Homeworld: Deserts of Kharak was launched to little fanfare and died an obscure death, and it's really a pity since it nails the Homeworld formula and combines it with great art direction (I love the unit design in this one), great music and VA.
The main drawbacks are that the AI is dumb as a brick outside of scripted scenarios and a lack of depth compared to the first Homeworld.

RTS being an unpopular genre is a big one. Then the fact the game really doesn't do anything new, it's a rather simplistic strategy game where the factions aren't all that different from each other, and it lacks the fully 3D "gimmick" the three previous Homeworld games had. Finally, the multiplayer isn't that good, and if people want to play a multiplayer RTS they have better choices.
They should have really just ignored the multiplayer altogether and focused solely on the single player campaign.

Any genre with a Blizzard game in it is pretty much a ghost town with maybe two exceptions outside of their crap because they actively censor and sabotage compeition. Also, before you say it, yes even newer RTS games compete with Blizzard's stuff because they're still selling it near full fucking price and still put out battlechests at retail. They're terrified of any new game getting even remotely popular.

Fair enough, but in this case there really was little meat to sink into. The game tries to create a distinction between the factions similar to what Ground Control had going (wheeled/tracked vs hover vehicles) but it's not really fleshed out, so you end up having two sides that are nearly identical.
And it's really a pity because the production values on everything else are top notch. The game evokes that Homeworld feeling, though it does feel a tad stale because it apes the first game so much. Both Cataclysm and 2 featured narratives that felt distinction from the original.

Many new RTS games coming out over emphasize unit balance on an individual basis and ignores the economy of your side. This creates a situation where everything looks almost exactly the same and plays the same. Even the rock paper scissor unit style leads to this result.
At some point you need to just fuck balance and give one side giant laser beams and the other flak cannons and worry about the consequences later.

>Wish more games had occult themes
Both Vampire games (Bloodlines and Redemption) are heavy on the occult. Keeping with the vampire theme, Nosferatu is an interesting FPS that almost feels like a rougelike. The gist is that you arrive at Dracula's castle and find out that all your family members have been abducted and if you don't get to them in time (the game has a timer) they'll get killed.
Clive Barker's Undying is a great little FPS with strong lovecraftian overtones that was one of the first games to introduce weapon/magic dual wielding. Blood, obviously, isn't unknown, but not many people know about Death Wish - likely one of the finest Build Engine mods out there.
As >>16308765 mentioned, Cultist Simulator is pretty fun, especially since it's all about being the bad guy in a lovecraftian story. This time you're the cult leader trying to summon some ungodly abomination from time and space.
Gabriel Knight games are all about investigating occult incidents and feature pretty good writing, though I never was a big fan of the live-action bits in the second game.
Shadow Man is a third person game heavy on the voodoo shit, so if you don't mind playing as a nigger you might try giving it a shot.

I'm talking classic Tomb Raider.
Forget Uncharted and nuRaider shit where the game practically plays itself as long as you press the analogue stick in the general direction toward the highlighted goal, classic TR had slow and deliberate controls that let you precisely manoeuver Lara once you had a handle on them, ironically allowing you greater control than modern games which require a lot of training wheels like autograb and shit.
And it had actual level design and puzzles and the combat was more about acrobatics and using Lara's athletic skill to keep her out of harm's way than duck-and-cover whack-a-mole with knee high walls.

