After being burned out on my regular genre (squad-likes) I decided to search for a new game and found one randomly on a torrent site called Rogue Empire (v1 just released in 2019). Is this game on your guys radar, so far I've enjoyed it quite a bit. Although I'm playing a pirated version, it seems to be a one-man dev who actually replies to posts on steam, so as they say if you like it buy it, if I didn't live in the 3rd world under a vpn I would likely have a steam account/credit card.

I tend to differentiate between roguelikes and roguelites. Roguelikes are games like TOME, dungeons of dredmor, DoomRL, DCSS, ADOM to name a few, that are tile based and turn based. Roguelites on the other hand, are games like the binding of Isaac, Rogue legacy and Don't starve. Games with it's primary shared feature is a procedurally generated world and that is not turn based or tile based.

You can examine bushes in forests to forage, it raises survival skill.
You can smash a locker in the evac shelter to get metal sheet which you can make into a brazier for safe indoor fires. Make improvised lockpicks to get your first level of fabrication.
If you need nails and you already smashed all the furniture in a house, you can burn the house down, the wreckage can be cleared with a digging stick or shovel.
Most of the stuff in the game can't be crafted without a relevant book (that you have skimread nearby)
Labs and bunkers are end game content, cities are midgame but you can get fucked hard by shocker / acid zombies so be careful. Depending on your build it is probably better to spend the first few games outside the city moving between farms / cabins etc. If you stay on the outskirts they are sometimes safe to rob houses at night.
Taking the night vision perk at character gen is useful for night raiding. Zombies can smell you from about 6-8 tiles away (but its only a problem if you stand around.) they can hear you walking from 10 or so away depending on the zombie. They are almost blind in the dark except for shady zombies.

I have been playing cata nonstop for the last few times and I've been having a blast. It's actually really simple to start as evacuee once you know a few things:
1) Break lockers/benches to get material for making a screwdriver, hammer, knife and crowbar.
2) Crowbar into the upstairs part.
3) Disassemble the tank and carry two of the tanks downstairs.
4) Disassemble a locker to get sheet metal to craft a brazier.
5) Haul a tank to somewhere with water, usually there are a bunch of really deep puddles in the forest where you can fill up that whole 60L tank.
6) Bring the tank back, have both the tanks and the brazier accessible, and voila, you now have enough clean water to last at least a month.
After that, I like to make a ranged weapon/take down all the blinds and replace them with boards so I can increase my tailoring by making simple clothes (usually I start as shower victim), and then kill a dog or something which gives enough food for at least the next couple days. Oh and if you want to game the NPC trade system you can disassemble the dead computer for RAM and processor boards, which you can then trade to the NPC for all their stuff.

Dice notation is simple, 1d6 means one six sided dice is rolled, 2d8 means two eight sided dice are rolled. A roll with a high number of dice is more likely to result in a number in the middle of the possible range, a roll with few dice has a more even distribution of possible outcomes.

If you go without eating enough for a day or two you will get malnourished which means you get hungrier faster. One of the few games where the visuals are done properly. Cogmind too. Some thought and effort was clearly put into this. Decent visuals stand out as it's become something of an indie standard to make their game look as hideously cute and babyish. Absolute eyesores that drain the soul. Rimworld, for example, looks like the the shit we used to draw in second grade, when the iMacs first came out. Adding multiple dice biases the result towards the middle. This is why in Craps for example betting on 7 has a significantly lower payout (4:1 typically, which is actually disgustingly biased towards the casino) than 2 or 12 (30:1 typically, also biased but not quite as bad as 7) because there's multiple combinations of 2 6-side dize, that will produce a 7 (1 and 6, 2 and 5, etc.) but only one distinct combination for 2 or 12 (two ones or two sixes respectively).

nope. Horrible idea. In the game you only die from chest/head injuries anything that lowers your HP is a bad idea in the first place. Unless you like getting one-shotted.
Night vision and quick are good perk picks though. Never bothered with fast healer because you already heal fast after bandaging (even with a shitty rag bandage) and sleeping. Heavy sleeper is actually a bonus since if you have a cold and cough constantly its less likely to wake you up.

