was just the attitude of the time. Of course as we learned, that attitude was not based on objective reality.
Also, /pol/ told me the Soviet Union was also run by jews. Communism is jews, but jews run all the major corporations under capitalism. If anything it's some Star Wars shit where the emperor was actually controlling both sides to start false flag wars and increase his own power. Which is exactly what happened after 9/11.

I miss these kinds of settings. You can't have them anymore either because the games are loaded with poz ("look how bad decade X was for wheelchair bound brown transsexual communists!") or it's tired neo-80s bullshit instead of something straightforward.
I particularly value period video games, particularly open world ones because it's like a virtual time machine. I mean, I have a whole library of TV shows and movies from those eras but video games are another matter, exploring a realistic recreation of a bygone era is pretty charming.

That's going to go really badly for them. The heart wants what it wants and furthermore the genitals want what they want. Trying to push so hard against it will only a massive rebellion of one sort or another.

A lot of the the Star Wars Expanded Universe actually avoids introducing tech that was invented or popularized after the 1980. Thus there are no cell-phones (though ultra portable two-way radios are universal), video games that aren't simulators, or red dot sights and the holonet is comparable to very early internet (some news sites and primitive, text-only, BBS/IRC). This never really comes up in the video games though.

Gex fucked up and used Carpenter Brut. What actually happened was his (((license holders))) made a call. Put it this way, dude's live set has videos clipped out of shit like Horror Rock 1984 and Roller Mobster had some Italian thriller flick involving some mugger dragging a chick around with a chain while he drove his moped to escape, girls get bisected with chainsaws and the attitude that "the band" has now seems to still ring through with a focus on sex, drugs and rock and roll which is definitely too offensive for mainstream.
Perturbator's mention was that faggot fucking commie trans ally kid had a Perturbator wall photo on FB and that's it. Also, fucking hates SF because his shit got stolen out of his car during a tour.
In general, any synthwave artist who comes to sf gets a harsh dose of reality. You just can't speak out about because otherwise you're nearly immediately blacklisted from any venue that actually knows who you are. You're either some underground youtube Cybernazi synthwaver, a faggot who plays ball for (((them))) or you stay out of it as best as you can.

well, the world needs some of that optimism back. theres a bit of reason to be optimistic. they still must make neighbors fight eachother. that means the power the merchants of discord wield is still something that is "given".
how do you make people unwilling to hurt eachother? its difficult when theyre constantly being sold reasons to fear.