"Dark Half" for snes, nip rpg with novel story and combat system, never released outside sushi land (fan translated); game is split between playing as the Lord of Evil who will bring about the apocalypse and the heir of the Holy Knights that imprisoned him who's mission is to destroy him. All movement on the world map and in dungeons/towns consumes soul energy, which results in game over when exhausted. Spells cast by the dark lord also consume soul energy. Soul energy can usually only be replenished by defeating monsters in combat, as well as through sucking the lifeforce out of defenseless people as the Dark Lord.
Each npc has more or less unique "death" dialogue before you suck their soul out (including women and children my stomach was too weak to not reload after doing this once and always avoid it afterward, but it really puts you in the shoes of the father of lies and author of death). Your time as the Holy Knight sees you adventuring with a typical fantasy party of companions while collecting gear/experience while often following in the footsteps of your rampage as the Dark Lord the night before. This is where their's interesting opportunities that can arise when you make the two "cooperate"; any people you spare will still be around the next day, and they might have some advice for you, also spells you cast as the dark lord can uncover valuable gear for your more noble protagonist. Gear is useless to the dark lord who powers up after battles with the original paladins who imprisoned him and learns spells through dominating the minds of monsters he fights to make them join his party.
Overall a pretty impressive effort that was apparently one of the last games the studio put out before it went under.

Do all RTS not have this?
419ea2 No.16320601
>>16320373
The line of sight here refers not to what you (player) see, but rather what the unit sees.
For example ranged units in AoE, C&C or Broodwar can fire at their target thru building or other obviously larger obstacles. It's a nice approach to simplify the logic of ballistic projectiles and streamline meta, but makes absolutely no sense unless the unit in question fire in a vertical arc like artillery. AE's approach is to define obstacles as entities that block your path and require to go around if you want to engage in a skirmish.
The reason why units aren't visually impaired by obstacles and can see enemies behind buildings or a forest, is probably to visualize the use of radar tech. You can spot enemies but require a clear line of sight in order to open fire at them. Same goes for your own units, they take friendly fire if they block each other.

Awful "spiritual" sequel to the absolute beast that was Total Annihilation. Combat is still just T1 spam on ground and orbital artillery spam for getting from one dead rock to the other. Naval doesn't really matter due to the scale, ends up as a resource sink early on, and T2-3 are easily beaten by numbers even very late into the game because of how versatile T1 ground/air options are so there's almost no point to them.
Titans don't really change this until the very, very late game when you can truly mass them, but by the same account a CORE player in TA could do the same with Krogoths so i don't see how this adds to the game.

Not necessarily rare games, but obscure games that had a decent amount of copies printed, but no-one seems to know about anymore. And it's not just him either, Super Nintendo games especially are an over-inflated market as is due to how many of these fags want to be "collectors." Real rare games are the ones no one gives a shit about because no one bought them or few were made. They're only valuable for their scarcity alone and nothing else. NES World Championships for example. "Rare" games are created by collector's and lack of resell, making it "rare" that you get your hands on a copy despite how many there are, because everyone wants to hold onto their copy. It's completely artificial.
These fags make money by convincing people of high value. They make sellers feel like they have a high value game on their hands so they end up selling it for high value. Then they make buyers feel like that game is worth the value it's placed it, so they'll buy it from the sellers at their ridiculously high prices. There's no standard or base value, no one prices it based on the enjoyment they had or what they themselves think the game is worth.
Makes me wish there were companies out there that printed reproduction cartridges so we didn't have this problem, and I doubt the Super Nintendo collector's economy bubble will pop anytime soon.
>>16318428
No, otherwise it'd be greentext. But I genuinely mean that. I've had games that seem be common knowledge be completely obscure or niche to other people.

