>Thirteen employees at Valve Corporation were let go recently, including people working in VR.
>Images leaked late last year show what appeared to be a Valve-built VR headset. We heard from sources at the time the plan was to ship the headset early this year, potentially with a Half Life prequel game. We don’t know if those plans are different now after recent employee departures.
>A statement I received from Valve:
>Last month, 13 full time employees were let go and a portion of our contractor agreements were terminated. It’s an unfortunate part of business, but does not represent any major changes at the company. We thank those affected for their contribution and wish them well in future endeavors.
>Departures: A page on Valve’s website lists a portion of its employees. An archived version of the page from the end of January compared with now reveals nine people employed then who are not listed as working at Valve in March. Searches of Twitter and LinkedIn for those names reveal several profiles updated recently to say they no longer work at Valve.
>Other former Valve employees who worked on the Steam Controller and other projects list their work at Valve as ending in 2019. If affected, my DMs are open on Twitter and you can email tips@uploadvr.com with any information. Employees departing companies are often asked to sign mutual non-disparagement agreements. These agreements generally protect both the former employee and the organization. Unfortunately, these agreements often have the side effect of obscuring from public view who made certain decisions and why.
>Valve Corporation Background: For those unfamiliar with Valve, there are only a couple hundred employees at the private company and its chief money-maker is the Steam games store. A patent filed in 2015 outlines Valve’s SteamVR Tracking technology. You just arrange around a room what are essentially positional beacons. These “lighthouses” only need power and are usually mounted in the corner of a room for maximum coverage. Compatible objects in the space like headsets, controllers and accessories can calculate their position just by seeing the lighthouses.
>In 2019, HTC’s next VR headsets (Cosmos and Vive Focus Plus) don’t use SteamVR Tracking. We’ve uncovered hints from Facebook that a follow-on PC-powered Rift S is likely this year featuring the same Insight tracking system as the standalone Oculus Quest. This tracking system might also be capable one day of finger tracking.
>Valve, meanwhile, developed a second generation of its lighthouse-based tracking which can precisely locate objects across multiple rooms, or perhaps even warehouses. That might make SteamVR Tracking 2.0 ideal for certain large-scale VR attractions and arcades. Microsoft ‘s tracking technology, however, was recently adopted by VR attraction company Zero Latency and we were super impressed by Oculus Quest’s arena demonstration by Facebook late last year. Today, Rift is often used with OptiTrack or other external camera-based tracking at venues with VR entertainment.
TL;DR: Valve let go 13 employees, several of whom were working on VR hardware. No reason is currently known, Valves claims it's merely an "unfortunate part of business".

VR hasnt delivered anything successful over 5 years at Valve
i bet they canned a project after seeing how awful the work has been on it and now devs too
day theres AAA quality VR games that are atleast acceptably comparable to usual games that dont require proprietary gadgets (hardware requirements are ridiculous), failed controllers (motion controls) is perhaps its going to get better
if they keep working on failed projects then who gives a shit, people certainly arent going to care unless its good and comfortable to use
you need to create products that people would need and want, not failed projects and waste decades on nothing fruitful
people "dont have data" because they arent developers, only thing that matters to them in the end is the end product

That's the old GM strategy. You fire the lowest 11% of your workforce every year and hire new blood. It serves a few functions:
a) Gets rid of the worst/ineffective employees
b) Instills a sense of urgency in the remaining workforce. If they fuck around or mess up badly, they will be let go.
c) High performing employees have opportunities to advance up the ranks as slots continuously open.
d) Removes people who are stuck in the "Death by cop" mentality. They hate their job but are too depressed / unmotivated to look for another. They are paralyzed by comfort in their spot and consciously don't know it. (this is a thing)
The downsides are, of course, all the real world issues with humans. Nepotism, shifting goalposts, sabotaging others, gaming the system… but this will happen in every social structure run by vanilla humans.

I think this is actually far more pertinent than you may have intended. Seems a lot of silicon valley, west coast hipster faggots had this idea in their heads that the increasingly lower barriers to entry for making games and proliferation of new technology would mean that we would get an explosion of hipster games. That the industry would get all these new "voices" to tell diverse and insightful stories about dumb shit that navel-gazing hipsters love. By opening up Steam to more small-time and truly independent games, they expected more walking sims and quirky, atypical bullshit.
Instead, they learned that there's a ton of retards out there who make asset flips and meme games for a quick buck, and that ease of access to game making tools and resources gives people the opportunity to make what they really want: Porn games.