Passed by a crashed Osprey before getting within sight of an outskirts house, which was surrounded on all sides. Managed to kill a firefighter zombie and a child zombie before being spotted by a smoker. Killed it and fell back to my emergency shelter, thinking I'd just eat hickory nuts or something. Spotted more corpses a little ways into the woods, went to investigate. They had good shit on them so I stopped to loot, and then got ambushed by two mi-go. RNG blessed my fish man with a nice scenic lake (it has two camping sites with weird sight-seeing bridges on its shore, so it must look really nice) next to the starting lab, so I've living in the nearby lmao shelter while collecting stuff and mutating myself. Fish serum now gives the Nomad trait (I wouldn't normally mind it, but I want to build a base, not just drive around) so I had to do some purifying grind to get rid of that. Abusing all that blob juice tanked my health, but luckily there was a bee hive for that delicious royal jelly. To be honest, I still want to get some more fish mutations in later, so I think I will just save edit Nomad into some other disadvantageous trait if I get it again.
All in all, RNG has been all but smiling at me, so I'm admittedly getting scared I'll get fucked by something really soon.
First NPC approaching me lost his shit and ran away scared immediately, so I bit him to death for his kevlar vest. The next one was an asthmatic lizard girl, and less skittish, so I helped her with an inhaler and got her to join me in my quest to punch zombies. Had to take her leather skirt off because it was overlapping with her tigh-high boots and give her the bikini bottom I crafted earlier while grinding tailoring in order to maintain her modesty, which I guess would be a distracting mental image if I was a scalie. Now she need some Gills so she can follow me around and then we are off to finally find some mechanics books so I can build a boat.

Started off in a shelter with an NPC. All was okay until I made noise by hammering a makeshift crowbar with a rock, and then there were noises from the basement. The NPC decided to investigate, let the zombies out, and I spotted a military zombie in the four or so that were in the shelter basement. I went back to the ground floor and left the idiot to die. He managed to kill all of them except the military zombie and the military zombie didn't seem interested in coming upstairs. So I made like 10 washboards, then went outside to make a small fire for my spear. Except that the military zombie chose the exact moment when I was outside with my fire to emerge from the basement, burst through the shelter window, and charge me. So I ran up towards a forest hoping to spread my scent trail around, watched the zombie get attacked by two cattle doggos who would have been victorious were it not for the zombie's armor, and eventually managed to lose the zombie.
It was at this point that I realised that it was 2 degrees C and my bottled water had frozen. So I crafted my spear and went looking in the town outskirts, found an open sewer surrounded by shocker and technician zombies, managed to get in to a house full of some detergent, a Thermos, some books, and nothing else except a food dehydrator in the basement and a hospital full of 30 exotic zombies right across the road. Went back to my shelter, washed some new clothes in the river, got rained on, realised that I didn't have the materials to make a funnel and my water was still frozen. Tried stashing my frozen stuff in the basement (6 degrees C) in the hopes of it thawing out.
Need to grind survival next so that I can make a stone pot and actually boil water/heat food. Knowing what to do to grind skills is definitely one of the more annoying parts of the game right now.

Unless you find the right skill books (or perhaps really helpful NPCs), the only way to get a skill up to usable levels in a timely manner is figuring out the easiest item/procedure of the right skill level to spam. It felt quite gamey to smash up some beds and craft a dozen of hobo bindles in order to make sure I could survive out in the wilderness, and similarly, after failing to find beginner mechanics books, I had to remove and replace car accessories for a few days in order to gain enough understanding to read more advanced mechanics manuals.
Of course, the player can always choose not to grind, but then they will have to wait quite a lot of time until they can do what they want, and in the mean time run the risk of dying from situations that could easily have been avoided with more advanced options from higher skills.

Fire and a knife are the most basic abilities needed for survival. Making a fire is pretty easy all you need to do is grind survival to level 2. https://cdda-trunk.chezzo.com/fire_drill/craft and make this. Or you can just put a single point into survival at character generation and start with the ability to make fires. Some of the professions start with lighters/matches. Fire spreads unless it's in a brazier, fireplace or oven. If it's raining outside you need to build it indoors.
There is a secret technique to having a fire outdoors without it spreading out of control, that is to get splintered wood via cutting up sticks or smashing furniture. Drop them and put a firewood zone from the build structures menu on top of the wood. Then just light a fire within a few tiles. You can use this to light fires outdoors like near rivers or pools without fire spreading. When you craft you will automatically add wood to the fire but not to the point that it spread or wastes fuel. Only you can prevent forest fires. You can also make a fire ring pit but that shits gay.

