Solidus wasn't evil. He was just being played like a fiddle by the Patriots the whole time. I believe he had tried to join them with the whole Shadow Moses incident, but that went south and then he wanted to wreck their shit. Unfortunately for him, Solidus is no Ocelot. Ocelot was the only one in the series capable of removing the Patriot system and he did by baiting Snake.

This is the most likely reason. Solidus wanted child soldiers who would do his bidding. He didn't need anyone's parents and he thus cut them out of the equation.

Solidus was the President of the US during MGS1. He tried to go bigtime like President Johnson did during MGS2. The Patriots wanted a Snake that they could control, so they built one. The Big Shell Incident was their final training ground, but then the real Snake showed up and things went tits up for their plan. Solidus was another pawn in the end and the major reason why he was never going to succeed is that he never had Ocelot on his side. The real Big Boss was frozen somewhere and Solidus got used for parts to help bring him back in MGS4.

It's fantasy, so a lot of the major characters are going to be related somehow. They'll either be literally related or know of each other. A lot of backstory was implied back in MGS1. Master Miller didn't get fleshed out until PW. Even back in MG1 and MG2, the only thing we know about Fox is that he was capture by BB. He was largely portrayed as another grunt until he became the cyborg ninja in MGS1. I don't think his sister Naomi was ever brought up until then as well and then that wasn't fleshed out until PO and MGS4. What I'm getting at is that the games are pretty vague and leave a lot of room for filling later. Solidus easily could have shown up in MGSV. I wouldn't say they are necessarily retconning anything, but that they are just filling in the gaps that they intentionally put in the story.

Prior to Revengeance, he hated that he was a child soldier. I'm sure he would have felt the same way regardless of who he was killing on the battlefield. His bloodlust was hinted at by Solidus, and that's probably why he liked him so much.

I think Ocelot is the only character to consistently stay ahead of the curve. Boss knew that she was sent on a suicide mission, but she couldn't do anything about it. BB got used by Zero on numerous occasions. Snake got used by everyone. Eva just wanted to carry BB's kids, but he couldn't do it as his nuts got irradiated. I think she was just being used by the Chinese though. I don't know when Zero became aware of the Philosophers, but he did create the Patriots along with pretty much everyone else that was involved in Snake Eater. Outside of the player controlling the various Snakes, the whole story is pretty much about Ocelot. He was the reason Boss was forced to work for the Philosophers and the reason Snake's story gets set into motion. He helps the various Snakes over the years from BB, who he more than likely saw as a father figure to Solid Snake, who he saw as a brother and rival.
