Mesoamerica was pretty damn huge and influential by the time Europeans showed up. What probably held them back was the fact that gunpowder literally did not exist in the New World so they were all stuck using spears and bow and arrows. If the Aztecs discovered gunpowder its not inconceivable they could've taken full control over the entire region as well as North America and have built something more comparable to Europe at the time

Gunpowder didn't exist in Europe either until it was brought over by the Mongols from China around the 13th century, yet Europe was far ahead of Mesoamerica by that point. Pre-Columbian American civilizations were about as good as you could do with stone age technology, but it was still stone age technology. They never advanced beyond that. They never developed a real writing system and they never got the idea to use metal for anything practical despite being at least somewhat familiar with metallurgy.

If the resident expert is still here, I would like to hear about mesoamerican agriculture. I heard it might have been better than what Europeans had. As a hint for that, they had corn/maize, potato, cacao, those are clearly not random jungle grasses. I heard they used raised beds between irrigation channels. All that without wheels or beasts of burden, so raw manpower fed by what they cultivated. Seems they had actual agriculture instead of just picking fruits from the jungle like niggers.
Actually, it seems like they had it good, and European migrants wanted their land, plants, and resources without integrating into the local culture. Sounds familiar.
