SUPER FUCKING METROID BABY
On March 19th 1994 Super Metroid was released in Japan for the Super Famicom. Following mediocre sales in Japan, the game was a big hit in over in the west. Being available on the Wii U and the 3DS nowadays - or the internet if you aren't an idiot - the game is still sold and played to this day. Today, Super Metroid celebrates her 25th birthday.
So, what are you playing? Vanilla? Romhack? On original hardware, or emulating? Any specific category/route or goals you have for yourself?
Another game, perhaps? Maybe ZM or Prime? First time player or played every game?
Looking forward to Prime 4? What are you expecting? Any opinions on the development switch?
Do you like Metroid beyond the game? Have any merch or do you make art or music of the series?
Still playing AM2R? Fan patches applied? Hope for any more fangames? Super Paper Metroid?
Let's celebrate SM's birthday and have a thread about Metroid. I'll post some art, wallpapers and scores later.
Also,

ade050 No.16262664
For me: yesterday, I completed an any% run, having 71% items with an ingame time of 2:24. Today I am gonna 100% the file like I nearly always do. I am hoping to get 100% sub 3:00 sometimes, and my ultimate goals would be reverse boss order. That route is so cool but so fucking difficult, it really draws my interest. I play on a super comfy PVM setup, PAL however. Probably going to mod my SNES to add a toggle switch to play at 60 Hz.
Played Return of Samus last week and I am starting to love that game as well. Barebones as fuck, and really limited by the Gameboy, but has a great atmosphere. Great stuff. Still need to play P3 (and OM to be honest), but played the rest. Could rank them sometimes soon.
Honestly, I have no idea what to expect from Prime 4. I don't have a Switch yet, but I might start considering it if homebrew and CFW takes off. The thing seems like an amazing emulation station, since it will probably run nearly everything I play anyways. I hope Retro realizes that the formula P1&P2 set were very good, and very little has to change from that formula. I just hope they take note from SM/ZM in the open-endedness, so more ways to play and replay the game would be amazing.
Super Metroid is my favorite game, period. I love the atmosphere and gameplay, the music, the movement and the story. I have two shirts from the series, one with Samus' her helmet, and another one where she is posing without her helmet with her gunship in the background. Otherwise; I play piano and can currently play the Item Fanfare, Lower Norfair/Magmoor Caverns, Kraid's lair and SR-388 from AM2R. I have some other songs I could learn, but I have other sheets I am learning right now.
AM2R is probably my second favorite game after SM; shows how much fans cared for the series. Had some contact with one of the composers about the piano piece I was playing, nice dude. The reason I talk about Paper Metroid, is because I have had the idea for quite a while now. I can into code pretty well, not into drawing however. Paper Metroid would probably one of the best fangames ever. Plenty of possibilities too, like a Ridley that evolves to Mega-Ridley, Super-Mega-Ridley, Super-Mega-Meta-Ridley etc. etc., and the space pirates acting like in the comics, being obsessed with tubes and having to move from places in the tube factory. Having companions would be super cool too, like the baby, Adam or a Federation Trooper.

The best pin-up is her show from the back, armorless after surviving her ship's crash, looking at the pirates' base. I like that feeling of "not only it's not over yet, but now I am defenseless. This is impossible." before going full stealth.
I'm finishing Prime3 now. Second time I play it. Once again I missed some scans at the very beginning of the game and there's no coming back. I'm using the Trilogy version, next time I'll use that downlodable savefile (SD card) that gives you the 15 green tokens that you need to unlock everything. Who the hell thought it was a good idea to unlock so much stuff after interacting online? This wasn't a multiplayer game.
I also keep fond memories of the original Metroid II, the metroid encounters, the (lack of) music… the loneliness…

To some degree. I appreciated that on Crateria with the big open empty areas and sandstorms. Gave an actually decent impression of the surface of a crater-covered body in space. I haven't gotten far yet, though, so I can't comment much on the other areas. I only just got to Brinstar.
> felt very linear like you're supposed to go down a passage until you hit the end, explore a bit, find the secret, and then continue on. It's very formulaic
That's disappointing if true. There has been a decent amount of back and forth at the beginning, but the original also started out like that before opening up. If this one is really just "run down this corridor until you can't anymore, then go back where you came from, and repeat until game is done", I probably won't finish it.

