5a05ac  No.16355878

So a couple of years ago now the developers of the atrocious Dark Souls clone Lords of the Fallen put out a new game to little fanfare called The Surge. It was the first Sci-fi souls even though technically its actually much closer to Bloodborne or Sekiro than Dark Souls.

The game came out, many hated it because the combat was fast, enemies could one shot you and often get in, combo and visceral kill one enemy then back off was the norm. In retrospect i think i had such an easy time with Sekiro because of The Surges gameplay but thats beside the point. Whats interesting is whats happened since release.

It had one major expansion: Creo World where the player takes a train to a theme park for visitors on the edge of the factory complex where the mascot robots have also gone berserk after the titular surge drove all the machines crazy that also added a huge roster of weapons and rebalanced everything and things seemed great. More people enjoyed the game and they announced the Sequel. Wierd thing was after they started showing boss demos for the sequel they put out a survey on what the players wanted change in The Surge. Not The Surge 2 but they wanted input on the previous title. A few months later mid last year they put out 'The Good, The Bad and the Augmented' a Westworld inspires wierd western setting in a secret bunker lab deep under the Creo factory that was long sealed after an accident. Again the game was totally rebalanced and the key theory was that this was to make the game more in line with the sequel.

But then the sequel went kind of dark and only recently did they reveal a demo of the final build with a promise that 'it has no release date secured but will come out this year' and getting autists excited that you can play the first protagonist or create your own character for your tired looking engineer waifus.

So did they stop development to go back and make a second expansion for the first to rebalance it? or did negative reaction to other games in the same vein like DS3 cause them to change things up?

What do you make of the weird back and forth development? and why are they being so coy about questions of which ending is canon to the sequel when the protagonist is still there? please god dont be a soft reboot and pull a crysis 2

So wait, is Surge 1 good? Did the expansions improve it or just make it easy? I remember being pissed that Nioh went from a somewhat difficult demo in an early level to being a joke game until dozens of hours in when you're fighting two bosses at once due to 'feedback'. WoW murdered MMOs the same way, I hate that shit.

5a05ac  No.16355929

>>16355906

The Surge launched with 2 major issues. 1: It had 4 or 5 bosses, one of which was just a generic dude that summoned in multiple copies of the first boss. 2: The launch game had about a 20 weapons with many held for late game and the first boss weapon -every boss drops a part as a weapon- was so overpowered it made everything till the final zone in terms of drops pointless.

Now there is closer to a dozen bosses with some much different stuff, damage has been rebalanced across the board along with improved ai and the weapon roster increased to 81.

Personally i would recommend it. Its not the greatest action game ever but it is farm from what it was on release and nothing like the trash fire of lords of the fallen. It is a Bloodborne/Sekiro style game based on "What if a Steve Jobs tech hippie ran a factory in the desert america was turning into and a strange power surge wiped out everyones brains and their exo rigs now are in control with murderous intent but with twists like Project ReSOLVE meant to restore the ozone layed ended up too late to be revealed to me making it worse and a new project in secret was ready to ship nanites and biomechanoform all humans into nanite based robots to survive in a world with no atmosphere, but theres also hints in NG+ that the whole thing isn't real and a sim to discover what made one person override some subliminal pacification mind control in their rig and turn into a part chopping serial killer

If you want bloodborne meets dead space but its less space trucker low tech and more "what if Apple accidentally made weaponised nanocancer" i can recommend it.

It’s ok. I liked it but it had some major issues, the biggest one in my mind was that every single boss in the game was awful. Not a lot of weapon variety and there are clear winners and losers in that variety so really there’s only a few ways to play if you want to have fun

I think its a central park type location. Near as i can tell its based on the nanite project launching but fucking up and trying to turn stuff into machines. I just hope they keep the vibe. I liked that dustbowl rocketyard with the shitty soft rock on the radio as these shambling people trapped in their exo rigs shamble about.

5ce80a  No.16356014

did they ever fix the hop/duck being tied to the same button as limb target? I probably would have had a lot more fun using the light weapons/armor if I could bob and weave through attacks like that without having to retarget the limb I want after doing so.

just overwhelming dudes with the heavy or single rigged weapons and stunlocking them to death was the best way to play at least the last time I played it. it was definitely the best way to get nanocores off of those nanobot swarms.

Lords of the fallen was probably the first game that was so slow, slower than dark souls 2 that at the same time made you feel retarded as the bosses with fetal alcohol syndrome struggles to attack you. But at the same time I felt the devs had the right intentions and there is nothing wrong with trying to make in the likeness of something good.