Honestly, the only hope for VR games comes from the Japanese. They're the only ones autistic enough to make it work from a gameplay standpoint. Western developers can't be bothered to actually make a game let alone anything exclusive that could work in VR. Especially since almost every company that's put out any vr software in the west is rotten with sjws and complained about Oculus and Vive having too many straight white males in the design Department. Sony is really fucking stupid, they should be paying Japanese Developers on the cheap to make fun interesting games for their vr product. they could wrap up the entire Market in less than a decade, unfortunately they're too busy having gay pride parades and worrying about anime titties. Summer lesson actually sold really well and that was just a tech demo. The audience for VR is potentially huge especially in Japan, they just need software desperately.

And you know what the worst part is? Getting to deal with blackpilled faggots who can't enjoy vidcons despite their flaws and always fail to see the bigger picture. We can't have good threads discussing vidya we like without about twenty idiots trying to bring up if someone has at some point said something PC or if there's some right or wrong message in vidya. They're literally no different than those guys who think games are art and that there should be more doivarsity.

Gabe is just trying to separate his company from those fired. The reason why is prob so his company would get better PR for "cutting off the fat" then "we did this because we are losing money" which you can see is kinda working, for the most part since right now people are still just thinking about how "it released a game called rape day on its platform!" which will result in valve changing it's 'allowed' content on steam, yet again. Thus making the company lose even more money because people don't like having their entertainment restricted and they def don't want to suddenly lose access to a game after they bought it cause they found X scene in it.
If things continue at this pace I can see GoG, Epic, Origin, and even Xbox fighting over the gamers that leave their steam once things get bad enough on the platform, It's only a matter of time.

If anyone doesn't know, a week ago a game called Boneworks was announced, developed by a studio called Stress Level Zero. They've made two games tech demos prior, Hover Junkers and Duck Season. Curiously, the game is now packaged in the Valve Master Package, which is a list reserved for Valve's own games.
https://steamdb.info/sub/61/apps/
The devs had another video where they showed off the game with some experimental valve tech like their new knuckle grip controllers. This seems to indicate that Stress Level Zero may be getting bought out by Valve and brought under their wing. They have some interesting ideas to solve the typical problems of VR that they have implemented in the past but the "game" itself still looks like just a tech demo with crowbars and robot headcrabs.
So, if anything, I think Valve is just making room for new devs in their VR push. If HL3 comes, it'll probably be a VR tech demo just as HL2 was a physics tech demo of Source.

Something has definitely been lost over the years when it comes game development.
I'm heard the theory that it's issue of have tech/graphic limitations in the past resulted in dev teams focusing on good gameplay with depth, had now turned into the opposite, focus on good graphics (CINEMATIC!) while the gameplay turns to the same copy pasted generic crap with a new coat of paint (or just becomes a third person shooter)

Valve had a AR headset at one point that could even do VR with an add on, but Valve fired the team led by Jeri Ellsworth (like 5 years ago) and Gabe let them keep the tech legally Valve owned it but let them have it since they were never going to use it, they became the company Digital Illusions and there tech became CastAR which looked impressive but still flopped.

I work at one such place. These are extremely accurate observations that are just as worrying, since only now do I notice that this trend has been recurring throughout my employment experience. It would seem most if not all large corporations in my area are taking to this model, regardless of the sector/type of company. It's almost as if these companies are in turn connected among each other like a larger self-organizing conglomerate…gee who would have thought. Probably nothing to do with parenthesis or anything.
Getting the fuck out of dodge ASAP, will only work for small companies from now onwards.

It's a logical analysis of the 2016 election though. Obviously, the worst case scenario as presented in that post is exactly what happened, but that doesn't make it incorrect.
Given that Ruby Ridge and Waco happened under Bill Clinton; given that Ukraine, Libya and Syria happened under Hillary; given that ISIS was obviously funded by Obama and Hillary through the FSA; one can be forgiven for hoping that Trump might have turned out differently during that election.
The idea that we're worse off under Trump than we would have been under Bernie or Hillary is just laughable.
At best, you can only argue that he is equally as bad as Hillary.
Again, the post in question is 100% logical.

