Something I really disliked about all of the post Origins DA games is they focused so much on the Mages vs Templars story in DAO to the point where it felt boring. I liked that DAO presented you with a morally grey scenario where there wasn't an obvious "correct" answer. And in DAO it tied really nicely to the plot since the player had to find a military force to fight the archdemon by any means necessary and choosing to get rid of the mages would give you access to the Templars instead. With DA2 and DAI it felt like they just constantly retreaded a side mission in DAO and ignored some of the more genuinely interesting lore that was in that game. Like the history of the dwarves and elves. Like during the Dalish origin you find some weird mirror in a ruin and learn that the elves used to have hundreds of similar ruins. They could've built an entire game about exploring old elf ruins but instead chose to rehash a single quest from DAO for two full games.
It was actually really depressing since I really enjoyed Dragon Age Origins it was the last Bioware game I liked. After I beat it I thought "wow can't wait to see what they do with the sequel" and now I wish they didn't make any sequels.

One companion I liked a lot was that Ghoul guy in Dead Money.
Because you have a lot of speech/barter checks when talking to him and they made it so that if you PASS too many of those, he gets jealous and gets the bad ending.
I got slightly salty at first, but then I realized WHY that happens and it's hilarious. Great subversion. He was also a fun guy to hang around.

You never start a relationship with her, at most it's a "yeah, we can have a quickie in the wastes". It's never something serious.
She sleeps around, like her father, and doesn't get tied down.
She fucked a bunch of guys, MAYBE fucks the courier, then goes to fuck another bunch of guys. If you look at her as your waifu, you're a cuck.
She's a great drinking partner, a good shot, and a good companion to give you another view on the NCR: someone who agrees with their basic premise, but disagrees with the execution.

Actually, let me pontificate here for bit.
New Vegas has a clear theme, one that the team picked because Fallout 3 didn't use and the fans were rightly pissed.
The theme is "Letting go of the past." This does not mean forgetting or pretending it didn't happen, but accepting it happened and moving on.
And the best way to showcase this is to have a bunch of characters that have to deal with their past. Some will move on, others get attached and suffer for it.
Companions:
>Cassidy
Attached to her family/Caravan. Has to let go and do something else (join the NCR). Still unsure about the road ahead (NCR is dicks, in more way than one).
>Boone
Attached to his wife and Bitter Springs Massacre. If he can't let go, he'll "suicide-by-legion", or you can help him accept it.
>Ganon
Attached to the remnants of the Enclave. And the Enclave itself is stuck in the past. His quest is about putting the past on our backs and fighting to day for a new tomorrow.
>Veronica
Brotherhood is dying because it's stuck in their old ways. They can't adapt to a world that changed and left behind.
>Raul
Lot's of old memories, Raul doesn't feel like he has a place in the world now.
>Lily
Stealthboy addiction at first. Then you realize she's attached to her old family.
The Factions all follow the same thing. House is a ghost from the distant past. The Legion is a ghost from an even more distant past. And the NCR still clings to it's former glory conviced they still are as powerfull as they were 30 years ago. All 3 need to change, all 3 need to realize that time has moved on. And it's the Courier that does so by picking one of them.
Then you got the DLC, all of it is varying degrees of "bad shit happened, we just can't forget or let it go, let's go on a vendetta" and then REALLY bad shit happens to the one's that don't let go.
The best example is right there on Dead Money: you have to let go of the gold bards. They are there to trick you into locking yourself in a self-destructing vault. You have to let go and accept it.
Elijah didn't. Elijah couldn't to be more precise. He HAD to go there, to BE there, he could not let go. And died.
Big Mountain were stuck on a loop because they had to forget even if forced to, but were unable to progress because lmao loop.
That tribal shit up north (that I didn't play too much) is all about past rivalries that condemn everyone to misery unless they accept that what happened, happened and that's it.
And then the game tops it of with Ulysses, the climax and culmination of the them. Ulysses just couldn't let go. He held his grudge for years, he lived and breathed the need to avenge his kin. And he dug up "giants of the past" to do so. It's all very symbolic and the "good ending" of the story, where you manage to convince him to let go of the past? He gives you his cape. The number #1 symbol of his grudge, of his vendetta and his quest.
He loses something that sheltered and protected him from the world, exposes himself to a new world where he can look to the future, live in the present and let go of the past.

You know, small indies experimenting with new stuff was always the main drive of the industry. The thing about indies that most of /v/ don't get is that you shouldn't expect to come here (or anywhere else for that matter) and expect everyone to like the same things you do. Videogames are either niche as fuck, or generalists. Niche games have small but very dedicated audiences (I loved playing "One Shot", but I'm probably one of the few thousand who did) while generalist games have large, but not very attached audiences (your yearly call of duty audience).
Vidya is very, very fine as long as you stick to things you like, or go search up new one's. If you stick to what you used to like, you'll watch it become popular, mainstream, mass-marketable and very, very dead in a short amount of time.
That's basically the story of Halo, Half-Life, Vampire the Masquerade, Deus Ex and other great /v/ classics.
Go ask /mu/ about it, they'll tell you the same thing happens to band. 4 stoners cook up some great tracks in their garage, go on to an amazing tour, realease a mind-blowing album some time later and then the producer wants a widermarket. Band goes to shit.

Then there's that whole bit about Squall being fucking dead after getting a fucking glacier of an ice spike shoved through his chest by Edea in Disc 1, and that's where the story afterwards goes fucking bonkers.
Squall even mentions afterwards that he has no fucking wounds from getting stabbed in the chest.
And Rinoa shifts her whole personality towards Squall.
Maybe he's dead, or maybe Rinoa's sorceress magic, on top of brainwashing him, linked his life to hers, so he can't really die or stay wounded for long. And the whole plot after getting stabbed in the chest is him percieving things far differently because his death and unnatural state of life is fucking with his head.
This game doesn't really deserve any of this shit, because it's likely just badly written, and all these threads appeared for different interpretations because the plot was constantly changed or something, and little bits of all the original plots stayed in the final version.
So shit would get set up in the first act and the team would look back and call it retarded, and switched over to a different plot in the next act. The whole game's fucking schizo to me.

The characters don't auto attack unless you have gambits on, Which are kind of shit, because you can basically program the game to be played for you. Are you talking about the loot system?
