My 10 year old Dualshock 3 finally died on me yesterday. I'm tempted to get a Steam Controller, but I've heard they feel cheap and the touchpads aren't exactly my preference, but I could see getting used to them. The other option is the DS4, I've used it quite a bit playing Bloodborne on my roommate's nogamestation; it feels pretty good but there's something not quite right about it. Used / refurbished DS3s seem to be shitty and expensive. I've used the classic $20 Logitech controller before but the dpad sucks ass. Xbawks controllers are trash. What do?

aa10f7  No.16305160

Dualshock 3 is the flimsiest piece of shit controller of the Playstation family. Both of mine don't work properly anymore as any slightest touch at them will send them into a frenzy of random button presses (because they're handled by a piece of shit floating plastic with contacts in the middle that connects with a floating circuit board).

Baxtros does some fairly good refurbs of DS3 if you don't want to change anything.

Steam controller is hit or miss, some people love it I didn't, I prefer the DS4 to it

DS4 can be really good if you mod it with separated Dpad buttons in some cases.

Genesis P65 / Gamesir G3w / Hori Mini DS4 / Zhidong ZD-V+ if you're cheap and just want something that's not entirely terrible without paying a fortune

EDGE-301, for the contrarians, like myself, great if you don't need triggers and a good Dpad, very easy to keep in good shape and repair too, easily the longest lasting controller I've had, 5 years and counting of occasional use

x360/Xbone I don't like the layout and they have some weird quality issues sometimes so I can't really recommend them especially since I tend to like using Dpads.

WiiU Pro is definitely good if you need wireless with insane battery life

Haven't tested the Switch Pro controller, heard it's good

>>16305249

>Anyone have it?

Yeah, it has fairly sticky button that are pretty deep so mashing is horrible, the ergonomic side isn't particularly great since you're rub against the elevated stick area a lot, no trigger, it's really just good for the price since everything else I can think of outside of the ones I named aboe is worse.

1. Buy a new DS3. You can still get them brand new unopened.

2. Get an Xbone controller model number 1708.

I had a launch model (15XX) and it was complete garbage, but I haven't had a problem with the newest model.

It has bluetooth built in so you don't need to rely on a cord or the Microsoft wireless adapter.

3. Try an 8bitdo SF30 Pro. The layout is the same as the PS controller, but it's a bit smaller and doesn't have handles.

There is a newer model, the SF30 Pro Plus, coming out later this year that has handles and larger shoulder buttons.

4. The Steam controller is dogshit, which is a shame. With a few tweaks and modularity it could be the A++ of controllers, but as it is unless you're playing a turn-based mouse-driven strategy game like Thea you're better off with a real controller.

5. Man up and play real games as they're meant to be played. In 8-bit with a dogbone controller.

Try applying lateral pressure to the 360 d-pad in a 2D game and see how far that gets you. The stick the d-pad rests on will tilt and the plastic hat will hit the side of the housing before any input is registered.

Keep in mind that it might not even be a real Dualshock 3, fake low quality controllers not made to last take up most of the market now and have for quite awhile and it's near impossible to tell from its exterior, you would be hard pressed to find a legitimate Dualshock 3 these days. That's why it's probably best to buy a Dualshock 4 as they're available new and from official sources. I have my uncles Dualshock 3 from when he bought the PS3 new and it's the most solid controller I've ever had the joy of owning and has lasted me years, but I might try the DS4 so I don't need to use 3rd party drivers like SCP (made by a Brony who probably uses the software to spy on your webcam while you stroke it) to use it on Windows.

Also, Switch Pro is the best controller, its only downside is not having analog triggers. Except barely any games actually use analog triggers nowadays, evidenced by DS2 AND DS3 BOTH HAVING EVERY BUTTON BE ANALOG YET ONLY A HANDFUL OF GAMES ACTUALLY USED THAT WHAT THE FUCK

Analog input was the most promising mechanic which has all but disappeared. I still keep a DS3 around for when I want to play Ace Combat or MGS3, but that's about it in terms of real analog mechanics. Oh well, who knew most devs were dumb idiots who can't think up good uses of the controller.

As a controller it works great, but the seemingly terrible reliability (saw many other comments on Amazon about controllers failing within a few months) paired with the high replacement cost makes it seem like it was a bad choice.

Xbox One controllers seem decent enough quality from what I've seen, though I use a DS4 on my PC because I don't really play my PS4 much these days thanks to Sony's censorship. Use a version of DS4Windows to emulate a 360 pad (since a lot of games still support/only support that pad), and you can use the track-pad as a mouse, which is handy when you're on the couch and don't want to reach up to the coffee table for the mouse.

Here's the thing, arcade sticks are godlike for your wrists (some people think four buttons is more ergonomic but really you need to tent the buttons and that fucks up some techniques like using both your thumbs to press down), if you hold the stick right your wrist is vertically aligned and you use your forearm to move around and you have a bit more freedom and flexibility to tackling specific movements as well.

The d-pad is utter garbage. It is useless for 2D games unless you use the "sandpaper mod".

The sandpaper mod is literally unscrewing the d-pad and grinding it down with sandpaper so that it's small enough that when you tilt the stick (because for some fucking reason the d-pad is on a stick instead of pivoting on a ball-bearing) it doesn't hit the housing before registering input from lateral movements.

Fucking kids don't even play the superior 2D and use this piece of garbage controller thinking it's fine. Jesus fuck what a travesty, no wonder our culture is going down the toilet.

>You can order them off the internet for like 10/20 dollars if you get one of those that come with a blank spot where the logo is supposed to be, no difference except there's no exterior mention of Microsoft

Aren't these low-quality chink replicas that will start breaking down in less than 6 months of use?

Is Microsoft even still manufacturing Xbox 360 wired controllers? Where I live I haven't seen one of these for sale in many years, only the wireless version.

While I agree with all the issues you mentioned, they're not exclusive to the Xbox 360 controller.

>shit d-pad

>convex buttons

>shit bumpers

Almost all modern controllers have all of these problems, sadly. The DS4 d-pad for example is a bit less shitty but not by much.

I built a copy of the NES pad for my 7800, so it's my de-facto Atari system controller from here on out. Alas, the guy selling the boards for inserting into the NES controller shells shut down his Etsy store right after I and a couple friends bought one each. I would like to have gotten more than just the one, but ah well. Annoying that I can't even find the controller shell and button parts anymore, even on sites like AliEx and ebay.

My XE GS is in tolerable condition (had to paint it because it was sun-browned, before Retr0brite was a thing), but I can't use BASIC on it. When I press RETURN after typing anything, or even before typing, it locks up. The return key responds fine in the keyboard test of the diagnostic system, so I think the BASIC ROM may be fucked? No one else has ever reported this problem. Just the same, I don't have any games for it beyond the built-in Missile Command, my controller has no stick (snapped completely off, don't feel like spending $13 to get a new kit), and I don't have the gun.

I have one of these because all of my original 360 controllers were stolen, and the rubber coating of the analog sticks on a Pelican wired pad I bought when the 360 had first come out had melted completely off of the controller while it was in storage. Jesus. It works fine with a 360, but I prefer using a Dual Shock 4 on my computer, if doing anything with a gamepad that needs analog controls. My Dual Shock 2s are in perfect shape, but the sticks are a bit rigid in comparison.

I've got some stupid SNES clone pad for PS3 with no analog sticks, with 6 face buttons, so it's good for 2D and fighting games, I suppose, but I hate using it.

Try one of the Speedlink gamepads…