Someone that high up the ladder was probably snatched by competition, regardless of whether or not he had some kind of episode/political conflict. It happens just as described by the pasta: competitors will target key players in rival companies and dangle a better deal in front of them. Hell, competitors are even happy to take the people that get "fired" for political reasons with a better pay/position–the message being that they're more meritocratic/better place to work at than the target company. In practice, the person hired starts flaunting to his/her old "friends" who'll think/gossip that the grass is greener yonder. They'll only do that for people in meaningful leadership positions, though (senior manager and up), since anything they say severely undermines current company leadership.

The dude I am thinking of also left in late 2018 and had said they were not going to release a gaming Vega 7nm card, probably because he was expecting Navi to come back from TSMC with no issues. I think the guy I am thinking of just simply retired? Raja went to Intel no doubt because Intel has announced they want to make dedicated consumer GPUs and they need help getting their existing graphics tech up to speed to compete. Jim Anderson has gone to TSMC so that might have been a more strategic move to get AMD's Zen 2 and Navi rolling out of the fabs smoothly.

I have worked for large companies, small companies, and medium companies. In my experience small companies can be just as bad if not worse if narcissists are in control because there is no buffer and no escape. Medium size companies become a kind of extended high school lunchroom because the narcissists at the top work to atomise and brainwash everyone and then get off on games of “let’s you and him fight”. Large companies affected by this syndrome might have pockets of sanity but if they’ve been under narcissist control for a moderate amount of time then they’ll become kafkaesque hellholes.
I’ve also worked for good examples of all those sized companies. If nothing else I’ve learned to keep my eyes and ears way open and to pay attention to my gut. These parasites really do play by only their own sick little rules.

Its not about the cut. Someone like let's say Ubi is willing to give a cut to valve for the exposure and word of mouth in form of friends list it provides, that's the whole reason. Epic store doesn't give that, at least not in such a capacity as steam. I'm sure epic is directly paying companies to use their store exclusively with fortnite money. REAL TALK
univision is the most infamous example of this, it got tons of funding and (((cash))) because it was going to be the voice of a generation in ~2009. It has completely fallen over because even illegal immigrants don't want to pay $200/mo for cable to be told they are racist. TV today is undergoing the same collapse print newspapers did in the 10s and commercial radio in the 00s. It's going to be a total bloodbath and there will be no survivors since Hollywood's entire distribution model requires TV, radio and print to get their content across. Streaming doesn't fill the gap in the same way a-la-carte storefronts don't.

>Fans Have Spent More Than $3 Billion on Fate/GO Worldwide
Mobile game Fate/Grand Order has pulled in more than $3 billion in microtransactions worldwide.
The game, while free to play, offers in-game currency and occasional increased chances at rolling higher-class Servants for real money. While not every player throws down real cash, the sales aren't insignificant: last month alone, microtransactions totaled $84.3 million worldwide, making Fate/GO the second highest grossing game of the month worldwide.
Unsurprisingly, the majority of the game's total earnings come from close to home — $2.6 billion (approximately 86% of the total) was paid up by Japanese users. Chinese players contributed about $360 million, with US players coming in third at about $90 million, or 3% of the total. Despite the small percentage by comparison, Sensor Tower pointed out that this is a fairly significant amount of revenue, considering the Fate series is not as well known in North American markets as in Asian.

The Japanese have such shit taste. It's funny how they're willing to spend so much on jpegs. It would make more sense if Fate GO was a card game as there would at least be something physical to collect. $90 is still far too much for US players, but I'm curious what the whales are spending. You missed the point, you silly chigger. I said that paying that much money for a physical card game would make more sense, because you're paying for something physical rather than something digital. The point is that it doesn't make sense to pour that much money into something digital that can just disappear into thin air.
>they might spend loadsamoney on jpegs, but there's a reason for it.
It's not a good one and never has been. They may have made such a stink about it, but they still poured a fuckload more money into than other larger countries. The Asian mentality in general is too spend money on stupid shit that they can brag about. It's a society of bugmen that globalists can milk.