Most of the colors are fine. Samus being blue and yellow is a little distracting, given that her colorschemes are usually a little more unified. I'm still waiting to hit Varia suit.
> Yeah, but there were plenty of rooms to explore.
I'm happy enough with the "large and filler" as long as it doesn't get repetitive or over-the-top. The game is about exploring underground caves on a desolate planet, and I want that desolate feeling.
The movement tech is actually used to an interesting degree in this game. Moving through Brinstar and Crateria, there is a number of locations that let you put in some effort to bypass a longer route.
So far, I'm happy with Hyper Metroid. I'll probably play this one through and then finally go back and finish Rogue Dawn, because I never played that one out.

The idea is more for playing a different playstyle as Samus's mutant loli clone who uses her own power suit. The "Syphon Suit" uses the same technology as the Fusion Suit except it's engineered to harness Metroid bioenergy. On one hand the armor is lighter and weaker than the Power Suit. It sacrifices armor for agility and more advanced acrobatics. On the other hand the Syphon Suit uses a Nanocell Energy Syphon (NES) system which can harness bioenergy extracted from enemies or yourself.
You have a sub-tank that pools energy from enemies you stab via Talon Fang, a spear on your gun arm. Your sub-tank is similar to Aeon, but not useless. You can extract energy from stunned enemies or you can sacrifice energy to overload them which can sometimes create walking bombs or fuel machines. You can also overcharge your beam to make a Hyper Beam and other weapons. At the same time your energy can be used to enhance mobility systems. You can do a mini Shinespark by pressing zR during a space jump or dash to instantly change monentum in any direction you want. It's also useful for split second dodging or closing in with melee. You can extract your own energy tank one at a time to reload a sub-tank. You can also draw power from the sub-tank to recover your main energy supply and even replenish ammo with the right upgrade. Debating if this suit is going to have a Morph Ball mode or not. Morph Ball mode can create an energy cocoon via sub-tank to tank almost anything at the expense of not being able to move. This will lead to some pinball moments for sure.. You can also release the cocoon just when you take the hit to retaliate via energy burst that nukes a quarter of the screen. Also 2D Spider Ball is back.
The suit will have a Varia form, Gravity Boost, and Hazard Shield.

It's not that underwater sections are bad, it's the fact that developers think the only way to do them is to fuck with your movement.

I think as long as you eventually get equipment to breeze through the water it's fine for the water to limit you temporarily.

Quick translation from a non-native German speaker:
> Sector 1: Crateria
> Info data 001: Crateria lays under a constant rain of corrosive acid. Only with the use of her biomechanical protective suit can the fighter Samus Aran leave her spaceship and begin her mission… End of data (for some reason this part is in English)
> Brinstar: The jungle maze commands a thick and distinctive vegetation that many creatures have evolved in and adapted to for hundreds of years.
> Norfair: Deep under the surface of Zebes is the difficult-to-find Norfair. Glowing masses of stone and lava seas makes in impossible to intrude in many of the zones by the unprotected.
> Wrecked ship: Wrecked ship, the stranded spaceship of a very old lost civilization, serves as a hideout for the aliens of Mother Brain. The entangled paths are perfect for building pitfalls and ambushes.
> Maridia: Maridia is the water sector of Zebes. The land creatures of the planet have adapted over the years to the changed conditions in this place. Some of the creatures shoot out poisonous secretions…
Part 6 is missing
> Secret paths: The following pages show the mazes of all sectors with secret paths, objects, and passages. Even so, you should only look for a short time at the maps in an emergency.

I still got AM2R installed, might go through that again. Great game, glad it made it out into the wild before Nintendo got their hands on it. That said, I also need to finish the official remake of 2.

It's not official, it's a high-quality fan comic. Weavel is a Space Pirate who Samus maimed on Zebes, he doesn't have legs and can detach his torso from his robotic ones.

They are not official at all. Artist is kichin yarou (or marsspider) and I think those doujins are about a decade old.
My favorite comics are the ones where the Space Pirates are ogling and lusting after Power Suit Samus, only to be shocked and disgusted at seeing the human under the power armor and realizing that suit is not actually Samus. Pic #2 the space pirates capture nude Samus in order to finally get the young Space Pirates idolizing her to stop when they see it.