Again, same schtick as last thread. I may not know a lot of true "hidden gems" but I'll be talking about games I see others rarely mention, but I myself enjoyed personally and which came as fairly obscure to me.
>Haunted Mansion
Despite the cover, it's not a movie tie-in or based on the movie. It's completely original and supposed to tie more-so to the actual story told within the ride. Some of the game can be extremely cheesy at times, but within it are excellent environmental puzzles. It plays like a sort of "reverse" Luigi's Mansion in the fact that combat is less prioritized, but rather the rooms and puzzle solving. To progress, you have to turn on the lights in each room to free friendly spirits trapped by dark magic within the mansion. This mechanic becomes fairly interesting as further and further into the game each room contains more bizarre, unique, and creative gimmicks to test your spacial awareness and problem solving abilities. Another classic horror-themed game to play around October. If you enjoyed Grabbed by the Ghoulies or Luigi's Mansion, I'm fairly certain you'll have a good time with this one.
>XIII
Everyone seems to know about "Killer7" at this point. Everyone talks about it, to me it's not as much of a "hidden gem" anymore like it might've been. And we have the internet now which helps us more than ever to find obscure cult classics. But there's a similar game in similar veins which seems to have gone fairly under the radar and which I have not seen mentioned anywhere on 8chan recently. That game being XIII (Thirteen). It's a fairly standard first-person-shooter with some stealth mixed in. But one of the draws to me was it's art style and top-notch level design, similar to Killer7. It also has a fairly gritty story again like Killer7, which made the game all the more engaging and fun to play. It's very much like playing an interactive comic book and sadly, I haven't seen very many games try similar approaches like this one has. It's an absolutely enthralling experience with an excellent example of how to use a video game to tell a story.

Yeah, the book is called Ring Runner: Derelict Dreams. I remember reading somewhere that the book was quite a read.

I played it on PS2 personally, no issues as far as I'm concerned. I haven't played the Xbox version and I rarely play all versions of a multiplat unless I'm told one is specifically better. You might be able to get by playing any version of it, unlike Killer7 where consensus reigns that the GameCube version is superior.

Dune 2 is considered one of the most groundbreaking games of all time. Even people who don't care about RTS have heard about it.

>Super Nintendo games especially are an over-inflated market as is due to how many of these fags want to be "collectors."
This shit caused me to not attempt to physically rebuild my childhood SNES collection. I would rather play on emulators than spend hundreds of dollars enriching some (((collector))). Sadly, the SNES classic mini didn't have enough "rare" games on it to fuck them over.
>Real rare games are the ones no one gives a shit about because no one bought them or few were made.
I bought Rule of Rose when it was new, and now somehow I own a "valuable" ps2 game.

I bought it used from (((Gamestop))) back in 2005. It definitely fits the definition of a hidden gem, and it's also got one of the best soundtracks from that era. It's a crime that this game isn't more popular.

XIII is mediocre dogshit, mostly thanks to AI that oscillates from being retarded to borderline precognizant. It's comic art style is literally it's only highlight, and if that's all you care about, then thanks for being the cancer killing vidya.

PC followed by Xbox. This best option of course is to play something else.

I take it you're an underage that's unaware PS2 versions of games were typically the worst ports of that generation.

Hijacking this half-dead thread.
I'm trying to remember a shovelware citybuilder game I got in the mid-2000s.
- It was CD-ROM based
- Isometric view, fairly poor graphics from what I remember, around Simcity 2000's level but with smaller pixels
- Basic housing were tents similar to Caesar
- Had a campaign mode and a challenge mode
- The first challenge mode mission was getting a certain population, but the catch was you only had a tiny playable area (5x6 I think) so it was more like a puzzle where you had to arrange tents and roads until you fit enough in the space provided
- Might have had a resource management system also like Caesar

populous the beginning? not exactly obscure (molyneux franchise) but seldom discussed and the only RTS I could ever get into.
It feels like an RPG or puzzle game in some ways so I found it way more interesting than 'pure' rts games.
still has an active community of third-world spic retards playing in internet cafes.
I've been meaning to play magic carpet, but don't if there is much depth to it.
Also, remember Elastomania?
I might be wrong but I'm sure this invented the genre a couple years before the flash clones became super popular.

In this line of thought I'd like to recommend Heretic 2, which combines the acrobatic Tomb Raider movements with magical weaponry and a pretty neat melee combat system(for the time, it's basically the super early proto Jedi Academy).

Elastomania was made after Action SuperCross, Wikipedia says it's a sequel. The earlier game was frequently installed on computers here as part of freely copied DOS games.
