I recall hearing good things about Famicom Detective Club before. At a glance though it looks like only Part II is in English.

Considering how you played VNs, I am sure you will enjoy point and click adventure games.

The Last Express, made bythe guys who made the original Prince of Persia, set on just one train going from Paris to Istanbul, you have to unravel who killed your friend and one giant conspiracy involving some key players from different nations.

Black Mirror, the original, has you playing a young nobleman trying to unravel the mistery behind his father's suicide, an ancient curse that has befallen your family. Has you traveling through different luxurious mansions, rural cities, tombs and so on. Honestly I didn't really like it, but others do, definitely give it a try.

Broken Sword: The Shadow of the Templars, considered to be one of the best P&C adventure games with gorgeous artwork and top tier voice acting, has you unraveling a secret conspiracy between the hassasshins and the templars. It has you traveling on all sorts of places around the word, from Paris to Scotland, to Istanbul and so on. Definitely a must try.

I guess the Myst series might count, but I don't know if they are what you are looking for, maybe also the Gabriel Knight series, but haven't played it. There are some Sherlock Holmes games, but I don't know how good they are. For a non-P&C game, you could also play Deadly Premonition, and extremely interesting and sometimes hilarious game that is just basically Twin Peaks, but made by Japanese(not the first game like this, mind you, the Japanese really really loved Twin Peaks).

From what I saw the "remake" adds some pointless extra scenes with a secondary character, and some changes to the artwork, so just stick to the original.

I also just remembered Discworld Noir, which if you are a fan of the boo series, you will probably enjoy the game as well(sadly I haven't played it yet, but the books are more of a comedy/parody where Gods descend on earth to throw rotten eggs at atheists).

You just made me remember the Text Murphy series, which is also what OP is looking for. The games are sci-fi, but they have a lot of noir elements to them, and has you playing as a private eye.

First game is the most serious one, you actually fly through the post apocalyptic San Francisco, that is filled with niggers and gays niggers and mutants, you actually have to write the keywords to ask, no conversation options, so you better write those clues down on your note-book. Plus the addresses of the people of interest, again you need to fly there in order to talk to them. The game also has shooting sections, and classic P&C stages, where you collect items and combine them to solve puzzles.

Second game, is a classic P&C, no shooting, no flying, kinda boring, but at least you go to Mars. Now you have conversation options.

The other games are good FMV games, you move in first person and interact with people, collect items to solve puzzles, you do have conversation options, sadly you don't have to write the keywords down anymore, and you can't manually fly sadly, this is also when the series became more goofy, it still has that noir feel, but it feels more like Naked Gun, still they are fun to play. There was a recent game, that I heard was also decent so keep that in mind.

Also how could I have forgotten the Blade Runner game, very ambitious for it's time, where the other cops are also investigating in "real time" so if you don't get a clue or interrogate a suspect they will do it, before you get a chance. Hear it has like 16 endings, and it's also pirate friendly, since you can no longer legally buy the game, because of copyright bullshit, so the only way to play it is by pirating it.

I didn't add these, but Deadly Premonitions and the Sam and Max series may also count, though both of them are very on-rails as far as mysteries go and they're not the focus of the games.

The Umineko fan translation is good. Higurashi's fan translation was good too, you have to be thinking of Mangagamer's first translation that removed pretty much all personality from the writing. They ended up killing the fan translation since they gave up after it got localized, so only the first game is fan translated out of 8. The second Mangagamer translation is on par with the fan translation thankfully, but they deserve to have it pirated for killing an active fantl and replacing it with a closed source port (made in Unity if I'm remembering right).

No, the best way to play it is the Japanese version.

Return of the Obra Dinn was damn good. Me and a friend had a blast trying to piece together all the clues and details. Only downside is that it ends. Then you're left having no reason to play it again because you already know everything. Then you're just left pondering how to give yourself amnesia.

Steam version does have the original art included (unless you're referring to the censored Satoko sprite), but it doesn't have the minigames. Nip version is still the best, but for English I'd say pirate the Steam version.

Bump, I really like this genre too. Or even Visual novel mystery games like Danganronpa or Ghost Trick.
