I wonder if there any more games i missed where you have mooks on your side and/or you technically play as one, sometimes slowly becoming more powerful and less mook-y.

Also consider to not read spoilers below. It's just autism.

Pic is not related. No bully if some thread died for this shit.

By mook i mean characters, mostly soldiers, fighters and etc., that generally being used as a minor nuisance (nowadays at least) in slasher/beat'em'up games, however they are numerous, and generally (again, nowadays) getting massive causalities because of super hero that goes on crusade to get to the boss in action-oriented games. Or they work as minor encounters and source of grind in other genres. And, of course, there's might more powerful/specialized mooks along the way.

**The examples of friendly/allied mooks are mostly Samurai/Dynasty Warriors, though they were mostly used to give battlefield feeling of happening and mostly were not advancing. Another (and the best one) is Mount & Blade, where you can upgrade your mooks, so you could conquer all Calradia for butter.

If not count M&B and EDF, where you upgrade your character to not be a mook, the example where you always play as one (except the cases where you can pick hero) would be Lord of the Rings Conquest and classic Star Wars Battlefront.**

Kenshi is pretty good about this, you pretty much get your ass beat by literally everyone and everything until you get your shit sorted.

>fucked up spoiler

Shameful display.

Kenshi is fun.

What did he mean by this?

The Kingdom Under Fire games

Oh fug, i forgot about that one. Feels bad when you use minions as source of power when forging weapon/armor.

I know that warcraft clone RTS and shitty dead MMO were on PC, and alas i don't have Xbox for Crusaders and Heroes. Unless you can emulate 'em now with no problem.

I played the Xbox 360 one, is that the one you're talking about? It was shit, basically a third person version of Diablo where you can only go in one direction and the level is a corridor at all times. Also some of the bosses were really obnoxious.

You're talking about Circle of Doom. There is Crusaders and it's sequel - Heroes, for original Xbox. Simply put, the ones where you command unit(s) all around (movement, spells, etc.) like strategy but when engaged in melee you take control of officer in squad and fight like it is third-person slasher.

Don't know if your definition of a "mook" is accurate in this case. In single player M&B 95% of the battles I stood back and commanded the troops, the exception being chasing routing enemy and first battles where there's not many men to lead. I've always found that an elite, well-composed group of mercenaries works most of the time with minimum casualties and the hirelings/named companions that I always see other players use, are worth shit; they always fall first and don't seem to be pulling their weight. It also takes a lot longer to get them to high levels than to upgrade regular troops to the best ones. And it's not like the named characters in the game are interesting or well-designed at all.

How well do you use all the commands for your troops? I never bother with much of the complicated ones because they never seem to have any effect and usually fail to work at all.

Most of my "strategy" consists of me putting the archers on a hill, then having the infantry charge while I lead the cavalry directly through them hit-and-run style. Unless my army's under-equipped it always works

In some cases I entirely forego cavalry in favor of heavy infantry and best archers. Usually I occupy any elevated terrain I can get my hands on, form up infantry in a shieldwall in front of archers to take all the enemy fire. I clash when infantry comes up close or charge when they're thoroughly shot up by my archers. Shields usually endure any cavalry charge and mess them up through prolonged melee.

I recommend mods, like Floris Expanded, they add more commands, like actual formations for units, order of volley fire, weapon choice etc. Also more units, better variation, new items, and the sort.

Oh yeah, those are the ones which are actually good. Don't play Circle of Doom, it blows.

The companions really suck at first but I think it's mostly because they tend to be faster than the cannon fodder and get themselves targeted. Their main benefit is the party skills and the fact that they don't die. They can be useful if you train them long enough, or even just for their party skills. If you micromanage them properly (I generally have them follow me around and charge at the last moment to make sure they don't charge in immediately and die) they can get a decent amount of kills, since most of them do start with more skill than a shitty recruit.
