a great deal of the old EU was centered around how the Empire was actually a horrendously overworked bureaucracy filled with the galaxy's best and brightest, and it was purely and exclusively Vader/Palpatine's influence that turned it "evil". in TIE Fighter, for example, you're never really painted as the "bad guy" and instead a large portion of the game is spent sweeping pirates out of sectors, chasing down rogue warlords who have stolen Star Destroyers and run off to form their own factions, or counterattacking Rebels after they Pearl Harbor some Imperial starbases
