Here's all valve had to do when making artifact:

It was an okay game. Campaign was fun to play and reasonably challenging for early days of FPS. It had decent gunplay and spawned a lot of great mods. I never got why anyone raved about it as an amazing game or a terrible game. It's just okay.
2 was pretty similar. Not as many mods because all the best mods from HL1 became their own game by then. But we did get a nice SP campaign, TF2 and Portal. Too bad that we also got TF2 and Portal's fanbases.

Reminder that valve has never made a good game since 1998, HL1 is the only good game that they ever made and even still it has flawed and limited gameplay that didn't scale because of all of the hitscan enemies, the multiplayer is a lot better. The only good parts of valves games were the parts directly influenced by iD software and everything else was irredeemable trash. Valve designs their games around compensating for a lack of gameplay (this is very evident in HL2), they are totally unable to create anything of value. All of the cancerous game tropes and business practices that we see today were all PIONEERED by valve. Valve will never make anything of value ever again as it hasn't in literally 20 years, there is nothing to be hopeful for, besides any future valve games NOT coming out.

Timesplitters was what First Person Shooters should've been.
Fast and with lots of action. Also have a bunch of fun goodies to the side like multiplayer and really weird and odd characters to choose from (like the duck or the calamari). As well as the "cheat" codes such as the big heads. It's a shame that the series never got some sort of HD port with online support. I still play it now and then but it's just not the same without your old buddies from elementary or middle school.

It has no enemies that react to environment cues (sound, eating corpses etc)
Its levels are LINEAR while HL1 has practically interconnected design, where you travel these places where you can go literally anywhere and backtrack at times, levels are design as places instead of linear sections, whole Black Mesa could be pictured as one place that got cut apart because of limitations

There really isn't much wrong with Half-Life 1 other than it signalled to greedy suits (or rather, they mistakenly interpreted) that forcing the player to wait in-game for cutscenes disguised as setpieces is the coolest shit ever. It offered one of the best modding and multiplayer scenes in vidya.