I'll check it out, it kinda looks like Elex which is another game that is kinda bad but I like it regardless.

>did negative reaction to other games in the same vein like DS3 cause them to change things up?

<did two-year-old negative reaction to a game cause people making a game in the same genre to take notice?

This question doesn't make any fucking sense. You're acting as though a historical event happened concurrently with an expansion released two and a half years afterwards.

>>16355906

It's a flawed but good game. If you played the Souls games thoroughly, then you'll notice all the small changes they made to the formula to encourage risky play instead of the typical risk-averse Souls grind; for something simple, you have a money multiplier that increases with each killed enemy and resets when you bank it at a saferoom.

Pros:

>excellent level design, to the point it actually references things like the Undead Parish elevator and goes beyond them

>great animations because every humanoid enemy can be dismembered in up to six ways depending on the limb you're targeting

>limb-targeting combat system gives you different attacks depending on which lim you're targeting, which adds depth when facing multiple enemies

>many enemies have deep move pools with feints, delays, and tells which allow you to punish them heavily once you've learned them

>tonnes of personal and weapon mods which genuinely give you many different options for playstyles, etc.

>the setting lends itself to a lot of fun interpretations of classic fantasy/video game tropes - instead of a tomb filled with poison gas, there's a maintenance tunnel with electrified, radioactive waste, for instance

Cons:

<game fell for the difficulty meme and many areas are pains in the ass for the wrong reasons, such as naving to navigate a 3D maze with no visual reference, or having a giant open field full of highly mobile enemies who have huge aggro zones

<warren is a totally uninteresting protagonist, aside from being wheelchair-bound at the start

<only 5 bosses, one of whom reuses an earlier boss

If you're interested, it's worth a pirate at the very least (the PC port is extremely good). I will encourage you to get the most up-to-date version with all DLC, though, because the structure of the base game is hurt due to the second area being an awful slog with DaS2-tier level design. Creo World was inserted to be a companion area and make it more bearable.

(ID change due to VPN use)

I didn't touche Lords of the Fallen, but it's quite a fast game overall. Dodging gives some i-frames, but you also have ducking and jumping as evasive options, which have unique and powerful counter-attack options that dodging lacks. You can also block, but that passively drains stamina in addition to draining stamina per attack, so it's not strong.

The sprint attack is strong, especially with heavy weapons, but I never used it personally and didn't feel as though I were at a disadvantage.

Never played the Surge's expansions. There's 2 now? Maybe I should try it again, though I'm kind of curious about the balance changes in-between the two.

At least originally though The Surge was nothing at all like Sekiro, and Sekiro was still hard as fuck for me. Bloodborne maybe, but combat was still mostly dodge based. Most fights though boiled down to rushing in with an OP running attack and maybe a fast follow up, and if the thing is still alive running away to do it again.

There's one weapon class where you want to lead in with a jumping or dodging attack since it has a quarter of the windup of a regular combo, but most weapon classes don't require that. The real flaw is that some armor sets are just overtly better than others, with MG Gorgon's defense being better by a mile than any heavy set despite being medium armor. Since armor values don't matter, the fact that light armor takes up less energy and reduces the stamina cost on dodging makes it a much better alternative to heavy armor. Set bonuses also have no balance, with Gorgon and Chrysalis gear being amazing and Cerberus gear being complete shit, despite the fact that the first two can be gotten halfway through the game and the latter is boss armor.

Not to mention, if Vaati wasn't the gatekeeping faggot he is, his immidiate thought of good A.I. companions would have been isntantly "God Eater Burst" but as we know, normalniggers and Soulsfags don't play other bidya james. Hell, the greatest thing in GEBurst is clearing the story, getting to know what to do, polish your combat and then try to clear all the missions by hitting the SSS+ rank while hitting the "No Item, Perfect Health, short time" triple combo at once and bragging about it, kinda like what DMC3, 4 do with their special S ranks.

I want to believe them, I do. It's difficult though ever since GE2 migrated on the PSVita, the GE series have been going to shit. And the combat hasn't been fairing much better either. However the combat in the demos isn't exactly inspiring, especially when even attacks murder your stamina bar. If it kept GE's idea and had the attacks not consume stamina but just the other actions, like a MH game, it'd be far better. And if what the director hopes to do with the stats is true, it'd actually provide something new to the Souls formula, far more that then Surge and Bloodborne did.
