Well if we're counting Heroes with its alternate timelines/dimensions then there are tons of Brolys. All the Xeno/Dark characters are fucking crazy though and I'm glad that now more people might become aware of the crazy Dragon Ball video game lore. It's like there's a whole universe of content below the surface that people didn't know about.
>First there's the manga. If you want the core of the story, here's the most bare bones (but also most focused) form.
>then there's the anime, including filler and movies, since they reference each other. Introduces inconsistencies, but it's clearly intended to still be one story. Except those Dragon Ball (non-Z) movies, but even elements from those get referenced in filler sometimes, probably by accident. But overall, you've got more content. It's not as focused and it introduces inconsistencies, but there's also plenty of fun to be had.
>if you're not a casual you'll probably be inclined to read Jaco the Galactic Patrolman, and once you do, you'll realize that there are several other short Galactic Patrol manga, and before you know it, you've found that there are a bunch of other Toriyama manga that are technically in the Dragon Ball universe
>That's to say nothing of Dr. Slump, which is great on its own merits, of course, but is actually long and must be appreciated as its own thing, despite great crossovers it has with Dragon Ball later on maybe being what incentivizes modern fans to check it out.
>then you realize that Neko Majin is really the closest you're gonna get to an actual Toriyama authored sequel to Dragon Ball. It's good, at least.
>So now you're out of content and you're left searching for the scattered extra material from over the years. Fire/traffic safety videos. An OVA that is really cutscenes from an NES game but fully animated and released on VHS. A japanese only VR Arcade game. Some sort of weird fully animated trivia game that was played with something resembling a telephone. A bunch of weird little specials that are nearly impossible to find now. All fit well enough into the anime. As well as the movies fit, anyway.
>finally you have the newer video game lore. Online, Xenoverse, Heroes. Unlike the previous scattered video game stories, these actually link and have recurring characters, factions, and plotlines that are built up to have a surprising level of depth, but you would never know about them if you don't venture into this part of the universe. You could never even have an inkling of any of this if you only watched the anime. But here's where it goes full retard, throws in everything from all of the above, and it's great.

>Broly makes sense in the case that previous saiyans don't sound like they could ever get to the point of Vegeta/Goku and a mutant that just has insane power and jumpstarts to a "super saiyan 2" of sorts makes more sense for the race.
The best I could ever figure for Broly is that he is the actual Super Saiyan told of in the legend, that is supposed to appear once every thousand years. Goku is just another Super Saiyan who happened to appear just barely before the actual one from the legend. So is Vegeta. And Trunks (but he's from the future so only sorta). It's stupid, but it's as much sense as it's gonna make.
>Anime Super and Manga Super are kind of different beasts in the sense of how they're handled; i can sorta admire some of what manga super does but the anime has been a constant disappointment.
I believe Toyotaro has good ideas, and is a good writer in general. I love what he did with the other spinoff mangas he's done. But most of the manga was him trying to keep up with the anime, which was far ahead of him, so he just had to rush through, only barely taking time to fix a few major fuckups. Like the time travel in the Black arc actually makes sense in the manga. Jiren actually has a motivation. Kale is actually berserk and has to be subdued by Caulifla forcing a fusion. All interesting stuff that the anime surely would have copied if the manga existed when the anime was being made. But instead the manga ends up effectively being based on the anime, since it's just trying to keep up.
