What are the best skateboarding games?

Played through Tony Hawk's Pro Skater 1-4 and Underground 1-2, now I'm going to try Skate 2 because it looks like something more linear-based and the controls are less arcade. Not going to try Skate 3 because it doesn't seem to have a good singleplayer like 2.

What are the best skate games you played? Tony Hawk and Skate are the only one I got. There is a lot of Tony Hawk's clones but they don't look too good.

skate 3 has hardcore mode which is extremely fucking fun imo. makes you feel like youre actually doing rails/handrails sans crushed balls when you fuck up. you have to actually line up for it and pop at a reasonable time. if you skate irl or simply enjoy a more realistic vibe, youll have a very good time with this. if youre one of those gen-z adderall casualties that insists on playing it like a tony hawk game (((tricklining))), then stop reading here as most of the rest of this post doesnt apply to you

i liked 2 better for its single player, like you said, but after spending time playing hardcore mode on 3 its hard to go back to imo.

plus, with skate 3s park editor, and a little thing called the "merge glitch", as well as a heaping mound of autism, you can make some absolutely fantastic looking parks for yourself.

additionally, i believe (((EA))) recently re-opened the skate 3 online serbs to try to sell moar DLC no doubt, and even on last gen systems, it seems that theres still somewhat of a community left PS3 was what i saw being played by a friend. cant speak to quality as ive only seen it played. EA b& me from their servers for some horseshit that i dont remember so i cant play ;_;. but the serbs being online again means that you can download community made parks, and theres an awful lot of really nice ones out there. be warned, some require DLC tho, and i cannot with a clean conscience recommend giving EA money for any reason ever.

i just re-bought the game for like $3 in some bargain bin this winter to tie me over till shit thaws irl. if you havent played it, and can find a used copy so EA doesnt get any shekels i would strongly recommend it or emulate it like anon said. 3 gets a lot of flack for its (generally accepted) shittier levels, more retarded story, and shittier campaign. but since i play these games as a kind of skate-suboxone for when its too cold where i live, the addition of hardcore mode more than makes up for it for me.

as for games other than skate series and the tony hawk series, all are shit. tony hawks is for the arcade-y player, and skate is the favorite of most who enjoy irl skating though its by no means a pre-requisite. apparently there is two new games out for nu-consolefaggots called "skater XL" and "session". i stay behind a generation on consoles and pirate PC games out of principal so i cant tell you even the slightest detail on either of these, but videos are available if you can tolerate gen-z letsplayers talking too fast over them.

heres a low quality embed of jason lees video daze part because fuck you

its funny to see these games skate series even get brought up here. no doubt partly because theyre EA games. considering who was publishing them, they had no right being as good as they were. something of an anomaly. no doubt thats why EA shitcanned the series. cant be going and making good games. what would the investors think?

to add to this, heres an example of a community park you can download, as well as an example of what can be done in the park editor. this particular park in the vid uses merge glitch (allows one to countersink various pieces into one anotherfor detailing or to create custom ramps/trannys). its a great example of what can be done with a little time and some autism.

the editor itself is a bit wonky, but once you get used to it, its quite gratifying to be able to create whatever park or line you can imagine, then immediately be able to skate it. not for everyone i suppose, but with hardcore mode, and the park editor, skate 3 remains as one of the only reasons ill turn on my PS3 nowadays. the replayability ive gotten out of this game is insane

I've seen Skate 3's online community, and it looks alive in the 360. Not going to play online so far as I don't connect to Xbox Live (and I don't want to pay Gold). Skate 3 seemed too much online focused for me, but you mentioned the hardcore mode, so I'm going to pick it too.

yea the main problem with skate 3 online is the cancer that is (((tricklining))). theres hardcore-only serbs i believe, but even then, people have gone out of their way to learn how to do all kinds of crazy trickline bullshit and it totally ruins any sense of competition which isnt why i skate irl nor play skate vidya anyways, but i digress for me when you got some faggot next to you doing flatground no-comply backflip rocket airs to nose manual into a tranny, then pulling a 360 hardflip mctwist, landing back in a nose manual and no comply front-flipping out

for an example of this cancer, and why the skate 3 online community initially died prior to it being literally killed by EA pulling the plug, see embed related. this spic, and his army of underageb&s screaming into their mics, are the progenitors of this cancer. youll notice how rapidly they talk, while simultaneously saying absolutely nothing of value, which is a side-effect of being raised on prescription strength amphetamine salts from age 3 onward.

many people still play and create parks for "realistic" play being the name given to differentiate the actual way to play the game from the arcade-y bullshit that is tricklining, so if youre able to access the EA servers, there will still be a shitton of custom levels for you to skate.

and besides, while it may be an unpopular opinion, i think the main map of skate 3 is quite good on its own. even after playing it to death, i still manage to find new lines to come up with and spots to skate. this is accentuated by the fact that you can drop in moveable kickers/ramps/rails anywhere on the main map.

if you can find a used copy most game stores ive been to have all of them for single-digit price due to so many multiples of copies its definitely worth picking up.

