CRT Question Anonymous 03/16/19 (Sat) 19:22:07 2bc735 No.16253340
Since I know there's at least one CRT fag here.
I inherited a pretty good CRT TV, but I noticed some distortion on the edges, especially the top-left corner. Is that normal or is it busted?

degauss and see if that works

I don't know how, there's no menu option for it.

It's normal for aging capacitors. If you're handy with an iron and know basic safety practices it would be a project for a few hours to recap it. If it doesn't bother you too much it's definitely not the worst I've seen.

Oh that sucks. I definitely not comfortable with taking apart a CRT, so I guess I can just deal with it.

You can buy/rent a degaussing gun. Looks like a ring with a pistol grip, usually. Just don't use it near any magnetic tape. Maybe call a repair shop to see if they want to do it cheap, if any still exist in your area. All of mine are long dead. That minor bit of distortion is something that can be easily ignored, though.

The colors are fine, it just has geometry issues. Not even severe ones

If you can't find a repair shop, ask at a hospital where they service their screens. Some of those companies still work with CRTs.

You won't have to touch the electron gun, you'll just have to swap a few through-hole components. I seriously doubt there are any smd caps anywhere near the electron gun.

This often happens to Flat CRTs, i don't think it is correctable unless you had access to some special menu codes that Sony had for their service team, which are now long lost or arkane knowledge

Dying capacitor that's controlling geometry in that one corner.

Do they really die that fast? This TV is probably only like 10-20 years old.

Yes. Also if you don't get those replaced soon-ish, they might leak and cause permanent damage.

since I don't know where/when I'll be able to ask this again
I have a CRT that's starting to get discoloring along the bottom corners (reds show up as green, greens as blue, blues as red). Any way to fix this?
