The last thing I want to see in video games is the same 10 or so ugly mugs of self important jackoffs "starring" in every game, just like I get to hear the same 10 or so self important jackoffs voice act in a lot of games. It can be done well and it has worked quite well for a long time now, fucking SNES had characters based on people IIRC.
It doesn't necessarily kill creativity, it just gives you a base which you can work over, like the guy from FC3 or payne in butt.
What fucks it all is bad devs and current year mentality. Bad devs think literally copypasting something into another medium is creating, and current year mentality wants "realism" as in fat chicks with man jaw "realism".
I mean, just look at all those girls, based on jaw alone they could all be man, except maybe the first one with her disgusting gum smile. And even then, I'd say that some of the characters look even worse than the 3D they're based on.

Yakuza games do it right. The actors fit the setting and it's never a entirely faithful depiction, they almost always get fitter bodies and some details like skin tone are changed to be more fitting.
Meanwhile, Capcom is the opposite, they want the characters to look exactly like the models so you get Trish with tits that look like a spaniel's ears and, on top of that, either the engine they're using or the staff are morons and we end up with shit like La Goblina Residente 2. Also, in DMC5's case, they hired a rat and two manjaws so whoever did the casting should not have their job.

It sucks and is stupid for one simple reason. You can use face capture for faces that are not scanned in. The choice to have the models have the same face as the actors is one made for the sake of being cheap. And I'm sure another facet to this bullshit is vidya companies trying to "legitimize the art" form by using real actors' likeness. Just another step towards Hollywood 2.0 if you ask me. Not to mention the cost will add up over time. Vidya actors used to be cheaper than (((hollywood))) actors because there wasn't any "brand" or likeness fees associated with it. But if things continue down this path, yeah, it's gonna get expensive and we're going to be forced to go back to the old days of voice acting. Where the voices were just people in the studio who were the least shit at acting.
