I think I opened a thread here a while ago about new controller design directions, so let's instead focus on other hardware/software.
I'm thinking either major design concepts that'd make a console stand out, or an actually interesting boot ROM "look and feel" like the Wii/Sixth-gen consoles had before they decided that they were too mature to make look like toys.
Anyway, here's an idea I had. It's a frontloading, removable SDD.
On the front, it has an e-paper display for the console/various games and software to write to. It can display images, and text relating to save stats/storage usage. As e-paper displays have very low power usage, and images can persist on screen even when no power is coming to the unit, and they themselves can come for pretty cheap, it should be very cost-effective. 3 gigabytes might seem generous for a memory card, but the user/games might choose to put images/sound/custom maps on them for whatever messed-up reason their software needs it.

Did that Minecraft thing ever kick off, or was it just more Kinect lies? Nintendo tried a little bit of that kind of stuff and made a callback to their history as playing card manufacturers with the A.R. card system, but that never went anywhere. Amiibos are a "thing", but I'm pretty sure more people care about the models themselves than any of the games that use them.
In the end, I think people would feel like too much of a doofus using A.R. compared to V.R., because everything in real life maintains its presence, which makes you acutely aware of what you're actually doing.
I don't think an entire game console that's just Face Raiders could really kick off.

I am not sure, but if their R&D managed to make a somewhat cheap and working prototype, then they will most likely use it for their nextbone, otherwise it's just there for shareholders.
I actually think AR is the future and not VR, since it is cheaper, don't accidentally hit stuff or look like a retard(someone showing you his ass, while you are wearing the goggles), and it works fine for both first person games(the ui is on the glasses, but the rest of the game is on TV), and bird eye view games(imagine a RTS in your living room, seeing armies fight on the carpet). Lastly, you will finally be able to play Yu-Ghi-Oh almost like in the anime.

>I actually think AR is the future
Christ, I hope not. One of the major problems with AR is that it completely fucks level design because everything has to be procedural to accommodate any space that the device is being used in. It completely fucks aesthetics because the whole thing is taking place right in your shitty livingroom. At least on a flat TV screen, that's like a portal to another realm where the designers have complete control over the tone and pacing and design and create a coherent world within that space. Same with VR, because it doesn't have to accommodate a "reality" to mix with, is free to create any sort of environment for the player to navigate without outside limitations or distractions.
AR is the future in the commercial space, but I really don't see it making much headway into gaming. Nor do I really see VR taking off all that well in the future either unless some major quality of life issues are addressed. Wireless headsets, passthrough cameras, better inside-out tracking, eye tracking, increased resolution and lower profile - etc. Chasing the "immersion" meme with a suite of increasingly more cumbersome and expensive add-ons is going to be a dead end. They're not commercially viable, and people already have a hard time getting motivated to deal with the hassle of the current PSVR - they're not going to want to have to clear the living-room, put on a haptic suit, attach the bungie strap, insert the tasteometer mouthpiece, strap on the smellovision nasal plug, and get on the omnidirectional treadmill just to play a few minutes of Skyrim VR Ultra Edition 128x rev9. They're sure as fuck not going to do it for crap like Job Simulator Horse Stimulator.
I'm not necessarily saying that companies need to completely give up on room-scale VR, but the VR market desperately needs a strong backbone of quality traditional games that really don't require more than for you to just sit there with a controller to get people excited to use the devices. Honestly, omnidirectional head tracking and 3D audio is enough to put you "in the game". Everything else is just an increasingly expensive treadmill of hardware that almost nothing will support and eventually end in an uncanny valley effect where you're still going to be acutely aware that you're just a tit swinging at air in your livingroom.

Furthermore, you can make it fully "virtual" if you wish, but at least you will look less a like a faggot, waling with the new Google™ AR Glasses™, rather than the new VR goggles, but I agree in the commercial sector, it will do better than VR, especially if people could see reviews when looking at an IRL restaurant or wikipedia entries when looking at a monument. If you are a financially-able customer, you should buy the special packs of "coolant liquids" it's actually just water in small plastic cylinders and ask special maintenance centers to "apply" those. Also the "coolant liquids" stop "working" after a week actually the cooler just has a timer and the faggots at company's designated maintenance center just reset it.
By the way, DIY maintenance of said console is illegal.

