You know, after a few days of playing this game for the third time and trying to figure out my feelings towards this game, I have to say that I've settled on depressing, because the amount of potential in it is enormous. It never does anything quite right, but the majority of its issues seem to be due to casualization. Before I get into any of that, I want to talk about a side mission to set things up.
The one in particular that is of interest to me is a series of quests where you have to find Flamel's laboratory. It involves finding a couple of parts to form a mechanism that allows you to unlock the door to the laboratory as well as open a secret door in Notre Dame. Now, there's not much purpose in this door as there isn't much underground to begin with, but it's now available for you to make undetected entrances into Notre Dame, which is enormously useful in the eventual assassination mission that takes place there. That is, if you don't want to spend the time pick pocketing a guard for a key, lockpicking the window, or disguising yourself as a guard to enter in undetected, though all of that happens within the mission.
I don't know if this was a one time thing, because I just powered through the main story without bothering with anything else, but this simple thing combined with other factors really sparks my imagination as to how a few changes could've made Unity a great game. I can't think of another open-world game where quests can indirectly influence opportunities in other quests. This is something that should be fundamental to Assassin's Creed and it took them SIX installments just to scratch the surface before retreating back into purely linear, A to B missions.
Ubisoft understood every problem people had with AssCreed, but for every improvement they would take away two things. You want stealth? We'll give you the ability to crouch, duck into buildings, get into cover, but we'll remove carrying bodies and whistling as well as make tossing money a consumable and a skill. The combat was too easy? Let's make it challenging, but the stealth is now so shitty that combat is the most efficient option in all scenarios, and it also a direct downgrade of the AssCreed III as if that was good to begin with. This would be fun with friends? Here's co-op, but it's only for specific side missions, and the netcode is so godawful that you probably won't want anything to do with it. And no, PVP isn't back even though that was the best thing about the last four games.
There are other things too, like how easy it is to get money, the lack of horses, the absurd amount of icons on the map, the ugly UI, and the parkour that isn't quite right, but this and those other things can be forgiven to a degree as the devs at least understood that what they were doing was wrong even though they didn't get the answers completely right this time around. What can't be forgiven is Syndicate for throwing all of it away and Origins for permanently changing the direction of the series. There is no hope for AssCreed now and it's a fucking shame even though it was never good. It should just burn at this point.

Just to add some things, there are two important features that Unity has but does not clearly telegraph. In co-op, you can not only just mark, but activate a timer so you can synchronize with your partner. The next thing is that being in low profile on rooftops reveals nearby locations and items, which is so much better than a minimap. I only discovered this revisiting their E3 demonstration.

I don't know about its longevity as I've only spent a few hours with it, but I'd actually say that it's better than Black Flag. It bridges III, IV, and Unity together so it's actually a complete saga. While it might not have the newest parkour system or Unity's detail, it compensates a little bit with scripted objects.

I hated the combat in Unity. Black Flag was better, it looked and felt easy but it made sense.
I don't like the way the parkour works in Unity, there's no flow, sometimes the character refuses to climb or walk seamlessly on the rooftops.

This is a major problem due to the combat being far too easy.
I've only done it a few times. Rando's are huge fags and always try to work independently. I think there's voice chat, but I've never heard anyone talk.
>I hated the combat in Unity. Black Flag was better, it looked and felt easy but it made sense.
I don't really remember much of IV's combat, but I do recall III. I think they should've kept the ability to disarm and take your opponents weapons and human shields, but the removal of counters was a welcome change. The way I see the combat system working is that there are a series of general attacks without the Bamham autolock. You could also lock onto an opponent and it would go to a dueling mode similar to For Honor.
>I don't like the way the parkour works in Unity, there's no flow, sometimes the character refuses to climb or walk seamlessly on the rooftops.
It works well enough when moving, but I find that sometimes there are issues with certain windows. In Notre Dame, there are a series of columns with metal beams for decor, but rather than running across the beams like you'd expect, Arno will jump to the column, detach onto the beam, and keep doing it like that. The purple is the expected path, while the green is the actual route. I think they had the right idea introducing the controlled ascent and descent, but the parkour path should be based on where you're looking while the controlled ascent and descent simply override this when pressed. This wouldn't change too much about the parkour, but would facilitate certain movement that is currently impossible, like jumping to windows at angles. The thing to remember about AssCreed is that it's not Mirror's Edge. The gameplay is asymmetrical assassination, not the parkour.

I'm sure there's a way to frame Ubisoft's store shit as being an effective ransom to play their shit games, but simultaneously that would be undermined by their games being too shit to actually want to play as anyone with even a limited breadth of gaming experience or a small drop of taste. True, but the protagonist is an Assassin, he should be able to parkour with a certain flow, like if he was born to do this.
Like you said, the character should jump from one place to the place you're looking at, not waiting for the path programmed by the devs or jump backwards to his death.

Well, I didn't mean it like that. It should still flow just as well. What I'm saying is that Mirror's Edge's parkour is the game while parkour is merely a component in AssCreed. The challenge in ME is trying to string together all the moves into one big chain, but in AssCreed, it is, as it should be, a little more automatic.

Climbing is even more of a pain in the ass than in its predecessors. PC keeps jumping down while pressing the climb-up key, jumps on retarded edges or outright saltos into a haybale despite not pressing the appropriate key combination. Combat on the other hand is nice since a large number of enemies can actually overwhelm you and you need to plan a bit ahead before going in.
Also Elise a cute, surprising given how pozzed modern Ubisoft is. A shame she died at the end and you couldn't play as her either.

>should AssCreed have a RPG system?
I just pirated Origins to answer your question, which is apparently a little lighter on the RPG portion. Skill trees and leveling up are wrong in almost any situation, not just in the case of AssCreed. I feel that combat should be dependent on intelligence moreso than stats, though that isn't to say that stats should be dismissed entirely. They change how you make decisions. As for skill unlocks, I feel that it should be done in side quests. It would give you context for situations the skill can be used in and is more immersive.
With all that said, I'm actually enjoying Origins. It's a completely different game than what you'd typically see, but it has a lot of really neat shit like STALKER-tier AI.
>>16398752
The biggest problem with the combat in AssCreed III is that it's too strong. It's similar to a MUSOU in the sense that you can kill enemies almost instantly. Disarming is good, so is parrying, but not counters. I also wish that more of the combat was based on manipulating enemy weapons like you see in some of the trailers.
