Having experience with roguelikes doesn't make you good, being able to tolerate roguelikes doesn't make you good. Sure, it indicates that you could tolerate some garbage game design, but that's about it.

Don't starve was always bullshit both before and after the expansions.
Before: after enough time played you'll either get swarmed by way too many hounds, that would also potentially burn your shit if you missmanage defending it, or you'll die of boredom kiting forever increasing packs. Defending with traps and fortifications would ultimately drain your entire map of resources, but other than that freemode was ultimately pointless, the moment you get a steady supply of honey and monster meat.
After: summer heat and other various bullshit weather conditions, bosses that take forever to kill with extremely irritating methodic combat, etc, however the endgame has expanded to the point where it would take several seasons and many cave expeditions to "complete".
Adventure: outside of RNG, it boiled down to finding the most safe world, where you could farm equipment that ultimately would let you rush through all the other worlds, because some of them are either plain uninhabitable, or are management traps, that would force you into unprofitable routines that would take all of your time from progressing through the world and would either take forever to progress through or forever to eventually run out of resources and game over.
Basically I don't understand your complaint, from that point of view DS was always trash, meaning that you either are/was bad or retarded.