You gave me an idea. I dislike tiny carts, and in my age I have grown tired of switching carts/disks in and out of my consoles.
Consider a hardware system that has a "big" cartridge that is empty at first. The big cartridge contains several smaller slots for storing multiple smaller cartridges (the actual games)
The main system accepts the one big cart, and through the console's main menu you can choose which of your physically loaded games to play (since you have 4, maybe even more, all plugged in at once)
Or we could just make a game console with multiple slots. Modern consoles don't auto-launch the game you have plugged in anyway, and plenty allow you to download games digitally so you don't even need a cart and can access them all from the system menus at your leisure. It wouldn't complicate things from the users' point of view if they could plug in 2, 4, or even 10 glorified SD cards. Modern consoles don't even have that many games worth playing. You'll never have to switch carts again!

Can you imagine the average consumer wanting to buy a gimmicky game+controller bundle (where the controller probably only works for the one game) for double the cost of just a game? A game console coffin for the price of a deluxe mattress, 1.5k or up to 3k for the deluxe king model. All games are tied into various bio monitoring systems tailored for up to 2 people. The average evening gaming would go like this:
>Eat dinner alone because you're the type of person who would blow a couple grand on any sleeping device.
>Rush to your bedroom excitedly and hop into your coffin, click the lid and wham, it slides into place.
>You are greeted by an assembled panel-based flat-screen TV placed to give you about 100 degrees of POV, along with low res panels on the sides of the container for periphery or UI.
>You're feeling frisky and you want to wake up a bit so you launch HORR0R. It's a spooky games module.
>You're dropped into an Alien-esque survival situation almost immediately, your attention surges, the surround sound is really fucking good. You try not to think about all the really disappointing parts of your life.
>After a few hours you're sweating from all the close encounters, and also horny, just because you have a crippling porn addiction.
>Naturally, you're in adult mode, and with nearly no prompting (was there any prompting?) the module flips you pretty seemlessly to a spooky ghost waifu dating simulator. It is equal parts hot and scary and the surround sound takes on a whole new meaning. Because this is a fairly environmentally controlled container and mostly sealed, you don't have to worry about sound complaints or having loud stereos.
>It also comes with built-in waste management features, although probably not including a working toilet. That'd be a deluxe model thing for sure. It's plenty good to "dispose" of your "waste".
>When you're done coaxing the ghost waifu into eating you in the correct ways, the module decides you should be sleeping.
>You are dropped into an innawoods spooky exploration game. At first things
>You don't notice, because every time you're too comfortable and feel even a bit bored, the biometrics recognize it and give you a scare to keep you attentive. This is probably mediated by past history and things like average heart rate or factory tests, the same way you'd calibrate a controller or joystick.
>Constant attentiveness with diminishing returns lulls you to sleep. You used to be an insomniac, now you're just addicted.
>Jumpscare! You didn't even know you were playing. How long were you in the console? You close the module and check the system. Oh, it's morning, exactly the perfect time to start getting ready to go to work.

The gimmick is that the games are sold physical only like they should be and are tested before launch so they are playable and complete without an update, no DLC or mtx, no download licenses, no system updates, the online is free but barebones p2p with the official network only connecting players to each other and private servers are a thing.

Here's an idea that's semi-plausible.
Turn Xbox Scarlet into a Windows 10 PC. I know, ha-ha, it's already a Windows 10 PC running shit hardware - but seriously, they could throw a built-in Virtual Machine functionality and basically give everyone of their adopters a Windows 10 PC that they essentially can't fuck up because it resets to default each time you shut down the app. Most people wouldn't really care for the feature as it is, but if Microsoft partnered with Valve to have a SteamApp access the VM and essentially run any last-gen PC game they offer at high settings - as well as some less demanding current gen (by that time) games which won't get an Xbox port (like Japanese games), then that could go a long way to making a "all-in-one" game box. Especially if the user can install and run any application/program they want in the VM - opening it up to emulation without needing to port or make specific "Xbox builds".
Microsoft would still have plenty of incentive to push their users into buying Xbox versions of newer games - since they'll run better natively on Xbox than running in virtualization on a Windows 10 machine that's weaker than Xbox Scarlet since it has to run two or more OS layers instead of one - plus intrusive DRM like Denuvo… and they still have achievements, semi-gated multiplayer, GamePass, etc, and all that other shit their userbase eats up. Hell, MS could even take a 5~10% slice of each sale - and just opening up the market to that many new customers would still give Valve a huge advantage over Epic and possibly kill the incentive for devs to sign exclusivity deals even if they don't fiddle with the revenue sharing. Valve for their part is the only real PC store-front to have the infrastructure necessary to try to make their offerings console friendly, with pre-set controller configurations, built-in Xbox controller support, a console-like interface (BPM), etc. It's something neither Epic or Sony could match even if they wanted to.
And since Microsoft is already apparently turning every Windows 10 PC into an Xbox by giving them native Xbox game support - this seems like something right up their alley in advertising a full "Play Anywhere" experience. Not really innovative, and not sure if it counts as a gimmick, but I could see it happening.

