By all intents and purposes, the Persona games (3, 4, & 5) look and play like Rated T games for teenagers. Despite the Rated M labels on their boxes, none of their content really screams out "only for Adults". No overt examples of gore or sex scenes to take note of. You know. Stuff that typically launches a game into Rated M territory. Honestly, their overall aesthetic and target audience seems more geared towards teens than adults.

And then it got me thinking. What if devs started making more games like that? They could just make games without giving a damn on whether it gets a certain age rating or not. When devs go for a Rated E rating, they self-censor their game's content to be suitable for kids. When devs go for a Rated T rating, again, they self-censor their games and remove any adult material too risque for teens. Leading devs to dumbing down their stories/dialogue to fit a certain demographic, whereas an Rated M rating could've given them more freedom to approach such topics that neither an Rated E or T rating would've allow.

The thing that Persona devs seem to do is to "attempt" to create a Teen-looking game, but they don't really give a shit what rating they're gonna get in the end. As such, their teenaged characters feel more like realistic teens as a result. Especially when they're grappling with adult subject matters like murder, alcoholic dads, or getting raped at school. Or cursing like a sailor when they get angry. Like take the villains in Kingdom Hearts for example. They never curse at you. They just lamely threaten to extinguish your "light" with their "darkness", because the writers have to pull punches in regards to using any "adult" insults. Now take a look at the villain in Persona 4. The dude just straight up calls women "worthless bitches" and one of the protags keeps calling him an "asshole" or "bastard". That's much more believable writing imo than Any Rated T game.

Before devs today became so focused on getting a certain rating, there were often villains in old games that crossed the line many times. Final Fantasy 6, a game that looks kid friendly on the surface, even had a villain that poisoned a child to death and you see how the father reacts in grief. It moments like those that you don't see in Rated E games anymore.

The reason why you, an adult, find the dialogue/content in modern Rated E & T games as childish is because the writers have to dumb it down to fit a certain rating. I'm just arguing that if a dev sends their game to be reviewed by rating board, they should just accept whatever rating they get. If they were hoping to get T rating but the board gives it an M rating, they shouldn't have to go back and censor the content to fit a T. The dialogue and/or cut content usually suffer from such self-censorship.

The whole Teen and Mature ratings seem to not hold much meeting anymore as there is such an overlap of the two.

8c9b47  No.16251762

Holy shit what a giant load of autism to say absolutely nothing.

and you've got it backwards. NuPersona devs didn't set out to make a 'teen friendly' game without considering the consequences, they set out to make a persona game teen friendly, and largely succeeded if not for the meddling of those pesky competent developers and writers still hanging on to atlus at that point.

> Like take the villains in Kingdom Hearts

You really think two mega-corps like squuenix and (((disney))) are going to take even the mildest risks when it comes to potentially reducing their consumer base and in turn profits? Frankly I assumed those games were G rated or something anyway.

>Holy shit what a giant load of autism to say absolutely nothing.

Honestly, even I wasn't sure where I was going with this. I just started typing and didn't stop. All I knew was that devs should stop feeling like they're being held at gunpoint by rating boards and should just create the stories they want. As is.

If they actively self-censor their games to fit an arbitrary age rating, I just ask why couldn't they just settled for whatever rating they get? It's not like Persona's popularity took a hit for having Rated M games. And plus, Persona's devs/writers also got to tell the stories with mature themes that they wanted to tell, thanks to the freedom that the M rating offers over the more limited T rating.

Unfortunately I'm going to have thoroughly undermine your argument about nupersona with a single piece of evidence:

>CERO:B

Inicidentally pretty much the only cunt-ries that gave it higher than a teen rating were burgerland, aus"nanny state"'straya and some nordic countries where kids kill themselves every winter because lmao no vitamin D and they don't want no taiwanese traditional puppet theatre games making it worse. At best you might be able to argue that translators were more free to act, but we all know what the first thing on a translator's mind is (tip: it's not creative freedom).

Modern persona are just T rated games and would have gotten a T rating if Mara didn't exist.

It's literally the only reason they got an M.

Nah, it isn't just Mara, ESRB isn't some shadowy organization obfuscating why they gave Persona 5 for example an M-rating

>This is a role-playing game in which players assume the role of a high-school student who enters an alternate world and uses special powers to change the hearts of people in the real world. As players explore themed areas of the “Metaverse,” they engage in turn-based combat against fantastical creatures (e.g., demons, evil spirits, shadow creatures). Characters use blades, pipes, firearms, and Personas (i.e., creatures that enable magical attacks) to defeat enemies; battles are highlighted by light effects, impact sounds, and cries of pain. Some cutscenes depict characters ripping masks off their faces as blood sprays. One cutscene depicts a man shooting another character in the head at close range; blood is shown pooling on the floor and splattering the victim's clothes. Several female monsters/Personas are depicted with exposed breasts, and a handful of creatures have phallic-shaped heads, torsos, or appendages. Various Personas (e.g., Succubus, Incubus) have sexual characteristics that are described in text (e.g., “They visit sleeping men/women and have sexual intercourse with them”); dialogue also includes sexual references (e.g., “Apparently he's been forcing young idols and other girls to have sex with him to move up in the ranks”). Drug smuggling for the mafia is briefly discussed during a side quest (e.g., “Like illegal drugs…? Maybe they made Iida smuggle drugs for them.”). The words “f**k,” “sh*t,” and “a*shole” appear in the dialogue.

