Could be more KT's doing. Just saying since I remember in Japan they got standard physical releases for the Plus versions on the Vita that we didn't see here (for Rorona through Ayesha; E&L, Shallie, and AnS+ being limited physical), and thus they have a native preowned aftermarket for those, but I'm not sure off the top of my head if the Switch compilation port has a physical out there, or if they're switching to digital there as well for non-new entries. Though, if it's full price even out there with physical, it could be the idea that hitting a new market (IE: Nintendo fans) warrants asking the price of a new game, because they likely haven't paid their $40/60 for them before.

If you have an old enough PS3 or Vita, you can CFW them and pirate (which also gets around the DLC issue with the PS3 ones, where preowned physicals are cheapish but incomplete). That aside, occasionally the games do see markdowns on the PSN, but from what I've seen it's only once or twice a year at best, at least for the Vita Plus versions, and between having a "Three for the price of Two" bundle for the Arland ones and Sony's having declared the Vita dead, I doubt sales to the previous caliber are apt to happen too much anymore. Otherwise they're $40 each nearly year round.

Well I would love to buy Atelier games used but their print run in Europe is pretty low and weebs rarely sell off their games anyway. There are tons of AssCreed, Horizon, FIFA and CoD copies in the used games section but no Atelier.

I find that a bit odd, considering where I live (admittedly a burger here) there are plenty of copies of the PS3 games around, Rorona Plus aside, since most fans seem to have traded up to the Plus versions and there's not a huge amount of demand from newcomers to get DLC riddled versions when they could get the full one. And while on the topic, I see them a lot more than the PS2 ones we'd gotten prior. Though, I suppose Europe has it's own issues. Getting games late compared to NA, not even getting certain games; not getting similar print sizes would make sense as well.
Remember that PS3 is region free, so if our preowned copies as exports are easier than waiting for KT to do an annual markdown (if they even still do those), it's an option. DLC would require the same region as the game though, and I'd still suggest CFWing your PS3 if you have a system with the right parameters for doing so. Especially if niche Japanese games are that much harder to come across for you locally in general.

Thanks for the warning.
I just looked at the Arland games on the PSN and it seems that some costumes, characters and music packs are sold as DLC (some are free).
It sucks dick, but I'd rather import a used JP PS3 copy than upgrade my 2010 toaster which can't even run the damn games.
It's also disappointing to know that the DX versions use Vita's visuals on other platforms too.
Finally, I know these games have strict time limits so I want to ask you if I'm going to need a guide or something to play them properly.
