>did negative reaction to other games in the same vein like DS3 cause them to change things up?
<did two-year-old negative reaction to a game cause people making a game in the same genre to take notice?
This question doesn't make any fucking sense. You're acting as though a historical event happened concurrently with an expansion released two and a half years afterwards.

It's a flawed but good game. If you played the Souls games thoroughly, then you'll notice all the small changes they made to the formula to encourage risky play instead of the typical risk-averse Souls grind; for something simple, you have a money multiplier that increases with each killed enemy and resets when you bank it at a saferoom.
Pros:
>excellent level design, to the point it actually references things like the Undead Parish elevator and goes beyond them
>great animations because every humanoid enemy can be dismembered in up to six ways depending on the limb you're targeting
>limb-targeting combat system gives you different attacks depending on which lim you're targeting, which adds depth when facing multiple enemies
>many enemies have deep move pools with feints, delays, and tells which allow you to punish them heavily once you've learned them
>tonnes of personal and weapon mods which genuinely give you many different options for playstyles, etc.
>the setting lends itself to a lot of fun interpretations of classic fantasy/video game tropes - instead of a tomb filled with poison gas, there's a maintenance tunnel with electrified, radioactive waste, for instance
Cons:
<game fell for the difficulty meme and many areas are pains in the ass for the wrong reasons, such as naving to navigate a 3D maze with no visual reference, or having a giant open field full of highly mobile enemies who have huge aggro zones
<warren is a totally uninteresting protagonist, aside from being wheelchair-bound at the start
<only 5 bosses, one of whom reuses an earlier boss
If you're interested, it's worth a pirate at the very least (the PC port is extremely good). I will encourage you to get the most up-to-date version with all DLC, though, because the structure of the base game is hurt due to the second area being an awful slog with DaS2-tier level design. Creo World was inserted to be a companion area and make it more bearable.