>>16384554

im surprised theres not more skateboarding games coming out. theres very obviously a huge demand for it. even recent vids as in this year of kids putting up skate 3 vids are garnering multiple millions of views in some cases. this is a very old game to be seeing such an active community still, and on dead systems no less.

>>16384574

>They updated the graphics on xbonex (that's why the servers are still up) to 4k/60fps but its not worth it to me to upgrade from my 360 that it plays perfectly fine on

the graphics never bothered me anyways. plus, on PS, not only would i have to buy a PS4 not happening, but in order to play online i would have to pay for PS plus, which is total cancer. and theres still the chance that i would be b& from EAs serbs, as i am now for whatever reason

its certainly not easy. you could spend your whole life learning and still be only mediocre. but the basics are easy enough where if you have a little balance and physical coordination you can easily learn all of the basics in a matter of months.

as for fun, its hands down the most fun activity ive ever done irl. many of my longest and best irl friends are the kids i grew up skating with like a decade ago. sure, youll meet a lot of degenerates too these are normally the kids getting high under the ramp, and (normally) they cant skate for shit, but theres nothing better than tearing up some spot downtown with your buddies irl. its the only way to make living in a city worthwhile imo. it makes you look at that shitty old ledge/bank in that burnt out parking lot behind your local 711 in an entirely new way. what was once urban decay, is now your oyster.

it also, at its base, an effective form of transportation, and if some nog tries to jump you, the skateboard becomes an incredibly effective melee weapon. a truck to the face will neutralize almost anyone aggressors.

most skaters are really excesively imo laid-back, and if you both are there to skate, even with total strangers, you can have a good time just from this common interest alone. plus, with the barrier to entry being only ~$80-100USD for a deck, and skating being more popular than ever, its a good way to meet good friends irl as far as im concerned. beats the shit out of going to some shit bar and feigning interest in some drunks life story.

>gen-z adderall casualties that insists on playing it like a tony hawk game (((tricklining)))

Wait, so the younger people are the ones who insist on playing it like the older game?

I never got into Skate because I just wanted more Tony Hawk, but the Tony Hawk games sucked by that point. The more arcade-y the better. Even the open worlds of 4 were a bit to my disliking.

>>16384658

>skating being more popular than ever

Even without the massive media attention it had in the early 2000s? I know you'll say that just resulted in a lot of poser 10 year olds (which is obviously true) but I have to figure it also resulted in a larger number of people actually being introduced to the sport.

Basically the younger types like the physics of Skate, but they just play it in arcade mode. This causes them to abuse glitches and it's tough to compete with it.

There's a glitch where you can do >1080 flips/grabs from doing footplants after you do a single trick.

I never really got into Skate. The question is, is its soundtrack as good as the earlier Tony Hawk's Pro Skater games? Because that's the real draw of skateboarding games.

Thrasher: Skate and Destroy also had a great soundtrack from the time I rented it when it was new. I really gotta beat that since I still remember it 20 years later.

Matt Hoffman's Pro BMX 1 and 2 were both also good. I know they also did a Pro Surfer but I can't imagine how that one would play at all like Pro Skater or Pro BMX.

I remember seeing a better version of the Tony Hawk timeline one time. If anyone has it, please post.

>The more arcade-y the better

yea i didnt mean to be all boomer about it. if thats how you wanna play it, do it. i miss the old tony hawks as well. the last good one was THUG 2 imo.

that said, theres absolutely no denying that the rise in tricklining is what killed the skate 3 online community initially. when it first came out it was tons of fun. you could just cruise around and find dudes to skate with, just like irl and no one was pulling out flatground backflips to remind you that you were just playing a game. many of these guys quit once the servers got loaded with hundreds of screeching underage kids doing no comply 360 hardflip frontflips.

>>16384685

>Even without the massive media attention it had in the early 2000s?

absolutely. especially in major cities that have decent parks being built, i see more skaters than ever before. its honestly a bit too crowded for my tastes, hence why i normally skate disgusting, dilapitated street spots over the parks. but the rise in high quality, often times concrete, parks has definitely made it more popular.

in NYC alone theres several dozen new free outdoor park within the last 5 years or so. really nice park too, not some slappy shit and a flatbar. fuck, most of em have legitimate bowls too.

>>16384729

soundtrack for skate is garbage imo, only a few good songs per and a bunch of hip hop shit too which is total trash to skate to imo. ya need something fast and intense, or at least rockin. not shitty 80BPM 2 bar repeats with lyrics about bullshit. but you can load in your own playlists on ps3 if you have them on your HDD i think. i normally just mute the music and listen to what i want on my computer as its way simpler.

Skate is less linear and more open-world. Expect to spend a lot of time finding cool lines to skate and dicking around. Skate 2's probably the best due to superior map design, and good artistic direction, but they're all enjoyable.

>What are the best skateboarding games?

Tony Hawk's Pro Skater 2, Tony Hawk's Underground, Tony Hawk's Proving Ground, Skate 1 and 2, and Thrasher: Skate and Destroy.