Basically, an X-Steambox? That'd work very well for Valve, but I'm not sure how much Microsoft could gain from it. Then again, they just ported a Halo game to Windows, so maybe they're moving away from the game business altogether.

Apparently the XB1 already runs a hypervisor that would run 2 OS, one for XB1 games and one for UWP apps.
So yeah they already kinda did that.
Also VM overhead isn't as large as you might think, I've been playing games on a VM for half a year now.

This could probably be done with PCI slots or something similar considering new consoles are just gimped PCs. Consoles used to do this anyway with proprietary slots. The N64 had a slot for a 4MB expansion pack. The Gamecube had extra ports on the bottom for network, GBA player, and an unused port in early models.
I'm just going to assume console makers don't want this because they figure less people re-purchasing an expensive product is more profitable than more people purchasing a less expensive add-on to continue using the old product. Upgraded console re-purchases also inflates console sale numbers which makes investors and salesmen happy.

We make a console spherical.
The games come in a proprietary spherical format. Or we make a way to write info on water and pour that water in each time we want to play a game.
The sphere's surface is glossy and easy as shit to scratch, just like original ps4. Better yet, make it a fucking screen. It constantly has a giant fucking light on that can only be turned off by unplugging the console. The controllers shine a spotlight directly into your retinas and drain the battery in around 15 minutes. The light can't be turned off.
The controller now has less buttons for game purposes and more for social. Instead of trigger buttons you get a button that starts a livestream with a webcam and a button that posts screencaps of your credit card info on every social media website. The triggers are extremely sensitive and just putting down the controller sets them off.
The controller is shaped like a fucking square. No ergonomics, fuck that, we get a square. It will hurt your hands.
The system has no hdmi port and insists on streaming the image straight to your smart tv through your wifi this is the one I actually believe could happen

How to make a good video game console today:
1. Don't force your users to buy a monthly premium subscription for your account to play games online, rather leave it optional like the PS3 did.
2. Have a Blu-Ray/DVD Player.
3. Your SSD suggestion is pretty neat.
4. Have a Price Neutrality law, for example:
-Games can't be more expensive than 50$ for 2 months, and they can't be more expensive than 30$ the next 3 months, and they have to be cheaper than 20$ the rest of time.
-DLC's can't be more expensive than 5$, and Complete DLC Collections can only be 20$ at most.
-Complete Editions of games have to be at most 50$.
-Microtransactions are only permitted in Free-2-Play games.
-Anything violating these rules is a breach of policy.
4. The Operating System needs to have it's Source Code released to encourage modding in the community, but under a guise of limited warranty, a user discretion, and a warning that any attempts to play pirated versions of existing games might result in an account ban without prior proof of purchase.
5. The option to use any Gamepad you so please with it, but under the recommendation that you either need a 360 or a PS3 Controller for the best experience, depending on your tastes…
If any of you have any other ideas you can pile on top of this , I'm all ears!

Upgradeable consoles. They're already selling "special versions", so why not go a step further and start selling console parts? Ship the default console with 4GB RAM and ask for $100 for each additional 4GB (making sure regular sticks are not compatible - every piece of hardware needs to be incompatible with everything except company shit). Game can't even reach stable 30fps? It's your fault for being such a poorfag, here, buy our special GPU, just $300. Also, we offer free connection to our networks to everybody now. But non-paying users are capped at 100kb/s (yes, kb, not kB). If you want more, it's $50/month for the basic one and $100/month for the premium

The console comes with a a simple WYSIWYG editor program that is marketed as "a way to create your own games". It's incredibly limited, but does what it's meant to do: Storybook Weaver but for vidya. Customers can share their games on a cloud service that requires the console's monthly online subscription. This would open up a new audience of people who want to make games but are retarded, and people who want to buy a video games console but don't want to shell out the cash to buy a couple other games. "Endless possibilities!" (within the confines of the program).