It's just Americans being ninnies about boobs and penis while Japan doesn't give a shit as per >>16252237 Japan has it's own separate problems though because while Japan doesn't care about violent acts such as shooting yourself in the head, specific acts such as Beheading are explicit grounds for instant equivalent AO due to IRL murders and serial killings done by teens. They care more about what the specific style of violence is and not about the sex like burgers.

>Nothing about Persona 3 screams "only for adults"

>you summon your Persona through feigning suicide

>Intro cutscene features this without the context of it being for Persona summoning (so it initially appears to just be a girl trying to kill herself)

>The cutscene featuring the delinquent kid turning into a shadow features underage drinking(and I think smoking too? Been a few years)

>Strega use drugs to force their Personas out but these drugs are slowly killing them

>Shinji is killed in a rather dramatic display

>Yukari is brainwashed by the Lovers shadow and tries to fuck you in a love hotel after a steamy shower and appearing in just a towel

>The beach scene as a whole is about horny teenagers trying to get laid

>Your team gets fucking crucified on crosses at one point

>Tartarus is depicted with blood seeping out of the walls and floors in place

>Mara, Succubus, Incubus, etc. all sexual folklore

>The final boss is the manifestation of humanity's collective desire to be dead

Truly, a game for teenagers.

It's a relatively minor detail, but looking back, it baffled me that you could "cripple" the the ant soldiers in Jet Force Gemini, causing them to fall down and twitch and shriek in agony for a few seconds before they despawned. Or alternatively, you could also shoot their heads off.

The game was surprisingly gory for a Rated-T game at any rate. Heads could be blown off, and if you hit an ant soldier (or one of those little koala critters you needed to rescue) with something like a rocket launcher, but better believe you could hear how blood and (non-detailed) chunks splattered in all directions. It's actually surprising enough that both you and the enemy were entirely capable of killing the little buggers.

Also, IIRC Vela had a (very basic) jiggle system for her breasts. Sort of.

Playing this as a younger kid was quite the trip, especially after changing the blood from neon blue to red.

Anybody know Stretch Panic? T-rated game where the first level has you pinching comically distended cartoon breasts until they pop, because reasons. Honestly I think companies actually bothering to try for a certain rating is a AAA/modern soydeveloper phenomenon.

Devs shoot for T because its the ideal rating for maximum sales. It's a balance between interest for adults and nonrestrictive to younger people. It's the same reason big summer blockbusters aim for a PG-13 rating. Before PG-13 existed, summer movies aimed for PG ratings. Aim for the middle of the rating system, and absolutely everyone will see it.

ESRB needs to add a ~16 rating between them. The only clear separate is that M can have bloodshed and topless women (seriously, all Doom GBA needed to do to get a T rating was make monster blood green. The environmental blood was allowed to stay)

d6cb9f  No.16260971

>>16251725

I was interested in this around a year ago. Persona is Typically rated B 12+ in Japan (only 5 is rated C 15+)

The most sense I can make of it is the whole issue with the Japanese language and profanity. Kids' characters can say shit, damn etc, because even though their denotation is the same in Japanese, the connotations around the word are different, they aren't "dirty" in the same way as they are in English.

Another example of a recent game that did this was Ace Attorney 5. No real reason for it be M instead of T, aside from a single speculation about the past they make in the final case. Strangely enough the M-rating makes that speculation somewhat more believable, but still ultimately unconvincing. The M rating/lack of any rating makes games more appealing because it is harder to predict what will happen through knowing what is allowed to happen. This also makes certain games that are still somewhat dark despite their lower rating shine all the brighter.

I suspect AA5 is more due to the blood than anything. Red blood in motion as the clear separate between T and M is well established (and has been for some time). AA1-4 used blood in still images (often black and white) while 5 had visibly dripping blood.

d6cb9f  No.16261036

>>16260985

I don't think the blood by itself was enough since most of the blood isn't even real, the dripping pools show up in clearly abstract cutscenes (look at the intro to case 5) and because there's a scene in Xenoblade where blood can be clearly seen flowing on the main antagonist's claws after just having stabbed a person, and it's only rated T.

d6cb9f  No.16261052

>>16261036

And another example is the Warcraft series' use of blood splatter, yet it also only gets T ratings.

da9fe5  No.16261200

>>16251725

Persona games only have M ratings because of occasional swearing and a mature/sexual themes here and there.

Americans would screech and get triggered if they didn't have M ratings.
