I actually like how Diablo 3 lets you respec freely whenever you want and allows you to experiment with whatever bizarre build ideas you want to. I wish more games implemented skills like it

You can respect in diablo II, but i think you have to do some shit first to be able to have that privilege.

respec is a reward from one of the quests in the game, from Akara. one of the very first ones in fact, in the amazon encampment.

but you can only do it as many times as you can complete that quest. so each character has a maximum of 3 respecs since you can do all quests 3 times, once in each difficulty mode. you cannot respec a character endlessly.

Play MedianXL for Diablo 2 instead, it's much better than the base game. It can actually compete with stuff like Grim Dawn and PoE if you overlook the graphics.

All skills are useful, more skills, more items, more space, item crafting (almost no RNG, but expensive), slightly higher resolution with adjusted AI. There's just no reason to play vanilla, this mod is objectively better. Multiplayer probably has more players too and is free.

yes you can, each act boss can drop essences that when cubed give you a respec token.

Nah, those are shit because they don't even self-synergize, and rely on stacking -res% to even be effective later, or else having way too much energy/factor, at which point any other later spell is going to be trump it absolutely

I was going to argue that those skills have niches that others in the tree don't but the only class that's actually true for is Sorc. So I guess you're right.

If you can't afford to put points in energy, your character isn't a spellcaster that the spell is designed for. Some classes received proper spellcaster capabilities and this is the trade-off.

Post some examples? I'm struggling to find any bad low level skills here that would require re-spec. I've played necromancer, druid and sorceress and they all had really good low level skills.

As a melee necro I used embalming and carnage, lvl1 skills. I know all summoners use skeletal flayers, lvl1 skill.

As a shapeshifter, lvl 1 and 6 skills were straight up the core of the build.

Sorceress has the most low level spells that are useful for most builds: living flame, thunderstone, frigid sphere, shatter the flesh, immersion, familiar. That's more good skills at low levels than the total amount of good skills in the base game.

It's a shitty little gold vacuum pet like the rest.

I played the HD mod two summers ago and beat the hardest difficulty with all classes. Start with the Necromancer and collect loot for the other classes using drop increasing equip and drop in the shared loot chest. Side note, after playing I understood the cut content being cut as the story is somehow less ambient and spooky with it in.

Is there any mod that improves the vanilla game's UI and QoL by adding stuff like better spell hotkeys and a stash but doesn't switch around any other content in the base game?

I've been playing Belzebub/Tchernobog for a bit, but Belzebub adds a lot of new content in and also changes all the boss fights from how they originally appear in the game (The Butcher is buffed, for example). Tchernobog is missing all the singleplayer quests, so obviously not ideal for singleplayer. There's nothing wrong with Belzebub necessarily, I'm just looking for a more vanilla experience but with Diablo II's improved UI. If there isn't such a thing I'll just git gud and play Belzebub.
