This is a symptom of a larger problem. Consumers have virtually no rights in America, so most of the time a seller can straight-up lie about whatever the fuck they want, and there is nothing you can do about it. They've just been brainwashed into complacency, accepting it because everything that happens in the "greatest country in the world" must, by some inane associative property, also be great. Have you ever wondered why in no other country do they allow markets to lie about the price of products by omitting the tax? They make you carry around a fucking calculator so you can apply the tax (and any applicable recycling fees), just so the seller can more effectively dupe people by having the product end in a .99, in order to figure out what you actually need to pay. And then they wonder why so many Americans are in debt, when everything works this way.
