Why is it a PS1 modern military shooter has better storytelling, memorable characters and really fun levels and every modern attempt at doing the same has crashed and burned? I'm replaying the trilogy after playing it as a kid and I'm impressed at how solid it is. The multiplayer is even solid.

tfw none of those weapons, including the taser, are available on this mission in the final game

The creators of Bubsy 3D who finally mastered Playstation hardware while at the tail-end of it's lifespan, just a shame that the jump to the PS2 with Omega Strain failed hard, so the studio went to making games for the PSP and Vita, can't say the same for their new game, Days Gone.

Omega Strain was actually really ahead of its time

>shooter with a coop focus

>Progression based advancement where you replay old missions to unlock new ranks and get new equipment

>Heavy focus on player customization

This sort of thing is standard nowadays it was just not feasible back when the PS2 was around. Iirc the lead designer said that he pushed for the game to be online only but it was Sony who forced them to implement singleplayer. Which is ironic because it's the only way to play it nowadays due to the server being shut down.

Also straight up the best aspect of the trilogy was the minigames in SF3. I wish more games had on-demand customizable missions like these. I only know of mobile games and games on the PSP that also did this.

Too bad it was paywalled behind online multiplayer, which was a nightmare, still played the living shit out of it till they finally shut down servers in 2011. Just like any Sony franchises, they neglected and abandoned it.

Pretty much everything about games (except for sheer graphical power) was better back then. Devs gave a shit and wanted to make good games.

Syphon Filter was indeed a good series. I remember the second one having a lot of bullshit, though.

>Play the game back in the day

>Don't have online

>Because it is built around online there are no actual checkpoints

Some anon's here will never know the pain of being stuck in the jungle, where every enemy wants to spam grenades, and you have to carry a corpse for 15 straight minutes, and you can't kill enemies anymore because you blew all your ammo trying to get just a few steps further

My favourite was doing the tank bit on the final level with a knife, half an m-16 clip and a few grenades

>TFW I got gud enough to beat 2 in a single rental period.

I don't remember much about the game except for a lot of enemies going for headshots and the prison giving me hell.

>people that aren't me have played Omega Strain

>I have never played that game online ever

having the abilities from the solo challenge missions like breaking necks, dual wielding and the shurikens made the game pretty fun, I also remember the game having loads of guns to choose from and apparently there are some hidden that you can get through a glitched box in the game

>>16388169

of all the levels the jungle level is the one I have the least memories of, strangely enough

I do remember bullshit in stealth missions like dead enemies 5 seconds after having their neck snapped somehow sounding the alarm

>has better storytelling

Couldn't tell because it was impossible to listen to the dialogue with such horrible magnificent translation and the actual missions didn't communicate well enough about what's happening in the game.

>memorable characters

Like…?

>really fun levels

Levels themselves didn't do much, I'd say they barely even utilized the fact that the games are 3D.

I'd say solid gameplay is what carried the series and why otherwise bland minigame gamemode in SF3 works. The game was punishing if you didn't manage your armor well or didn't avoid explosions, otherwise if you were using manual aim mode properly you were rewarded with way easier takedowns especially of armored units, killing which in this way would also replenish some of your armor.

Quality of the series (on ps1) comes from it being a solid package overall rather than being exceptional in some fields.

Has there ever been a bigger comeback for a developer? They followed-up one of the worst PS1 games with arguably one of the best and I find that commendable.

>PSx demo disc with SF on it (and LoD and that Japanese cooking game)

>Infinite spawning enemies get tasered to death

>Tons of fun

>Normal good at the actual game

Though I remember playing 2 or 3, it's a flashback game where the team is being investigated and prosecuted. I got stuck in a jungle temple level, I think as the black guy? Couldn't figure out where to go.

I know I played the first one, but I couldn't tell you much about it except I remember it was good. Yet I can remember most of the Metal Gear games from the same time and earlier. I don't know why my memory is so selective about games I played.

>Why is it a PS1 modern military shooter has better storytelling, memorable characters and really fun levels

becos back then devs didn't have to blow all their budget in graphixs and marketing just to woo the casuals

back in the day graphix could only take you so far, if you wanted to stand out, you needed to be good with everything else

but now a days normalfags eat any turd that's polished enough and nobody has time to polish a large well designed level to mirror shine so they just make something linear and generic with "cinematic" hand holding and spoon feeding to appeal to the lowest common denominator

TLDR:

7th gen was a mistake

not surpriced the third game floped since it had so many shit traits that are le current gen standard but i am astonished to remember that Sony was once kinda based

9f94ea  No.16433452

Metal Gear is probably more memorable because of how insane and over-the-top it can get. It also has a lot of stuff that makes for funny memes. Syphon Filter doesn't share those traits. It's more straightforward.

>>16433417

Third-person shooter.
