Thought Metal Slug 7 was gonna be garbage from the day I learned that it was going to be the first Metal Slug game that doesn't start with an arcade release. Arcades are an essential atmosphere for promoting solid action design. It turned out to be one of the best games in the whole series.

It's a licensed game for a license that was dead in the water from the start. The anime made to sell these toys is so boring nobody subtitled the later episodes.

Despite this it's a fun monster collection game with an interesting combonation of FF's ATB and Bravely Default's Brave/Default system (Or MS Saga's energy system), interesting designs (a hot rod that transforms into a delinquent with a giant pompadour), good humor and some cute girls.

No I'm an actual Metal Slug fan. I.e., I play the games seriously instead of merely ogling their aesthetic appeal.

>you always get told how wrong you are.

Typically with pretty bad arguments. Looks like we've got some here.

>generic soundtrack when the first 4 games were known for their stellar OST, vid related

There's a few really good tracks but fair point I guess. Takushi fuckin Hiyamuta was an amazing composer and the industry lost something special when he disappeared after SNK went bankrupt. Toshikazu Tanaka is a pretty good composer in his own way and I have to admit his 7 score isn't quite as good as 4 and 5. Way better than Manabu Namiki's sleep-inducing tracks for Metal Slug 6 though.

>no new enemies, only a re-skinned morden army

There's several actually, but eh. I think this is kind of a weak argument, Castlevania does the same thing all the time. In fact most Contra games feature many enemies with functionally the same behavior in each installment. What matters is how you use the enemies you have.

>all the bosses are machines

Whoa, you mean like most Metal Slug games? 7 has a fantastic assortment of bosses and this is hard to deny. It arguably has one of if not the best overall set of bosses in the whole series in terms of variety and fairness; only the first Metal Slug really competes with it.

>branching paths are all military/underground bases

A couple branching paths are only added in XX and they don't really do much for it. I think having some sort of solid overall set of levels should be paramount before caring about path branch replayability, and frankly some of the branching paths in 3 and 4 were rather questionable.

>it's easy

Its difficulty is about in line with most other entries in the series. Advance is the only game in the series I'd say is perhaps a bit too easy. 7 rests comfortably in between the first game and 3 like most of the others.

Now here's a sober ranking from someone who has actually one-life cleared every single one of these games with a monster score:

1=7>X>3>6>5>4

3 is an immensely overrated Metal Slug that is far too long for its own good and has some rather lame bosses compared to the previous two games.

Patrician tastes, from the humor to the magnificent art direction that to this day I have no idea how they could pull off on the psx's limited resources to the porno music and the references. Someone cared about this game.

Lemme give you my own then. On the outside, looks like your dime a dozen sportsball game #267754 roster update shit. Except it's the first sportsball game for the Wii, on a control scheme that Konami never worked on, so instead of making a 1:1 port with downgraded graphics, they retought the entire game to be this sort of sportsball RTS with elements taking inspiration from arcades, card games, RPGs and some more. You can play as your Miis. You can build a spaceship to fight against star players and a time machine to play with stars from the past. You can become some sort of strategic virtuoso with a baton. It's fucking incredible. All other sportsball sims of later years are shit though.

An obscure snes/genesis game based on a pretty shitty fantasy movie that time has basically forgot. It has a lot of issues, like iffy controls and collision, but it makes up for it with stellar visuals, great music, and fluid animation. It was always a good game, especially when it first came out, it was one of the best shooters for several reasons and stood out from the crowd.

Weapons were interesting, it was full of humour and personality, you could choose your character with different height even and other details, christmas time brought hats on their head. Enemies pretending to be dead then jumping back up to surprise you. Digitised characters that looked like people - compare it to wolf 1 or even doom.

No game back then was perfect, but some stood out for having a lot of never-done-before stuff.

All my friends liked it too. The only thing that was 'wrong' about it was there being no angles in the walls, but in other ways it was well above the competition.

its a dmc rip off but its still quite fun. it has this melee + gun dynamic not seen in other games as its usually just a gun or just melee, you can combo different guns and melee to do various attacks or to easily defeat a specifc enemy type, its rather short and the sidekick is rather annoying at times but ash's one liners and the comedic cutscenes with the necronomicon more than makes up for it

Freedom fighters is one of the best "america gets invaded" games of all time, interesting gameplay that blends squad tactics with terrorism, allowing you to use multiple methods to complete your objective or completing levels in any order, making you chose between taking out a helicopter pad so it doesnt appear in the other two levels or taking out a barracks, decreasing the amount of soldiers in the other levels.