Brazier is a boiling tool, only needs 1 fabrication to make which is easier to grind than 2 survival and 1 cooking for a stone pot. So all you need is a container like a plastic bottle, glass jar or thermos which are common junk found occasionally while foraging. Even easier to scavenge. Then you can boil water to get cooking 1 and make yourself a pot. Brazier has a double use of making sure you don't piss off smokey the zombear.

Is there a guide like pic related, but specifically for roguelikes?
>Laptop
Brogue. Nice visuals, good UI, easy to understand, and I can save and quit at any point. I like DoomRL, but I dislike that I have to be on a staircase to save. Sometimes I just play the original Rogue to kill a few minutes. I've never played the Adventurer Mode of Dwarf Fortress. If it doesn't make my laptop beg for death I might try it.
>(((Smartphone)))
Pixel Dungeon. It's the only roguelike I've ever played on a phone that I would credit with good controls. That's probably because it was designed with with phones in mind instead of being shoehorned onto the platform later, but even on PC it's fun.
>DS
NetHack has a mostly functional homebrew port. DS version has a leg up over the smartphone version because I can just press L and then tap a command, instead of fighting with a software keyboard or presets. Unfortunately I died in a really dumb way. A shopkeep was blocking the only exit out of the room and I thought I would just move him out of the way, but no, I attacked him and he curbstomped me like the opening of American History X. While it was frustrating, it didn't discourage me from giving the game another shot.

I'm pretty fond of vanilla Angband but i haven't touched it in a couple years. As of that time it wasn't a very hard game. Delivers a pretty focused experience. 4.x seems pretty different from 3.x.
FrogComposband is the current high-content/bloat meme band that throws in as much as possible, succeeding Poschengband I believe. Cool if that appeals to you.
Sil is a good game but really a different kind of thing. If you want to pick up any random *band that interests you, most of the skills translate with little need for spoilers, the main danger being having to deal with a half-finished or buggy game. I tried a bunch to get into Steamband but there was just too much dumb stuff and I didn't understand how to build a character (character building is not an issue in most *bands).

It's alright but last I checked it's somewhat bug-ridden. Dev is small and working on a future game at this point so it could be a while till things get fixed. It is a cool game, but my two issues with it are:
- You start to see the strings and pulleys of the dungeon generation system pretty fast, which quickly erodes its novelty.
- I find the game is usually either pushing your shit in or a complete pushover, it rarely sits in a smooth middle area difficulty-wise.
It could be improved immensely by reworking and refinement but that's probably unlikely at this point since it hasn't sold very well.

0.9 was when the random, highly unpopular removals began. There's an old cumulative feature restoration fork called Extra Hearty Edition that merges together all the features from there to newer versions, but it hasn't been updated since 0.14:
https://github.com/tmhedberg/dcss-ehe
Note there are no binaries provided, so you'll need to build it yourself. Last time I did so, there was some sort of dumb character substitution problem in the source files (line endings, or something? I don't quite remember) that I had to fix with a global search/replace after downloading them before it would compile.
Crawl REALLY needs a decent modern fork. Something like EHE, but with the ability to toggle features on and off.

- True kin are stronger in the early game and it can be fun hunting for cybernetics, however they don't scale as ridiculously as mutants can, they're a good choice if you're just learning how to play the game. In particular choosing the Night Vision cybernetic at the start of the game makes things a lot easier as darkness essentially becomes a non-issue, preventing you from being ambushed at close range by dangerous melee enemies.
- Try to improve your AV as soon as possible, damage rolls in this game have a damage figure (e.g. 1d6) and a PV figure which rolls against the target's AV to find how many times the attack penetrates. Attacks which penetrate multiple times have their damage roll applied multiple times, which is the primary cause of taking heavy damage. You'll want to keep an eye out for Leather Boots, Crocasins, Leather Caps, Boarskin Gloves, and Leather/Chain/Ringed/Bark/Studded/Fur armors. These all drop from snapjaws and provide AV, you can get 5-6 AV relatively quickly if you keep an eye out for these drops, which should keep you alive.
- Look at anything you encounter which you haven't seen before, some things you can encounter early in the game are dangerous and should be avoided if possible. The two most common being Chaingun Turrets and Slumberlings, the former are immobile but will fuck you up if you go close to them, even at higher levels (10-20). Slumberlings will also ruin your day, however as the name implies they usually sleep, they only become dangerous if you wake them up or another creature decides to bother them. If one wakes up just hide and wait for it to fall asleep again.

