He's a businessman and mostly a good one, started making a lot of mistakes because he took the microsoft FUD shilling really hard during the 7th gen but found himself in a very prominent position at capcom, very influential. Journos often miscredited him as the father of mega man and he exploited that to his interest, as most business men do. Whenever an article about how Japan is no longer relevant in gaming would be around they would make sure to tack the title "father of mega man" as the source. In the 7th gen Microsoft ramped up a FUD campaign to shoe horn the control of the industry to prominent Western studios, it worked for a while but what we're seeing today is the remains of it while Japan is recovering. Inafune was a primary force in this campaign often expressing his failures as a leader in Capcom as a problem for the entire Japanese industry, obviously this hit everyone pretty hard and was tough for morale both outside and especially inside of Capcom.

After making a few Western focused titles like Dead Rising and Lost Planet they decided it would be best to outsource development of future installments despite them being very good games because of their Japanese touches. Obviously this outsourcing was an utter mess but just as Inafune's plan started to really roll out he ducked out of Capcom, Capcom was left with a dead end MML3 project with no director, a ton of contracts they had already spent money on and obviously had no choice but to fulfill and the little businessman got away with a few flop corporations he keeps trying to run like Western businesses, as well as a funny Kickstarter story to tie it all together.

Game didn't get funded; anime short just barely did. They had the gall to announce that they already had a publisher/funding in Fuze and that the Kickstarter was just for extra money, and the kickstarter goals were just parts of a completed game. All of this was before Mighty No. 9 came out while it was getting delayed a million times.

Developers are Level-5 (which bought Comcept) and HYDE Inc (I'm pretty sure all they've done is uncredited work for other companies and a mobile game).

MN9 was the last kickstarter / preorder I ever did. I Refuse to back anything early-access again. What was funny about this entire process, the turning point was when MN9 team announced the game would be delayed b/c they wanted to launch on additional platforms as well. When they said 3DS, people began to sweat. There's no way any PC/Xbox/PS3 game would function on the 3DS.

And look what we received. Indie game tier environments that were bland and simple as fuck. The "cutscenes" (if you could call them that) were as basic as they could have done. I'm a /3/ guy— trust me, I looked at the vertices. IMVU had more complexity than MN9.

Also, as to "why" he was doing what he did– he was a businessman first and foremost. He was creating a revenue cycle from an IP that he assumed would be a hit. This is what investors look for when buying businesses. He really went big for trying to do figurines, animation, spin-offs all at the same time. The shame of it, if he would have had his team finish the launch product for PC first, sell it, then worried about the additional platforms and spinoff stuff next; the game wouldn't have suffered as much. The concept PC footage looked waaay better than what was delivered. Reeks of "this stage isn't working on Platform Y, cut it"

We were warned… "he's a businessman, not a creator" was absolutely correct.

The worst part is, as a business venture, Mighty No 9 was probably considered a big success. Inafune got all the money upfront - and looking at the game we ended up getting, very likely spent very little on it. The largest part of the budget was probably the star-studded Japanese voice cast.

Of course, there's the little side-effect of it devastating Kickstarter - I don't think an event like MN9 could ever happen again, most of the backers were probably soured on crowdfunding forever. But Inafune already had his money and attracted those sweet Chinese investor dollars.