And despite being "yet another doom clone" the PSX version of exhumed is a pretty good game, a metroidvania featuring a wide variety of levels, enemies and weapons combined with resource management, exploration and hidden paths that lead to either a doll with a developers face or a computer part, the whole computer.

This game is great, right up until you actually try to 100% it. Then the janky controls and physics makes you want to stab someone.

Terminator on Sega CD was a movie license game, yet managed to be one of the best games on the system. Run n gun style gameplay, rocking soundtrack, marred only by lame boss fights and a shitty final level.

Captain Skyhawk on NES is a unique vert scrolling shoot em up with first person Top-Gun-style segments between levels. Made by Rare before Battletoads, published by Milton Bradley, it really didn't sell well or get much attention. Which is a shame, since it used 3-Dish levels where your flying height was adjustable and important.

Skullmonkeys on PSX is one of the last 2D platformer AAA games alongside Rayman. While Rayman is already throwing at full strength by the second world, Skullmonkeys has a far kinder difficulty curve, but still reaches the same level of difficulty as Rayman by the end. By the time you reach Sno, the game is expecting you to have your shit together. By the time you reach YNT levels, it's on. Then when you reach Shards, the game stops holding back. Here's a video of the final level, so you can see just how hard it can get. Sorry bout the person playing, everything else was people speedrunning.

I got the first game as a birthday present from my niece so i felt obligated to play it, i was fully expecting a mediocre game but i got a surprisingly fun TPS instead, so when the second game came out i bought it on release date and enjoyed it immensely despite being a stranger to the franchise i only watched the G1 cartoon as a kid, i have to admit FoC is easier (regenerating shields, broken weapon upgrades, vehicle mode packs a lot more punch and is easier to use, megatron's in particular renders every single weapon but the upgraded riot cannon useless) and a lot more scripted than WfC, but they really stepped it the fuck up in every other aspect. Jetfire's assault on a massive space station that ends up being trypticon, and the subsequent fight as he plummets to cybertron after you break his transformation gear, the combaticon and grimlock levels in particular were a fucking blast to play, don't sleep on these games and make sure you play them on hard mode.

>3 races per chapter which can be trivialized once you learn that the car made for homer and the hoverbike are the best vehicles in the game

>3 outfits

I have complains, though, same as everyone else, it's nice that it's a power trip, but it should be a bit more complex. I always thought it would be nice to have more complext gameplay, something at least trying to be DMC, having the generals of the opposite faction being more challenging, and having the whole "war" thingy being more important.

The issue is that almost every single mission in the game is simply "Walk from point A to B killing enemies, win level." You're basically going down a linear corridor while plot dialogue plays, then you go into the next cutscene. There's none of the fun of having to support your army, because you're usually the only single person on the entire fucking map. Aside from the final Golden Age mission and the very last mission of the game, the only fun mission in the game are actually complete filler that they made up to pad out the game that have nothing to do with the plot.

Also, they took inspiration from Hyrule Warriors and tried to add legitimate boss fights into the game like they did with King Dodongo and shti like that, but they didn't have previous gameplay to base the fights off of. So instead, you have a handful of levels that's just you trapped in a room with one obscenely powerful character with vague looking attacks and no obvious chances to hit. It was one of the few times in my life I cranked the difficulty down because trying to beat a level on higher difficulty wouldn't have even felt rewarding, it would have just been me eventually getting lucky.

The job system is cancer at first because getting off the ground is really slow. Even later on, it gets way too grindy when you consider that you may need to master three or four jobs to get the one you want on a character, at least a few of those jobs you need to go through are ones that the character is just bad at, and it takes quite a bit of job exp to get there. Then you may want to grab completely unrelated jobs just to grab abilities or skills from them that you can use in your final destination job. The races are just unbalanced as shit. Apoptosis have good stats, status immunities out the ass in the upgraded version, and because their nature is that of a mix of some monster or human and apparently pure chaos, they always have more than one race to pull from.

>>16381396

I did dislike the status effects at first. Most of them are about getting better at the game; and they punish you hard for fucking up. The one I never quite dropped the dislike of was freezing because there are entire stages with that status effect on it, and the bonus dungeon in particular can be a pain due to that.

>I've never understood why licensed games get so much, yet you could fill an entire thread with examples of good ones.

There was a time, particularly during the NES/SNES/Genesis days, when there were ungodly amounts of licensed games and most of them were completely awful. A large chunk of them were made by the same companies as well, and they were either broken as shit or complete snorefests. This led to licensed vidya getting a really bad rep until games like Goldeneye 64 or that one Spider Man game on the Dreamcast came out.