I think I might have installed the missing dependencies (pcre, zlib, lua/src, sqlite) manually.
I presume you're on Windows 7/8/10? In that case, perhaps you might try the new version of msysGit, now known as Git for Windows SDK:
https://github.com/git-for-windows/git/wiki/Updating-your-SDK
It has a proper package manager, Pacman, from Arch Linux, which should allow you to easily get those dependencies.

Yes, I'm using Win7.
I tried using pacman to download the dependencies but it doesn't have all of them, and those it did the compile would ignore saying the folder under contrib was empty. The folders are indeed empty.
Getting the dependencies from crawl's git and copying them over seems to work, but they've since updated to sdl2 and sdl2-image, and there's no freetype2 to copy.
I also tried looking at crawl forks to see if any are new enough to have moved to github while still having sdl and sdl-image but I didn't find any. I tried hellcrawl, bcrawl, bloatcrawl and circus animals.

It's a game about surviving the apocalypse (all of them).
Every item has a weight and volume. weight is how much you can carry decided by strength. Volume is how much storage space you have and is given by clothing. You can craft items and learn stuff based on nearby books you have read or memorized recipes, or learned recipes from gaining skill levels.

you better have boiled that water into clean water first. just drinking normal water can give you some nasty effects.

3291b5 No.16524984
Don't eat rotten food or drink dirty water. Boil it into clean water first for obvious reasons. Be wary of lighting a fire indoors. Now you can light a tiny fire indoors in some circumstances but I recommend you use a brazier since house fires are scary in this game and it spreads easily. Walls are flammable, wooden floors are flammable, furniture is flammable. Just dropping one splintered wood on a linoleum floor with nothing nearby is unlikely to spread. It's better not to risk it, don't leave fires unattended. You can put them out by dumping water on them from a container.

You can light fires in an oven safely too, it won't spread.

I still don't get what is going on with that. Are they like hybrid electric-firewood ovens? Cataclysm is filled with small things like that, which all make the game tiny bit easier. I can understand how the game is a rather obtuse experience for new players.

Okay. The water issue, I was doing the tutorial, and it seems to be a weird incomplete version of the game.
Now my issues are that water is always frozen and to get it out of the toilet I need to start a house fire, despite hearing about NPCs I have never seen one, my character eats/drinks at an absurd, impossible and simply unfun rate, and for some reason lighters and matches are the rarest resource on earth. I've made a bunch of characters where I tried to play it safe looting shit and running every time I saw a zombie but eventually I wouldn't be able to get food faster than I can eat it and I'd also have terrible volume storage which can't possibly hold a single serving of very hungry.
By the way I'm using the default world creation settings if that's somehow wrong.
I've improved somewhat, I see that I can craft stuff with the materials in the evac pod, so I try to make myself gear until I get hungry and then I go out. But then what happens is there are too many zombies everywhere and I try to avoid them and raid houses at night but just opening doors makes enough noise to call in a horde.

