No, previous games used a 2D backend fighting game engine with 3D graphics. As in, the game itself was coded entirely in 2D so that this Z-axis fuckery never happened. Street Fighter 5 and other 2.5D fighting games are coded in a similar fashion.

Melee's balance is something often exaggerated, and isn't really bad unless you're up against hardcore autists. It's not that hard to find casual players on Netplay, either. Wavedashing and L-cancelling aren't bugs, and having a meta based on unintended mechanics is not an inherently bad thing. Are you going to say Quake is 0/10 trash because of bunnyhopping?
Brawl is overall shit, but has great mods. I like Minus just for beng stupid fun.
Sm4sh was okay, online was decent, mindgaming people was fun, but it was very floaty and limp.

I'm talking about my personal issues with the games. I can't point to any single game that I like in the series precisely because of all the aforementioned reasons. It's either I can't play who I like or I can't play how I like. No game offers me both options because all of them suck shit and have huge problems that make them borderline unplayable. Never played too many. PM's cool. Legacy XP's pretty cool too but all the characters they added are kinda broken. Mage Ganon makes the new official OP Ganon look like baby mode, selecting him was like pressing the "Win" button.

I find it highly enjoyable and the selection of stages are just as enjoyable. I found a lot of my enjoyment in older smash bros was almost directly tied to the stages available, with the stages often getting worse as the series went on. That said, Ultimate also fixed some stages, such as new pork city by not making it as big, and also cutting nearly all the auto scrolling stages that no one liked in the first place.
However, it's a bit dry for content. Classic is enjoyable with the unique playthrough for each character, but world of light is a self feeding mode that is essentially event mode, only less fun. This is also the mode where you become aware that the AI is shittily programmed like an arcade quarter muncher, where the AI fighter doesn't get progressively more complex in it's fighting skills, it just reads your inputs and performs the frame perfect counter attack.
I would be willing to pay actual money for them to just outright import Melee's adventure mode into this game so I could race down big blue, search through the temple, and escape zebes explosion.
With stage builder on the horizon, I hope it is akin to Brawl's as Smash 4 was the worst thing in the world. You couldn't even make a straight line since it had no tools.

If something gets into Undertale, it'd likely be Asriel since he's basically the cornerstone. Sans is an entertaining boss fight, but Jevil is outright harder as Sans' patterns never change.

Have to agree especially wh n you complete World of Light and find your true main after realizing that you can only get to Elite Smash with only one character. Then you sabotage yourself and see if you can make back to Elite Smash 2 or 3 more times to make sure it's not a fluke. I've played it for about 50 hours and outside of playing it with friends occasionally I'm just really bored of it. There's no real challenge and the movement and recovery options feel really restricted compared to even Brawl. It also feels way too similar to 4 outside of directional airdodge, which is almost always useless. Although I think part of it is that I'm just really bored of Smash in general, it honestly needs to take a 10 year break before it gets made again (which won't happen.)

Ironically, I had included a tidbit about how I didn't include some things like Goku along the existence of other "impossible" characters because they at the least have high video game relevance. The Ninja Turtle games were very relevant and helped further the beat-em-up genre, and the Mickey Mouse games arguably made Mickey more popular as a video game character than as a cartoon character. None of the Dragon Ball games really helped further define video games. Goku just doesn't seem all that fun either, or at least adult Goku.
The deleted bit of the post also elaborated on how some things like Guitar Hero, Pro Skater, Oddworld, etc will never be included because of how awkward they would be to design for by nature. Unless of course we had the Stranger from Oddworld: Stranger's Wrath as an assist, but Abe's Oddysee is the more well known game.

The worst fucking thing about Sm4sh's stage builder was that it forced you to use the stylus, so getting precision things set down was nearly fucking impossible. This. Fucking this. So far there is NO official news of any Persona 5 coming to the Switch. The handhelds had some Persona stuff, but the mainline games? And they're adding in the damn Spirits from Persona 5, a sequestered section just for them (granted, it's a DLC spirit board).
As it stands, Joker was truly out of nowhere, with no precedent, no prior games, nothing at all on a Nintendo console. Cloud was in a few games on Nintendo stuff before. Bayo got her game. Snake had his games on the NES and the GCN remake of Solid.
Joker had nothing. If you take that, then literally anyone else has a chance. Doomguy? Okay, cool, he had Doom on the SNES and Doom 64, so he has some history. I can accept that. Steve? Okay. Minecraft is popular and is on Nintendo consoles.
If Reimu was announced, and we get a fucking Gensokyo stage, I'd be stoked as hell. Like, what, Touhou 14.5 had its special edition on the Playstation 4. That's the only stateside console release I can think of for an official Touhou game. I've tried intentionally picking on people before, even had situations where I'd make a friend who would team up to help kill someone 2v1 then kill himself to give me the win. Touch controls were not mandatory in Sm4sh, but using the touch controls was the only way to get higher precision. With non-touch, it stuck you to the shitty huge grid with no way of making it finer, so you were forced to use touch to try to make very specific things.
