7drl is actually great. They actually try to make roguelikes that are fun. In most cases devs simply forget that game was supposed to be fun and not complexity for the sake of complexity. For example most of dcss feels like grinding and not like adventure. You have to assigng skills at start of the game, pick some shit, early levels are meaningless, food is meaningless in 90% of situations (even if you play as someone with high metabolism). Instead of removing features they could add campsite for cooking and resting.

I have much more fun when I chop wood in unreal world and you would not believe how much fun I have when I play doomrl. I have to pay attention to many things when I simply chop wood than when I am killing mobs in dcss. And mobs are retarded. Why cant they implement smart AI from sil? Everything is so fucking dull. Imagine if monsters tried to ambush you or stalk you or do anything besides their equivalent of tab+o. As far as I remember they dont even try to run away when almost dead.

And why people lose in it? Because they got bored and stopped paying attention.

I dont know how other experience it, but in cata dda(after 1st week) I usually die because I decide to do something stupid but fun. Or bleed from wolfs.

The best experience I had with roguelikes was probably actually Nethack on a DS flashcart. Being able to bind things to buttons but also pull up a list of all commands on the touchscreen with L was 10/10. Touchscreens by themselves suck but it was such a perfect handheld marriage with the bindable buttons.

I just made a bunch of shelters on my travels but now every time I take twigs from trees I just get branches, I try to make a shelter like I always do and it tells me it needs spruce twigs, not branches, even if I have a stock of 70 that could serve to make a rudimentary home

In this case pines I guess are too high to get to the needles easily, but there are branches lower down that can be reached. Could also be related to Finnish traditions or something, though there are certainly some arbitrary design decisions in the game, like not being able to make cordage from plant material.

is there a way to get back a rope after making it into a loop snare? I was short on tying stuff for smoking and I had to resort to buying a shirt and tearing it apart for cord

i didn't mean plot, but more like setting, there are run of the mill skellies, no good atmosphere or unique feeling like all other roguelikes have or some kind of lore. but game is good tho, it was the first rogue which I stuck to for a little time

man dogs are really fucking useful

say hi to Spring and Snow, they took out two Njerpez so far while I peppered them from a short distance with arrows, I was worried about the last one because he had lamellar armor but he ended up being a total pushover, it also helped that I nailed him in the neck before he had a chance to detect me.

Im steadily working myself up to a full set of armor, so far I bought a battleaxe, a shield and a spectacle helm, hopefully I will be able to afford a mail hauberk if I nail a couple more commies.

Cataclysm DDA is my go-to these days. The shit is always fun and you can ramp up the difficulty with world-gen and zombie settings as you get better; plus it's open source. Don't @ me about dildoes and SJW's, i'm not interested.

Cata is good despite the head dev being a massive tool, helps that they really haven't added much of note in years and modding allows bad decisions to be reversed or excluded. The crafting and survival aspect is top-notch, being free to build a cabin in the woods and thrive or build a turreted deathmobile from an abandoned meth lab fills a niche that nobody else has.

got one, no one is gonna nail ME on the neck thats for sure

all I need is some mail mittens, some actual forearms guards, and mail leggings and I will have a working set of armor

I nailed 5 Njerpez so far, the last one I dispatched myself left my dogs at camp so they could recuperate from some nasty deer wounds

I got him on the leg and after a short tussle with shield and mace I had to stop risking it and just shoot at him while maintaining my distance, he had his shield in high position so all my shots went to his thighsby the end he was crawling after, me fueled by nothing but pure barbarian rage

he eventually bled to death after I put enough broadheads on him to kill a bear

I got off easy, I ended up with nothing but a minor puncture on the leg and a bruise on the shoulder, next time I wont be so eager to get within melee range

Im starting to think they know somebody is fucking with them in this area, either that or they have a camp somewhere, there is a weird gap cutting two chunks of the Diirk sphere of influence but I dont see any hostile settlements nearby or Njerpez influence