Wew these are all common problems that have easy solutions.
1. You can melt ice into water with fire. Literally drop 1 splintered wood on a toilet and light it, or put a brazier down nearby and light a nice warm fire with lots of sticks (so that enough heat reaches the neighboring tile.) Or you could go to a river and not lap toilet water out of a shitbowl like a fucking animal. Alternatively start in summer so you don't have to deal with this bullshit problems. You can heat food and water using a cooking tool like a frying pan or pot. Use 'a' key.
2. You can light fire indoors safely by making a brazier, putting one splintered wood down and keeping the fire size at it's smallest isn't too risky if you are desperate.
3. You can adjust the NPC spawn rate when you generate a world, you can also turn on static/dynamic NPCs to have even more. They mostly spawn at the refugee center otherwise. You can get the refugee center (and the roads leading to it sometimes) by using the evacuation shelter computer.
4. You can take traits to reduce your hunger and thirst loss, there are also mutations that do the same. However, just because you are 'hungry' doesn't mean you have to eat. You actually burn calories and use vitamins in the game. So you only need to eat enough to keep your body healthy and being hungry doesn't negatively impact you unless you are malnourished which happens over days not hours. Just check if your speed has a penalty before eating or drinking in order to not waste supplies.
5. If you gain or start with survival skill 2, you can make a fire drill which works like a lighter or set of matches does. (takes a little longer to light a fire.) If you are outside you can use a magnifying glass, or certain types of eyeglasses to light a fire. Some professions start with bionics that light fires like the bionic sniper.
6. Cities are very dangerous because of the special zombies, ordinary zombies are garbage and can be ignored as long as you are in good condition and/or have a weapon, it's supposedly safer to loot at night.
7. Volume storage is increased by wearing things like backpacks. An easy metagame strategy in the beginning is simply to make some makeshift slings from sheets and a bindle (hobo stick). You can get sheets from beds and tearing down window curtains with 'e'. You don't need any skills to do this. Note that slings are very encumbering and you will make it near impossible to hit things in melee combat. Drop them before fighting. (be wary of how much time it takes to drop things.) If you start with or grind tailoring to 2 or 3 (I forget) you can make dufflebags which give a ton of storage. Lastly you can 'U'nload food items out of cardboard boxes so they use up less weight and volume in your inventory. (If you unload canned food it will perish quickly. Cans are heavy and use a lot of space so it's your choice.)
8. You can switch between run and walk mode, check the controls it's usually quotation mark. Running uses stamina, walking while over your item weight limit drains stamina. melee attacks use stamina.
9. Looting cities isn't really safe, only raiding houses on the outskirts can be considered 'semi-safe' and 'fairly safe' at night. Go inna woods and raid farms and cabins. Remember you don't have to fight zombies you can simply lure them away and run back when they are out of sight. You can make a digging stick and dig some pits and fill them with spikes. Throw in some fuel and light it up for BBQ zombie kebabs.
10. You don't really need to know this but zombies get stronger over time. More dangerous mutant varieties appear and become more common.
11. Avoid FEMA death camps.
12. You can open and move doors silently with a huge move penalty by changing your movement stance to crouch. You can also use this to hide behind furniture, cars and duck past windows. Stay in the darker areas. Zombie hearing isn't that great and you shouldn't worry too much about closing or opening doors, even if they hear you just run away or kill them, in the dark they lose sight of you easily and mostly hunt by smell except for certain special mutants. You can take the nightvision trait to make night raiding easier.

cont.
There are other ways to loot cities, try playing as a roller derby player. They are very fast on roads while wearing their skates. You can take the parkour expert trait and move through houses, leaping people's couches and out windows like you're playing ape escape with the cops. If a place has zombies or you feel uncomfortable you can always sprint away, most zombies are slower than you even while walking. There are ways to go even faster, you can take fleet-footed, there are bionics and mutations that make you faster, the quick trait etc. You know that low grade meth you keep finding on zombie corpses?
Guess what that does. Apart from get you addicted and destroy your life. (can't destroy my life with drugs if the apocalypse destroys it first nigguh)
Night raiding isn't exactly about stealth, it's more about snatching everything you can and getting out with only 10 zombies chasing you instead of the entire street. You don't really need anything from a town but having a welder, medicines, books, guns makes various things much easier. You can survive inna woods fairly easily if you're careful. My favorite is living in fire towers inna woods.

A note about 2. The wording is bad, braziers are completely safe you can throw as much fuel on them as you like. But you can also put down a single splintered wood and light it without the whole house burning down (usually). If you drop a bunch of wood nearby and build a 'mark firewood source' on it using asterisk then the wood will be used automatically to keep the fire going when you craft. Make sure it's splintered wood you faggot or you might put too much fuel on and kill yourself with fire. I don't accept ANY responsibility if you win a darwin award for using these idiotic methods to cook, the fire service and medical personnel are all too busy eating people to help save you from your own stupidity right now.

Not really. It was true in the past, when there was very little food and basic equipment there, so lab start was a race against hunger and privation. But now the labs have so much stuff (unless the player is one of those masochists who turn item spawn down from default, and even then you could break furniture and machinery for crafting almost anything) you can jump straight to mid-game without worrying about food for possibly weeks. All the dangerous enemies are easy to avoid as long as you consider all light to be death and take night vision at char gen. Well, I'm not sure if those rare shoggoths are unable to escape their containment on their own, but bad luck is always possible. And zombie scientists apparently can open metal doors now.
Good tips in your previous posts. I've found looting large towns to be way too much trouble for its worth, unless I'm way into the late game searching for specific items like martial arts manuals.