These are the best. The Tony Hawk games are easy enough to understand, but Proving Ground was absolutely an understated game and overlooked by virtually everyone in spite of being arguably one of the best games in the series. Not joking. Skate 1 and 2 are arguably the best skateboarding games ever made, but I think Skate 1 edges it out for being purely about skateboarding and no other gimmicky shit like Hall of Meat.

Thrasher: Skate and Destroy is an outlier and is, low key, one of the absolute best skateboarding games ever made. It has a fantastic soundtrack, is free of any and all the trappings that penetrated the skateboarding genre when Tony Hawk came out, and was Skate before Skate became a thing two gens later.

With how successful his games were, it's a shame he can't manage to license his name to any devs that would try to make something like the successful iterations of his franchise. If he did, it would probably do well. But I guess that just goes to show how far games have fallen.

Surely we're at the point where indie devs can create something like PS1 games, aren't we? People have been making NES and SNES like games for years. Move on to PS1 already and give me something like THPS.

Not too old, but if you're not in alright shape you'll want to start pretty slow. Find a flat empty parking lot and just push around, get very comfortable riding to the point you can just throw the board down and cruise like it's nothing. Then you can start learning some more basics like pivoting, ollies, and such. Don't expect to be doing flip tricks or anything too cool for some time, but with patience and persistence you can make progress. Be ready to fall, a lot. Everyone does. If you don't know how to take a fall properly then you'll want to be extra careful, it's something you'll (hopefully) learn as you go. Learn what mongo pushing is and then never do it.

idk wtf the corporate bigwigs are doing honestly

other than nike, most major corporations have been totally aloof in regards to the recent surge in popularity of the sport. and while im lukewarm on nikes encroachment over the sport this last decade and their shoes are total shit to skate in imo, at the very least i can accept that theyve been using their tax write off donations to build some very nice free outdoor concrete parks all over the place.

as a skater, im glad to see corporate cluelessness, as skateboardings best times and greatest innovations imo always came as a result of it being grassroots, and having private companies running the show. like, when all the vision guys were the poster-children of it back in the 80s it was HUGE, there was tons of money in it, and every other kid had a deck.

the problem was, it was also kind of fucking lame. it wasnt till vert "died" and the money left till it became what it is today.

on the other hand, the /v/irgin in me feels exactly as you do.

it's not just skating games, action sports games in general pretty much disappeared when ea sports BIG got axed not to mention those fuckers killed blackbox part of the problem is probably that unlike fifa or madden, there's no central license that can be bought to have the official skateboarderman game which also means there's no necessity to shit one out every year. skateboarding might be popular rn but therehasn't been anyone with that mainstream crossover appeal since tony hawk & maybe bam. dydrek maybe had that visibility for a minute but not anymore. the whole industry is super anemic right now. the corporate shoe companies basically fucked everything up

Yeah, I was surprised by how innovative that game was. Think it came out like a year before 4, which would include almost all the new stuff Aggressive Inline introduced. It was a good game, but it was definitely a bit platformer-ish to some degree. You had to really work to reach those Special Trick/Stat icons in some of those levels, but the game was a definite time sink in the best kind of way.

How's THUG Pro? What content does it have? Is it just sandbox gameplay with a bunch of levels? It doesn't have the actual single player challenges, right? What I want is a game that combines all the content from as many of these games as possible, but that includes things like individual challenges, soundtracks, characters, etc.

Hey man, you wanna know what really sucks? Despite skating for years, and running with a sponsor, I suffered a major knee injury on a 15 stair set, that took me out of the game, I was only 17, At 23 I decided to buy a skateboard, but found myself unable to heal from injuries as quickly, a sprained wrist that would have healed in less than 2 days took 2 months to heal, this gets even worse for bone injuries, leading to more permanent nerve damage, so it doesn't even matter if you get into shape, if you're over 20, any relatively minor beef will most likely ruin it for you

It's sad, really.

>Was Skateboarding Fun

Yes, yes it was, and I'm sure many of the folks here can relate, THUG is what originally got me into it, there's something special about finding new locations with rails and ledges that were bolted or destroyed due to pegs from the BMX folks and just taking on new challenges, hanging with friends, shit talking and generally overcoming the fears of the next big stair set, or rail, or bowl, looking back on it now, it's amazing how stupid we were, some of those bowls had almost 90% drops and were over 25 feet deep, and we'd just do running drop-ins into them, the best part was really just the initial fear, and getting over it, and then polishing up what you can do on a street set, or vert setup, sadly this also makes you really fucking confident, and you miss things, like cracks before the stairs and fucking with your ollie timing, so you end up hitting the 13th stair knee first while debating whether or not you can catch your board under your feet*

I will never forget my first REAL skateboard though, being able to pick out the bearings, the deck, the wheels, the trucks and hell, the risers if you had money to spare. it was a blind deck with lucky risers, industrial trucks, ABEC 7 panthers and spitfire wheels

I wouldn't say it is at all. People are going even bigger than ever, to the point some skaters are more like stunt men. It's crazy. But again, there a many types of skating so you don't have to go huge to be pro, and you certainly don't if you're just doing it for fun.
