I've only played Sakura Taisen V, and it plays like a visual novel where each chapter is punctuated by Valkyria Chronicles type battles. You have a pool of action points you use to move around the field to get into strategic positions and attack enemies. From what I hear, alot of the VC development team came from the Sakura Wars series.

Music and art direction were fantastic, the story was alright - but even out of context, I'm willing to bet it's the weakest in the series. Not sure if any of the previous ones ever got translated for US/EU releases though. I'm sure there's some fan translation patches floating around.

I ended up dating Cheiron Archer. She's actually pretty nice looking with her hair down, and she's comically stereotypical on some points. She cooks you fried chicken as a special dinner, uses whips as a weapon, sings in a Harlem gospel choir, only became a lawyer to help her friends in the hood with their legal issues, and your date with her involves breaking & entering/trespassing. She also breaks a lot of stereotypes, but she revels in enough of them that I don't think there's any way she'd be allowed to exist in a current-year game.

The anime's fine but it's more of a retelling than an addition to the games. There are some changes (Iris is all moody and shit, and Kayama does his ninja stuff on-screen instead of in the background), so it's nice but not necessary. It does help that it's been translated, so that makes playing the games easier for non-Japanese speakers.

It would be better if they re-released the previous games with English translation (especially the PS2 remake of the first game).

Sadly, Sakura Taisen V was the only one translated. Though, props to the translators, they actually included and translated all the easter egg scenes that only occured if you had save data from the previous games. I was pleasantly surprised when I visited Gemini Sunrise in her apartment and the game recognized my Japanese Episode Zero save and gave me an extra scene.

The Sakura Wars Project fell on the wayside because Sega was insane enough to think after the Dreamcast, they could still do the same song and dance number even though the franchise was on it's apex during the early 2000s, after Sakura Wars V, they quit, that game was too little too late, three of the remaining games cancelled, and we had almost 15 years of nothing but crossover crap till this new one.