I wouldn't try to loot the stores early game, only the outskirts. They can be very dicey, the only thing I usually bother to grab from them is as many sheets and rags as I can carry. If you start with an evac shelter then you don't even need to bother doing that.
685c22 No.16528422
Oh and this is the last tip but its important for new players of Cataclysm.
14. Don't die.
Watch out for landmines and minefields, they are invisible until you get close you need perception and/or traps skill to spot them easier. You can wait near a spot (spam that numpad 5 key) to check for them each turn. They appear in survivor houses (these are usually boarded up so you can expect traps to be prepared.) Fear explosive toilets, I know I do. Minefields are outdoors in cities, woods and on roads. Watch out for wooden signs, sometimes it's not a trail marker but a fucking DANGER - MINEFIELD! sign. These are noob killers okay? The only reason they put them in the game is to torture newbies to death, you know for sadistic pleasure.
Turrets and roadblocks these aren't dangerous if you keep safemode on, and don't drive your deathmobile too fast on the highway. They appear in cities sometimes. Turrets don't shoot until you get close and can barely spot you in darkness. Chicken walkers however are extremely fucking ruthless and will turn you into mincemeat faster than you can say 20mm armor penetrating cannon. I don't care if you have a grenade launcher, or a rocket launcher neither does God and God's name in Cataclysm is CHICKEN WALKER. Avoid unless you wish to experience the smiting fury of a divine being. Hunting horrors and mi-go are also dangerous early on. You can scare off moose by yelling at them, they fear neither fire, blood nor pain but if you keep screaming they will feel sorry for you and leave you alone after breaking all 4 or 8 of your limbs.
1d0d0c No.16528467
>>16528422
>The only reason they put them in the game is to torture newbies to death
This is very true. It's almost impossible to use the minefields to kill enemies, and even if you manage to lure a zombie into walking on a mine, it's absolutely guaranteed one of the shrapnel will home on your ass and either straight up mercifully end you too, or if you are unlucky, leave you vulnerable to all the other zombies that crawl out of the woodwork due to the sound of the explosion.
It's also good to know that if an animal is fighting anything at all, it will come to fight you next. Animal Kinship (or its more advanced versions) will not save you, a moose enraged by zombies will follow you even up stairs if it has to.
Another tip from experience: cars with light frames, like the electric ones, aren't sturdy enough for ramming shoggoths/chicken walkers/tank drones.
685c22 No.16528616
>>16528467
Terrifying is more reliable than the 'furry friend' trait. You can use it to lower the threshold it takes to cause wild animals to flee. Animal empathy is useful for hunting though, since small prey animals let you get closer.

Updated just now, last I played was about three months ago. Anybody tried this C.R.I.T. stuff? It sounds like something a Fallout 76 would come up in between farts.
I get what they were trying to correct with the in-progress crafting system (not losing hours of progress of crafting endgame weapons to a skeleton dog peeking through your window) but that's why you set up your forge on your basement/lab/mansion second floor. For the 98% remaining of things you're going to craft, it sounds like a living hell.
Does crouching actually do anything besides lowering noise? If it blocked line of sight through mid sized walkable furniture such as cupboards, sofas, ovens, window frames etc I could understand it, as it is is yet another extra keypress every time I want to stop running.
I think I'm regretting updating already.
>>16525283
My take on it is that it's a typical cabinet electric oven, but lacking electricity, you dump the fuel on the lower tray, light it up and cook on the middle tray.
However by that same logic you could also cook inside a laundromat knocked on it's back without the fire spreading spoiler: it does instead of ripping the backplate and haphazardly hammering it into a brazier that somehow prevents the adjacent, nominally porcelain sink, from igniting. Being eurotrash, I like to think the setting is Florida-tier weird like that.

during that time you should be able to gear/skill yourself up for dealing with spider basements, which will basically give you unspoilable foodsource for the rest of the game in the form of spider eggs into powdered eggs and butchering the spider corpses to turn the meat into jerky. That's worldgen for you. I tried again several times and most of the time there's like at least 20 map tiles to the nearest landmass. In one instance however the island was only 2 tiles apart from the mainland, where i was promptly fried by a shocker brute before even making it to shallow water.
It does seem unfinished. It just doesn't feel like a prison, more like a tourist trap island with easily removed barbed wire strewn across it, populated with Vin Diesel zombies (complete with their D&D character sheets). Heh. I did notice the abundant paperwork being rather weird for a prison office. There was also tons of those survival notes, so the place seemed more like a zombie survival larp gone horribly right rather than a prison. The idea of a high security prison with turrets, bots and advanced zombies, a long with fancy loot of course, (and some randomization to keep it fresh) as a starting place is cool, and I hope it gets refined so it isn't left boring like the regular prison.

