If you're accepting GBC games too, my vote goes to Ghost Babel. No prior knowledge of the series is needed; it is basically a 2D Metal Gear like the originals, but it came after Metal Gear Solid and incorporates elements of MGS's gameplay. Graphically, I think it looks alright too.

The remake was good too, but the music wasn't quite as good as the original, and the sheer amount of Bros. Moves you have to juggle around is still a pain in the dick, even with a touchscreen. They also made it a lot easier in general (you can hold the hammer out for as long as you want instead of having a half-second window, final boss lets you attack/heal up first, ruining the whole initial challenge of the fight)

No. The best way by far I've found to play GBA games is on Switch through RetroArch. Fixes the GBA's inherent shit audio quality and the scaling and filters makes it clean up real nice. Played through Advance Wars this way. For playing real carts, an AGS-101 modded original GBA, a Micro, or a phat DS are the only good options I know of.

Shit, I wish I knew about the games listed in this thread when I had my GBA. I was a retarded kid and knew nothing. All I got were shitty GBA versions of console games like Ready 2 Rumble boxing and Prince of Persia (sands of time?), didn't like them, and gave up on GBA. The only issue I had with SoM is that there are a few things you can't find like weapons or spirits without going looking for guides because they're obsucre as shit, also iirc there was a gamebreaking bug that wouldn't let you go over the desert part.
On-topic game thing, Rebelstar Tactical Command is pretty good, it's like old Xcom but without the eye rape.

circle of the moon is a really unique hybrid of the old and new castlevania games and it's a good and challenging game. it's pretty cool that they tried infusing old nes gameplay into the sotn system. by the end the movement is really cool since you fly around with infinite jumps. i recommend this game but it kind of suffers from being a gba game in that the graphics and gameplay are a little bit of a downgrade from sotn. if you had to pick one gba castlevania game aria of sorrow is the actual best castlevania game and is a true sequel to sotn with no downgrade feeling, but circle of the moon is also really good as its own thing.
stay away from harmony of dissonance:

>extremely repetitive, the whole game is based on pallet swaps
>the gameplay is complete gameboy crap, it's floaty and shitty compared to cotm and aos

Astro Boy (hard mode), Ninja Five-o, Dragon Ball Adventure (hard mode) are a must, all very good and pretty damn hard. If you can beat Astro Boy on hard, without dying, you're an elite superior gamer.
I'd also recommend Alien Hominid and Gunstar Super Heroes.
Advanced Double Dragon is super hard, but it's not an original game it's a port.
