On January 17th, 2019, a game came out called "YIIK: A Post-Modern RPG." I streamed it, we all suffered through it and made fun of it. It was fucking shit, and the worst part is that there were so many problems, one wouldn't know where to start with listing them all.
Yet, the day the game starts, April 4th, is tomorrow. So what's the reasonable thing to do?
That's right, play it again. Maybe.
See, I have a number of options that we'll vote on, with the link at the bottom. inb4 strawpoll is pozzed, sorry if so To summarize them and their pros and cons:
Replay the game on NG+. Predicted time: 20-25 hours
>Without the need to grind, I can focus more on writing down every plot hole and retarded part of the story, like I wanted to for my second playthrough
<We might not be able to rename any of our party members, even though we can't exactly recreate the magic of the names mattering twice
Replay the game on a fresh save. Predicted time: 30 hours
>We get to do fresh names and go through EVERYTHING again
<We go through EVERYTHING again, as if we had just received the game, plus we'll probably try too hard to make funny names
Just do the secret ending. Predicted time: An hour, maybe, most likely less
>We go check out the last piece of content we never saw in the game
<That's it, it'll be a one and done stream, no "story" analysis whatsoever

So I tried playing this shit for myself, I pirated this and holy fucking shit. I expected it to be hipster trash, I expected it to be annoying but I didn't expect it to fall apart at the very fucking beginning. I thought this was at the very least competently made, that I would basically play through this and get annoyed at the shitty hipster agenda while the game would be servicable. But no, holy fucking shit, this has the quality of a bad freeware games, actually there are freeware games with better quality than this. From the very fucking beginning you can see that the creator is a lazy fuck, not only does the game start with an overly long line of questions by that fucking NSA bird. The very first thing that happens when you move is you find out that the main character has like 3 or 4 lines of animation. The walking is fucked, the music is fucked, and nothing makes fucking sense.
The game makes jokes about how weird and gamey it would be for the main character to walk into people's houses, while allowing us to dig through fucking trashcans for money and fanta bottles.
The balls you kick are literally sliding motionless on the road, and your hands do not even hold items while you hold them. The design of everything is just plain fucking ugly and messy, and the whole game feels like a random assortion of things.

You can do that well but there are conditions that you have to meet, no matter the medium. If you tick at least one of the points below when making a dickish characters, you have a far greater chance for your audience to stick with him.
>Redeeming qualities
Making a character into a complete bastard is going to make you hate him no matter what. You need to give him some qualities that make him likeable to the viewer. Those don't need to be necessairly good qualities of him as a person, but good qualities of him as a character. The cool factor and humour work very well here. Think about Rance for example, Rance is a rapist, an absolutely horrible person and a complete bastard that never really changes himself but is still one of the most lovable protagonists. Why? Because 1. He is funny, which would be enough to make him likeable, but 2. actually has some redeeming qualities that make us sympathize with him. The fact that most attrocious things he does are played for laughs helps as well, and the fact that it's a porn game where the rape scenes are supposed to make your dick hard helps too. It would be enough to make Alex geniuently funny to make him at least a bit likeable and for the viewer to stick with him despite his awful personality.
>Self-awareness
If you want to make a character unlikeable, you need to be self-aware enough for other character to call him out for being an asshole/being an evil person. You cannot really talk about the character changing if you don't acknowledge his/her flaws can you? This one is ABSOLUTELY NECESSARY, for any of the other points to even work. A dickhead character is not funny, if the game doesn't aknowledge he is being a dickhead, and an evil character cannot change if there isn't a point where a character calls him out for his/her actions, or he realizes his/her flaws themselves.
>Make a character that is unlikeable for the characters but not for the audience.
Make a fucking character that the audience can root for even if for the sake of humour and coolness factor alone, but that are unlikeable to the characters around him. A character doesn't have to be annoying to the audience, and the audience can be aware and acknowledge their flaws while still finding the character lovable for one reason or another.

Use the self-awareness of the story, call out the character for being a dick to make him change, mock him for the sake of humour, make other characters angry at him, go into his internal dialogue and show him trying to justify himself as he stumbles on his logic while other people are trying to show him a way. DO FUCKING ANYTHING TO COMMUNICATE TO YOUR AUDIENCE THAT YOU KNOW THAT THE CHARACTER IS BEING A DICKHEAD. Doing that basically gives them a message of "I know he is being a complete bastard, but stick around, there is a point to this.".
Those points all play off of each other, and if you use none of them, then you have failed as a writer completely and make a character that the audience will not want to follow.