Most of the enemies are generic melee trash while anything that casts is instantly insanely obnoxious, there are only two AI patterns (run at you or meander away from you) both of which are dumb as bricks, and what little interactivity there is (i.e dig/push/obstacle effects) is really janky and you end up with shit like multiple things stacking on the same tile or getting glitched off the map.
The only thing it has going for it gameplay-wise is making up silly builds but getting there is a chore and once everything's set you're likely so overpowered there's nothing to keep you playing.

Whether it's an enemy you want to attack, item you want to pick up or door you want to open, you have to click on it with the mouse, no walking into the enemy or a door to attack or using the period key to pick up stuff. The second is how poor the map works, there is hardly any kind of markers indicating where stuff is or where teleporters go, even after you've stepped on them. Also your field of view is your screen resolution, without any way to look at far off places. Also the game just looks ugly.

I think I figured what happened. The last update they made essentially broke archery. They replaced the arrows once again with others which have 0 damage and a damage multiplier.
The point behind this, from what I gather, would be to give the bow the base damage and the arrows to modify it's damage. Since the "early" arrows (as in, both the hobo arrow and the simple arrows autolearned at fab 1 and 3 respectively) have a multiplier of 0.7, and the early bows doesn't seem to have had their base damage upped, this results on literally no damage with a self bow on greenies, and a whooping 7 on headshot with a short bow. Thus rendering the slingshot as the mightiest "bow" i could get so far with a peak damage of about 14 because they haven't fucked up pebbles (yet). Because weapon training seems to be a function of damage dealt, this explains why you can't train with a self bow.
They claim on the forums this should have been fixed a week ago, but given the autistic drive for muh reelism which has taken over the project I wouldn't be surprised this becomes permanent. The only surprise would be how this was merged into the main branch given how broken it is.
Actually, no, that doesn't surprise me either.

I'll assume you're not talking about Nethack 4 or other forks, but instead 3.6, in which case I can't fathom what you're referring to. Aside from minor bugfixes, and dropping support for some old platforms, about the only noticible changes to in-game features are the introduction of deafness, and the ability to get lodestones out of containers with the #tip command.
If you're complaining about muh knifeear word, it's always been an inherently dumb, broken feature, and I've never used it. The only real solution would be to turn it into a meaningful mechanic, as with dNethack's ward system.

I think I finally realized why I don't like TOME 4. I think it's the fact that you're always following the quest line, after finishing the starting quest for instance, you always have to go on to the "Into the darkness" quest, there is practically no other places to go, this also means that the equipment you find, although random, is always somewhat scaled to your level. This is unlike DCSS where it's fully possible to find a gold dragon armor and an artifact executioners axe on the first floor. In Caves of Qud, on the other hand, you could fuck around in the jungle and desert maybe find several ruins and artifacts before even starting on Argyve's quest. It feels like you're always stuck on a railroad with TOME 4.

It would be wise to rename the game when doing drastic changes to it, I think. In URW's case the name is counterintuitive package, though at least the acronym sounds like something an Iron Age Finn might bellow after throwing water on his cabin's stove.
There isn't necessarily anything wrong in cutting plenty of content, as the old version will still exist (DCSS devs will eventually release a selective virus to remove every version of the game from the internet, though, before unmaking all creation to make sure DCSS remains unremade). I don't know how much content Sil has compared to whatever Angband version it started from, but it removed tons of content in order to fit its distinct concept, which I find much for fun than bare bones generic fantasy dungeon crawler.

Nice, glad you're enjoying it. I don't play War Vet much, but some general tips would be to stay out of sight from any perusing enemies as much as possible. This usually means just waiting around a corner or some such, but this will prevent your shock from increasing by looking at enemies. Looking at normal things like cultists and rats won't affect you, but spooky things like zombies and floating heads will raise your shock value more.
Also, if you find yourself in a tough spot, running away and shutting the door behind you will get you a little space (it'll also alert you to enemies if you hear it open or a good 'ol *WHUMP*). And for close pursuers, bashing them with [w] can knock them back a tile.
Oh, and I think standing on a zombie corpse will prevent it from getting back up (I'm not too sure since I haven't played the newer versions until now), but you'll hurt yourself without Tough or a good weapon.

Sort of, you want to avoid fighting groups of enemies and go for 1v1s if possible, but killing things does have its benefits. For example, a cultist you avoided on the other side of a level could pop up around a corner or behind a door and blast you with a shotgun, easily ruining a run. It's important to learn when and what you should be fighting. As for the loot, you should be able to get everything on each level in the early game without maxing out your shock, provided nothing crazy happens, e.g. a tomb, zombie pack, in the dark without a light.
>I've just been bashing them to pieces so they don't resurrect.
Yep, that's the idea, but if you find yourself in a fight against multiple enemies, blocking the zombie from getting up as you fight the rest of the group is invaluable.
>that last bit
For me, I find some of the ASCII sets in IA to be very simple and clear. Only turn it on when you really need it, basically. I've been in spots where I had ~90 shock and had to cross a dark room to get to the stairs with no light. It's not the worst scenario to be in, but it runs the risk of getting a phobia. For a decent strategy, the lanterns now take 3 energy to turn on and consume 1 energy per tile, so the best way to go about it is to only turn on the light to see around you then turn it off and explore the room. Making noise with the [N] key before entering might be a good idea too.
>>16630162
That kind of seems like a slippery slope to me. What qualifies as information? For example, knowing the locations of enemies in IA would surely make the game much easier to plan, but it would remove the tactical decision of luring enemies out of dark rooms.

>A slippery slope in which direction?
I think I can rephrase what I meant a bit better: Giving the player all of the information during the game would make the game more of a logistical puzzle than a tactical one. In IA's case, it's a roguelike, and tactical play is a staple for them. Having all of the games' information available could easily invalidate a lot of mechanics and confound several others. For another example, you can sprain yourself (taking 1 damage) by doing certain actions, but you never know the odds for when it happens. Even worse, kicking pillars over with [w] can sprain you and fail at the same time, and the failure rate and damage dealt if it falls are unknown as well. If it happens that the rate of failure for kicking the pillar and taking damage both have a 50% chance, I'd never use it, and opt for other means of combat. In fact, a run with no mistakes and all information known wouldn't even use most of the games' features if >>16630017
is right, as it'd just turn the game into a puzzle of how to avoid everything for dozens of floors.
>Surely stuff like Detect Monsters or other divination spells are useful then.
Oh yes, definitely, but (using IA again) they're only temporary enhancements, and finite ones at that for classes other than Occultist.
>So it wouldn't be sinful to avoid revealing certain things to the player, then?

I think the more relevant point is having the game make sense from the player-character's perspective. So you should be able to tell how warm something is by touching it (or, from a distance in extreme cases, feeling IR radiation, feeling hot/cold air blowing from it, seeing heat shimmer/glow, condensation, mist, hoarfrost, etc.).
Total awareness only really makes sense for something like Nethack's telepathy, where the PC is explicitly supposed to be aware of everyone's position on the entire level. In the case of your temperature example, having IR vision would fit.
>>16630396
>Giving the player all of the information during the game would make the game more of a logistical puzzle than a tactical one.
I think this is usually more the case for mechanically simpler games, especially those with largely finite resource pools. For instance Pixel Dungeon is described as a roguelike, but it really plays closer to a puzzle game due to its tight resource constraints that demand a small range of valid solutions. Not quite as much as a strict puzzle game like DRoD, but still.

What about like, spending a lot of time and resources to learn just one spell? Maybe you can choose a broad category like "deals fire damage" or "alters terrain", and then you might get a spell that deals 500 fire damage to everything not indoors, or a shitty spell that does 1 fire damage to a candle

There are also simpler approaches. For instance, the in the old shareware RPG Realmz, most spells could be cast with a power level from 1-7, multiplying their effects (number of targets, cloud size, range, duration, damage, success rate, etc.), in return for a higher spell point cost.

Just make sure to play 1.7.4 instead of 1.7.5 if you like fun or at the very least get the bugfixed 1.7.5

It's pretty overwhelming to start with. I played my first bunch of games as a mallcop, and just kept trying to tactically burn the mall down because I couldn't figure out how to deal with all these goddamn zombies. Tried all the other roles, thinking that the ones that start with a gun would be easy mode. It took a year to figure out that starting with a folding bike is more useful than starting with a gun.
You should try a cyborg assassin or martial arts master, since they can steamroll an entire town barehanded, which is kinda fun in itself, but also lets you experiment freely after everything is pulped.
Also, somebody explained a really good starting strategy earlier in the thread:

I started into Ragnarok/Valhalla again yesterday after only giving it a taste on a prior PC. Interesting how many QoL things it did without throwing everything out the window that defines a RL. I'm surprised there aren't more that seem inspired by it.