Luke was indeed quite the 'refreshing' MC for what looked to be just another JRPG Tales flair. The whole cast itself doesn't keep together because of 'muh power of friends and justice', but instead they have somewhat common goals.
Abyss also had a pretty detailed amount of worldbuilding, with all the 'fonshit' being used to even explain typical JRPG limitations like max party sizes or why your super awesome meteor drop spell doesn't hurt your party.

One of the failings of that game is that it's all in the gameplay rather then the narrative. In an RPG his character would work rather well, especially if you could see his internal monologue once in a while. Another issue is that like Alex his issues are embodied by a stereotype (Even though the YIIK idiot fully made him after himself let's assume it's a stereotype for a sec) and he's too generic.
If the dude looked somewhat normal or generic and had anxiety issues or some shit, you'd have a better narrative. The big issue with both Lester and Alex is that they're both attached to cliques, nerds for Lester, hipsters for Alex. However Lester's better written because he moves from one clique, nerd, to another, jock. Alex starts as an insufferable person who calls people out for their bullshit, and loses his one possibly redeeming trait and drinks the kool-aid and joins the hipster clique as an enlightened person.
Lester's journey is entirely based around building his character to become what is expected of a man's individual strength, while Alex's is about suppressing his existing character to fit in with a crowd, to fall in line.
While Lester becomes manly enough to save the day, Alex becomes even more of a fake ass cuck.
I want to reiterate the obvious, that people don't like hipsters. It's not a virtue to assimilate into a culture, even if "Manly" is a culture on it's own. It's the culture's values and how they affect other cultures that matter. a "Manly" culture operates on the principles of being strong to support others and yourself in order to reduce the stress of daily life and to point out the things that are making life hard for others and yourself, honesty is an aspect of that.
Hipsters, on the other hand, bring nothing to the table. They exist not for others, but to fulfill their own needs and no-one else's. All friendliness is a facade in this culture. On the surface that present themselves as "useful" to others while actively stabbing eachother and people outside the culture in the back. They have shallow and useless conversation, place emphasis on the importance of everyone else's opinion, not because those opinions are GOOD, but because they fear they'll be ousted if they don't. So they have no filter and every idea is accepted and supported. Even the ones based around rape, sexual abuse, hurting others for a small rouge group's benefit, even ideas of fascism which has sprung up in recent years, made clear with the protests and stomping on basic rights.
The fact that people hated this game is a really, REALLY good thing.

The quickest rundown is: a bunch of retarded shit happens and none of it fucking matters. Also the guy who masterminded this trainwreck looks like the MC so it's clearly some massive self-insert electronic wank and also self-flagellation since the MC is widely considered to be the worst character.
The longer version is a sad faggot comes back from retard college with a useless degree and meets a girl who gets sucked into the space dimension by star ghosts. He then runs around the tri-county area meeting people who're connected to either supernatural bullshit or the shitty album he tries to find (i don't even recall how that comes up), which eventually leads him to finding a dimension-hopping android that he keeps seeing in his dreams. It then eventually turns out that his reality is actually some kind of a fiction (implied that it's been fiction ever since the game started) which is slowly falling apart, that the like three implied love interests (who also look like a real female) are three incarnations of the same soul across infinite dimensions and that the MC and her are fated to meet passionately every time and usually fail in some way. The end of the game reveals everything to that point is the MC telling his story through a TV screen to you, the player, and you join the MC on the last leg of his quest to make everything right. It then goes on to suggest that both the MC and the love interest are actually the same soul, that the A1 alpha versions of the male and female are playing some extended power struggle against each other, are completely unbeatable, and the only way to complete the game normally is to pull the plugs behind the A1 alphas and literally end the game kind of like OFF. Also now apparently there's a secret possibly-not-retarded ending that the OP is too strung out on ranch dressing to bother to obtain, but you know, probably not a huge loss.
You might do well to find videos that clip out the shitty battles, except for maybe the golden alpaca fight since it's a combination of pointless, retarded, and almost interesting since it's shape changes as the fight goes on. It's a garbage fire of a game, but i find the colors with which it burns to be fascinating even if the fumes threaten to suffocate.
